Next coach at Sheldon Clark
#61
It doesn't matter who they get somebody is gonna be upset with him.. everybody yelled for roger harless then when we got him..nobody liked him ..the people of martin co will never be happy with the coach at sheldon clark idc if u had billy D or Rick they would still find something wrong. because everybody wants their 'babies' to be basketball stars and yea thats cute in elem. school but high school ball you play to win...soo good luck to the next coach at SC..im backin 100%.. GO CARDS!

I believe that ought to just let shawn hager coach the team. he seems to be calling the shots around school anyway, he wants to bring in a coach that will last a couple of years and by then he will have quit football and then he can just take over the basketball program. thats the political plan, so why wait just let him coach both.

Kevin Spurlock, the embattled coach at Clay Co interviewed yesterday. People are lining up in the streets offering to help him move.

That would be the fastest move out of a county in the history of Kentucky basketball coaches! Bobby Keith may even break a sweat helping out. :lmao:

Wonder if Parks or Marcum would be let take over at Clay if that happen?

Why does Clay County want Spurlock out?
#66
Who said they did? Unless you want to take the two idiots words that spoke above who really don't seem to have that big a following. Give their Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Coaches, Boosters Club officers, and main players a call and see what they say. I believe you will see that no one that matters wants him gone. If so, he would have been gone. He seems to be a good guy from what I saw at Hazard and Clay County. He has a great family that gets involved in the community and is well respected by those they are affiliated with. They are an asset to any community they have been in. You may find disgruntled parents or monday morning "quarterbacks" that question his coaching decisions but why get on here and bash a guy that just seems to take his job serious, works hard, and cares about who/where he is involved with. He was most likely an ACL away from the state tournament this year and he puts together some outstanding schedules. I say, wherever he is, good luck and keep up the good work. I am sure my comments will get negatively responded too by the above-mentioned co-horts but I have said all I need and want to say. For what it is worth.

From what I have heard that Spurlock interviewed and was not offered the job. He seems to a quality person and coach but in Martin County its doesn't matter if Coach Cal was brought in to coach they would still find something to b---- about. its just a way of life :flame:

i agree down and out, but the newspaper in our county use to be so supportive of one JR Hammond who's winning percentage at sheldon clark high school in 6 years, well lets face was not very good. How about 35% and that would be pushing it.y I never understand that we say we want a winning coach but do we really want that or do we want someone that will play there kid. So I agree people are going to complain no matter who they bring in. Some people say we should hire someone out of the county, like we did before, (Sam Sparks, good coach to) Evans (well not so much) and how did they work out. The parents will run them out of town as fast as there babies dont play. Because everybody kid is a superstar. Somebody will be mad. Sam Sparks coached how many years here. 1 or 2 at the most. This isnt a dream job.

Wrong again Down and Out. Spurlock was offered the job, I know for a FACT! And you are right whoever is hired will have to put up with a lot of crap and I'm sure you will be the ring leader! Who in their right mind would want this job? And why people are so concerned about your opinion is beyond me. For heaven's sake, You thought JR Hammond was a good coach. I think its funny that the selection committee has limited knowledge about basketball. I mean if I wanted to know about football I'd ask a football coach and if I wanted to know about the band I'd ask the principal. This is why we will end up with somebody nobody wants and maybe thats what they're looking for. I think the next guy will be a short termer and the next guy will be Shawn Hager with his vast knowledge of basketball!

I agree cheer. The next coach wont last more than 2 years, 3 at the most. Then they can hire sean hager. Hager hasnt been around basketball in 20 years, well the game hasnt changed that much since then (yeah right). Also from what i hear, the baseball team isnt doing to hot either, maybe he can coach baseball to, and why not golf, does he play golf, well he could probally coach it. Then they could just call him the coach, the only true coach at the school. As far as JR goes, i like JR, but i would want him to coach an elementary team. He put the school through 6 years of torture, and dont even try to say he played the best players down and out. bc u know his point guard for a couple years with his dad on the bench, (u know who im talking about) wasnt in no way the best player on the team. When u strugle to make a lay up let alone run the team. Also he started his 5'9 nephew at center. So i guess is it whoever u like is all that really matters, not who is the best for the job.

