Harlan County 2010

HAT51 Wrote:Jenkins is a fine QB and will have his chances as a freshman. Freshman must have a great attitude and not get too anxious. The 3 that started in 09 had to prove themselves several times over.

Jenkins will be a good Highschool QB, but Coach Larkey likes knowledge as much or more then talent at the QB position. He traditionally doesn't like to start Freshmen, but like he said last year you have to play with the hand you're dealt! But I do know he really likes having an experienced QB and the Brewer kid has worked his butt off and he will be better then what people expect. And Maggard isn't a scrub at all, but he turned into a pretty nice reciever so he may be needed more at that position. The competition will only make each one of them better. Who knows though if Jenkins comes in with the right attitude and lights it up he may get his chance!

:thatsfunnI can smell Larkey's 9th regional championship game and 5th regional title this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt, Jenkins is an athlete and has great QB skills and Larkey will give him his opportunity to show. The young man is making a huge step up. Will he step right in??? The move from 7th-8th to High School Football is a big one and may take some time to adjust and get familiar with this intensity. I think some JV and Freshman play will settle him in for a great future, but you never know. I guess we will just have to see. One additional, although normal hurdle, is that he is playing baseball after just finishing basketball and won't be in football mode until June-July. He is an exceptional baseball potential and will have a great future there as well. There is a great class of 8th graders on the way that could provide play for the Black Bears this upcoming year, but as we all know it requires a LOT of hard work to equip themselves to be able to produce right away on this level. There are several that could contribute. Right now is the time to equip. I am excited knowing what the future holds for the Black Bears. GO BLACK BEARS!!!!!!!

Brewer has demonstrated sufficient skill, both running and throwing, but he also appears to have some leadership qualities and poise that give him a chance to really help the Bears. No one will outwork Maggard but as another post suggested, he is too good to be taking back-up QB reps during spring and summer practice, so I look for Brewer to start at QB, Maggard at another position, and Jenkins groomed to take over after Brewer leaves.
#35
Maggard made 7 catches in a playoff game last year. He will be more than fine if he doesn't play QB. He is a nice wide rec, but he is very good defensively. Those are some big 8th graders who have been coming in and out of the weightroom. The best thing is there are more to come when the kids from C'land and Evarts are not playing baseball.

That's the best bet of what will happen. Brewer has worked as hard as any kid I have ever seen a being a QB and he will have his chance this year, especially since the Logan Johnson rumors have died down!

Ok...I'll bite. What Logan Johnson rumors?
#38
Nothing but Rumors!

Good luck

People likes to put things on here what they don't know. Harlan will be a great team, and it will be a good season.

The Bears just competed in the Powerhouse Classic Laurel County Weight Meet this past Saturday and came in second in the team competition. There were about 10 teams there with probably around 300 boys competing I would estimate. We had several boys place individually also. This is from what I can remember and may not be correct on all places, so please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Jordan Calton got first place in his weight division and also broke the school record for his power clean with a 275 pound max lift. Brian Owens got third place in his div. Tucker Lewis got first in his. Alex Haywood got third place in his. Dylan Smith got first place in his. Cody Taylor got second in his. Devan Burgan placed in his weight div., but I can't remember what place. Corey chorak came in first for the middle school lifters.

Way to go Black Bears - We are very proud of our boys!!!!

Very nice results! I see that inclement weather aside a few dedicated bears are making it. Keep up the hard work gents!!

Points were awarded for the top 5 positions. Only the top three in each class received an award. Other black bears earning points for the team by placing in their weight classes were Jordy Brewer, Kainer Caudill, and Michael Smith. There were at least three others who were 6th finishing just outside the points. HC had 27 lifters. Montgomery County had around 50 but had some quality numbers winning the over all title. East Jessamine had some nice lifters also (around 50) to take the third place trophy. A few kids who won classes were seniors. HC took no seniors. All those kids who lifted plus many who could not be there because of the early morning snow or lack of transport will all be back for the season next year. Dylon Smith had not power cleaned in roughly a year or more and got 225 lbs. Very close to getting 250. Sure would be nice to see him play the whole season next year.

