Well try this story on for size....

My grandmother was the cook at my elementary school.......this would've been in the early 50s. I used to leave home at 5 a.m. when I was in the first grade, so that I could walk with her to school. She'd bring her kindling with her so that she could start up the cook stove. This is why I remember commodities so well, because that was pretty much all they had to cook for school lunches back then.

Pinto beans, rice, powdered milk (yuk), those 20 lb cans of peanut butter, yellow corn meal, the ginormous cans of hominy and those wonderful two pound blocks of unsliced cheese. I remember them trying different recipes back then to try and diversify the flavors a little. It didn't work out very well until they discovered.........ready for this..........cheese fudge!!