I am a new member and it seems everybody knows this person or that person has been offered the vacant job. Unless you are on the search committee how do you know and if that is true who do you feel should have the job. Let the people making the decision make it but from what it seems like the person you wanted has not be considered.
#73
Bottom line is this. Spurlock is a good person who basically just can't coach a lick. He employs the worst offensive sets and system known in high school basketball.
Trust me people when I say the people are very happy that he may be leaving. He wasn't going to be rehired after next year anyway because his contract runs out.
When Clay Co gets 200 people to show up to home games, when the program has to raise it's own money for the first time ever, when you have over 30 kids quit your program including 5-8 starters over 4 years of which 2 of those were offered bb scollys even though they didn't play JR or Sr years, when all of this and more happens it's time for a change.
Trust me, Spurlock will have plenty of help moving and that includes the Super, the principal and the legend.

Have heard Justin Amburgey has been to S.C. 3 times for talks, interviews, etc. usually asking someone to come back 2 or 3 times is a sign of wanting someone, but you never know what the committee is thinking. Hopefully they will let everyone know soon.

Who did this search committee consist of by the way? Kevin SHurlock has been named the new coach at sheldon clark. Last night in clay county there were over 200 people at his house offering to help him move. Our so called committe who from what i have heard consists of Principal Rob Fletcher and Football coach/legend Sean Hager and Newspaper man, basketball genious Ronnie Hickman have hired a coach who has been run out of hazard for al hollend. dont know SHurlock but big Al is a **** of a coach. And well clay county told him not to let the door hit him you know where on the way out. My personal opinion they should have offered the job to Bill Mike Runyions, but he might yell at our kids and we wouldnt want that now would we. The bottom line is Roger Harless should be the coach, these our his kids that he built. If he was going to be fired it should have been last year when they didnt win, this year they won and then he was fired bc, well you know. If Moore wants a chance to go to college somewhere good he should leave. Its a sad day when a player like him has to have coaches and a county like this.

I am reading a lot about hiring committee, but the truth is that the site-base council is supposed to interview and make a recommendation to the principal who does the hiring. The committee, as good-hearted as they may be, is really irrelevant in this case. Principal makes the decision and the super must approve. Regardless of who it is, the track record there is enough to scare off many quality candidates. on the flip side, BJ Moore is one of the best players in the region. This should be interesting.

Must be women because all the male population is in jail. Oh, they may be on work release. The old super and Cletus can help him move in their striped suits and ball and chains.

I'm new on this site but from reading some of the posts Cheer Crazy doesn't like the football coach too much but I guess that leads me to ask what does a cheerleading coach know about selecting a basketball coach?
#81
Heard this morning it was going to be Spurlock.
#82
Heard Spurlock too. No offense to Sheldon Clark but it has to raise suspicion why a coach would leave a program like Clay Co. to go to Sheldon Clark? Not that its a bad job its just not Clay.
#83
It raises suspicion too because this is a program with no stability. I mean stability in the head coaching position. Sam Sparks turns the program around, was named 15th Region Coach of the Year... What did he get? A pink slip. If the coach does not follow the superintendent, then it is evident with Harless and Hammonds' departure, you are shown the door. Spurlock is a good coach and if he goes to SC, it will be another good coach in a bad situation. The sad part about this is the kids who have to deal with this uncertainty year in and year out.
#84
I was told today that he will be meeting with the SC players on Monday... If true I would like to welcome him to Martin County.
#85
Get out your welcome mat Cardinal Alum because a press conference is set for Monday at Miss Ida's at 11 o'clock. He met with the players Friday and signed his contract so its now official Kevin Spurlock is the new SCHS boys basketball coach. Great choice by the committee:Thumbs::Thumbs::Thumbs::Thumbs::Thumbs::Thumbs:

Looks like im going to be driving down there before work on Monday. Im glad they went out of the county and hired someone, Lets hope this hire works out and he is here for awhile.
#87
This was not their first choice! They struck out on a few local names first and then decided to go in this direction. Congrat's on a great hire!
#88
The primary reason for this hire, and I cannot blame them, is because he has a daughter who is an up and coming girls basketball player and she is going to be great. This may put the underachieving girls team from last year over the hump and into the Sweet Sixteen.
#89
There was no local people considered by the committee. Only Spurlock, Clay Campbell and Justin Amburgey were interviewed and that is a fact.
#90
Probably a good hire.