I predict that Coach Tom Larkey will have a great season!
#45
Way to go out on a limb, LWC...seriously, has Larkey ever had a bad season? He seems to be one of those coaches that always gets the maximum from his talent. He now has the foundation in place, and I look for HC to be 8 wins and up every year as long as he's there.

I have the feeling that this bunch of Black Bears are fired up. Heard they will be sort of young again next year in several positions and have an outstanding group of 8th graders coming in and some of them may play.
#47
You are right HAT51, the Bears are fired up and we do have some young ones that could play if they get to work and have the right attitude. There are some big linemen and skill players coming in from the 8th grade. The Harlan County Black Bears are fortunate to have Coach Tom Larkey and he and staff have meshed together to produce and these young men are on board. The Black Bears entered 5A last year with a bang and I think there will be some thunderous bangs in the near future provided by the HC Black Bears. The Black Bears are building something special and it will be exciting. GO BLACK BEARS!!!!!!!!!!
#48
The future is bright for the Black Bears for sure, but let's not forget that we have some experienced upper classmen that are ready to play some football NOW! These guys will lead by example and the younger one's will fall right in line. 2010 will be an exciting season for the Black Bear Nation!!!!

Our girl's basketball team is playing in the regional championship tonight. If they win, then Spring practice will be on hold. If not, I would think that, weather permitting, they will be ready to go on Monday.

Since football season ended, they have been lifting weights and running. I'm sure they'll enjoy getting to put on some pads and knock heads.

They'll have a good number of Freshmen out for next season and they are a talented group. Some of those may be able to earn some PT on varsity. They were relatively young last season and have most of their starters returning. There were some who got valuable experience in the JV/Freshmen games last season and should be ready to step in on varsity this season.

The off season committment will pay off.

Knowing the Larkey family personally, you have to understand what a great season is to HIM. I believe they will have one of those.
#52
Ok...going by LWC's inside knowledge and Mama Bear's assessment of returning players, though admitting I haven't seen the schedule, I will say the Bears run the table with the exception of Bell Co (can't quite pick them in that one based on the reports of Bell having a state title in store). That puts them at 9-1 and district champs in the regular season.

This is last year's results. Next season's schedule should be pretty close to this one. I'm not positive about one of them.

Now that basketball season has ended, we have a couple extras in the weight room. The Bears will most likely be having spring football practice in the very near future. I've heard that the Black Bears are working very hard and getting stronger every day. I've heard that the agility training is getting some good results as well. I've also heard that the agility/speed/cardio work will intensify each month leading up to Camp Week. Faster and stronger fast Black Bears...wow. Marcus McMillian is coming out of basketball and if he gets committed in the weightroom and with the agility work, he will be a load to bring down and thats if you can catch him. Chase Calton and Coty Miracle, also coming out of basketall, have great potential to become beasts this coming season. They are both very physical. Also, a stronger Aaron Caldwell will be an asset as well. It is great to see these young men transition straight to the weight room and football agility work. It shows their commitment. I think all of these young men will play roles in the Black Bears success this fall. Again, I will mention that there are a few 8th graders that could play roles this fall as well, we will just have to see. Alot of Black Bears are at work and the excitement builds. Coach Tom Larkey and Staff are class acts. GO BLACK BEARS!!!!!
#56
I hear the Bears are looking pretty good in spring practice...anybody have any specific reports they would like to share???
#57
i know coach Larkey will work them hard and get the most out his team.
#58
Anxious to hear details if anyone has any.
#59
I'm sure the Coaching staff is fine tuning some, lighting a fire under others, and evaluating a fews potential. Not all are out there, as some play other sports during this time, but, the opportunity to have a few spring days in pads must be taken advantage of. The coaching staff learns alot and also gains some things to ponder on between now and August. Those who have been working hard get to see how its paying off and a taste of progress. Keep working Black Bears!!!!
#60
One good thing about spring practice is that the coaches can evaluate the players on how they can block and tackle. These are the two fundamentals they must have and this will be the last time they can show this until late in the summer.
