Mr Basketball (2012-2013)

Fatt Jones Wrote:I think one of the coolest things about this award is that a player can get hot in the Sweet Sixteen and lo and behold he's Mr. Basketball. So many times that's when it's all decided. There is so much parity in so many regions that alot of really good players may not get to the Big Dance. MVP2 I have not seen Montgomery Co. play this season. How good is the Prewitt kid and by a deep run do you mean they have a legit shot to win it all?I do think that Willis and Hawkins are the two best players that I've seen.

I think that's a very UNFORTUNATE circumstance. Love the Sweet 16,
and can imagine the thrill it would be to have a dominating performance in
it. That being said, I don't like the idea of anyone basing they're
vote on that performance. It's entirely possible that a good,
not great player can have a big performance over a short 4 day period,
and it's even more possible for a truly great player to be on a
team that doesn't even make it there.

The only way I would let that decide it for me is if I were undecided
between 2 players that made it to the Sweet 16 and let their
performances there break the tie for me. It's like baseball MVP
or Cy Young, the voting is done before the psot season to
avoid the very issue.

So tell me how many truly great players from the state of Ky. have not been named Mr. Basketball? Should the championship event in any respective sport not be taken into consideration. It would be ludicrous to award a player based solely on his Sweet Sixteen performance, but many years there is not a clear cut favorite, allowing a player to win it late.

Hawkins would get my vote.

The kids dunk against Trinity was nasty. Most athletic player ive watched all year.

I heard it was^ and that WKYT sent the video to Espn. Anyone got a video of it?

As to one of your questions, MOST sports decide their individual
awards without letting post season affect them. The exceptions
are the few who do. So yes I'd say NO sport should vote on
awards for individuals based on performance in the championship.
It doesn't make sense in team sports.

And no, truly great players don't get overlooked, no matter whether
their teams get there or not. But most years we don't have
such a clearly great player, who's a no brainer. Most years
there's a few[lots] of really good players, and it just seems
unfair to wait and let a big Sweet 16 decide some votes,
when players just as good(even a little better) don't make it
because their teams weren't good enough. Afterall the award
is supposed to go to the state's best player, not the state's
best player that made it to Rupp.

I think having it after the Sweet 16 helps narrow down an even field, like this year. There are 5-7 guys with a shot at Mr. Basketball, some of them are teammates with others (Troutman and Willis, Hicks and Quick).

I thought the year Hickey won it was a great example. There was no favorite going into the Sweet 16 that year
