College Players from Your High School
#31
This isn't many as Letcher Central has only had four graduating classes.

Matt Chandler - Kentucky Christian
Caleb Frazier - UVA Wise
Chase Knight - UVA Wise
Charlie Banks - EKU

As far as pre-consolidation, I couldn't begin to name all the players from Whitesburg and Fleming-Neon who played college ball as both teams played football from its inception in Kentucky in the twenties or thirties thru 2004

I'll stick with Division 1 college players from just the past few seasons.

Boyle County has had:

1. Jacob Tamme - UK - Currently plays TE for the Indianapolis Colts
2. Travis Leffew - UofL - Has played for the Bears, Packers, Cowboys, Falcons, Chiefs, and Browns
3. Bobby Leffew - UofL - Worked out for several NFL teams and played arena football fro several teams including the Lexington Horsemen.
4. Tyler Begley - UK's kicker a couple of years ago
5. Brody Overstreet - Wake Forest - injured his sophomore year
6. Justin Smith - WKU's current QB
7. Neal Brown - UK (2 seasons) and UMass (2 seasons) - Currently the Offensive Coordinator for Troy University
8. Seth Tamme - currently a SE for WKU

I'm sure I am missing someone but that's it off the top of my head. There have been dozens of small college players.

Rockcastle County:
Burley Burkhart- Union College(I think)- Broke several records
Josh Hale-Georgetown
Andy Hale-Georgetown
Derrick Bussell-EKU can't remember if he went for baseball or football
Devon Mason- LWC (First recruiting class in almost 70 years for LWC)
*I think that Mikey Denny and Matthew Burkhart went to Union but don't hold me to it*

Jason Leger (Former starter at offensive line. Graduated with the Andre Woodson class)
Brad Durham (Junior. Currently second string RT, but has started a few games.)

I have edited this post, now that I realized it is COLLEGE not just D1.

Someone smarter than I can edit this list and add more names

Nathan Leslie- Marshall University
Jeremy Caudill- University of Kentucky- 4 year starter
Nick Jamerson- Pikeville College
Hank Mullins- Pikeville College
Seth Hyden- Eastern University
Wesley Woods- Eastern University

Those are just a few that come to mind...I'm a young gun you might say
Just a couple of others of note:

Kevin Younce- Cumberland College
Chris Spriggs- Cumberland College (I believe)
Trevor Compton- Cumberland College (I Believe)
John Ortega- Centre (3 sport star)

Seems like Matt Slone also received a scholarship at Cumberland.

Chris Jervis went on to play at Morehead State. If I'm not badly mistaken, his brother Kevin also may have played a year at Morehead.

Also, I'm wanting to say Adam VanHoose went on to play college ball somewhere.

I know there are more from my time in high school (1999-2003) that played college ball somewhere locally.

That is just off my head right now and there is more. Funny thing is every one of those guys other than maybe 3 or 4 were from 1990 on. I don't think there have been more kids go to college and play ball over that span that what Lawrence County produced. That's leaving out a lot of great players that went on to play even D1 baseball or coach instead.
There is ZERO doubt any one school has put out more coaches over that span. NFL, College + High School. It's amazing what has come out of a little population of 2,000! Great run + better days are coming!
Very impressive. Fred Dean was getting some college attention, but couldn't get the grades. I believe he went the semi pro route. How about Michael Copley? Didn't he play for Marshall?

Younce and Compton never made it through camp at Cumberland. Chris Spriggs went to the Navy out of highschool. Slone may have had an offer but he never stepped foot on Cumberlands campus.

JT Britt- Georgetown, redshirted last year is a RS fr. this year.
Jake Bolander- KCU, is a freshman this year
DJ Jordan- KCU, i believe starts CB at KCU and is a Jr. or RS So.
Chad Dyer- KCU, flunked out of school i believe
Anthony Boyer- KCU, quit the football team i think
Chris Lyons- KCU, no longer going to school there, i think

These are athletes from Lewis County that went to college to play football, and don't forget Corky Prater who played QB for the Lions and EKU and was in fact also a catcher on the Colonels baseball team in the 70s.
