Hes never even got to see his soon play football besides on tapes and now his son might even move to play under him. As sad as it makes me with me being a senior next year im sure this makes his life alot easier and better getting to finally watch his son play some ball so GOOD LUCK COACH!!
Gretna is 1A (Div. 2)...enrollment around 660-670.

I would say in this area, Hampton would be the best qualified for the position, but I'm sure there are others out there just as qualified, but they may not bring the passion for the game and the community that Hampton would bring. Hampton would also bring the support of the community that Saunders failed to get.

We saw what happened when the players chose the last coach at Pikeville. Everyone thought it was a good idea because the players wanted it. Let the people in charge make the decision that is best for the program and not a certain group of teenagers.
05-26-2009, 02:35 AM
Valley should go outside for the hire. Nothing against Hampton and Branham but Saunders got the program rolling and anyone he recommends should be looked at. Like Saunders personality or not the guy can flat out coach and knows football better than anyone Valley has ever had. Good Luck in your new Job Coach Saunders.
05-26-2009, 02:44 AM
In my honest view, they should hire someone not from this community. With the facilities Valley has seems like they should not have a problem finding a coach. They hired Saunders and he wasn't from around here and he has done a fine job.
05-26-2009, 05:37 AM
OK Saunders came, succeeded and left for a more successful endeavor. It is time he is no longer part of the equation. Those who want the position need to offer up their credentials and stop trying to minimize someone elses credentials to make themselves look better. I agree that someone from the outside should be hired and there is no doubt the boys or parents won't have a say because it is not round ball. So- how about those watching the posts that are interested in the position post your credentials and show us what you have to offer. What is your actual football playing experience? How many successful seasons have you coached? What do you have to offer others haven't? Put all of that on here for folks to decided themselves...if you can sell yourself to strangers you may be what it takes to ensure success for this team.

I never called you anything. I am just stating what I have seen with my own eyes. I hope they hire someone soon. It wouldn't be right to let Mike Roberts continue to work at it all summer and then hire someone else. I have heard a lot of different names being thrown around. Good luck to SV football. I thought that they were on the way to turn the program around. It can happen, but its going to take some hard work.

I agree with Hootie. Go ahead and get a coach in place. Players need to be patient. If they love football then they will play for any coach. If players say "I will quit or transfer" then they apparently do not love the game. I do know one thing and that is football can be a big sport at SV but it has to continue and build upon recent success. Good luck SV and look forward to the future.

Wildcat FB Parent Wrote::argue: IMO Coach Saunders is leaving because he was sick and tired of the constant battle to get the support he needed for the program from administration. He struggled for some time to try and get adequate coaching staff. Sometimes I wonder if all of this wasn't the fear that the growing popularity and success of the football team was a threat to the bball reputation and everyone knows the worship of the round ball at valley. He is obviously an outstanding coach with high honors to have been chosen for a team with the winning stats of Gretna. It is a very sad situation that he did not get the support he wanted and deserved at Valley because he has really developed some outstanding athletes there and could have coached several of those boys into State Championships their Junior and Senior years. Hopefully, the SBDM council and FD Johnson will show some respect for the boys and their dedication to the program and hire someone that they can respect and perform for. Not someone who has turned their back on the boys or someone because of their political pull. As far as Saunders- the majority will miss him and those who don't should know that he is the one who has won this battle as he has moved back to the state where he began his career and for once he is inheriting a winning team not developing a team from the ground up. If I were him I would have one last thing to say to the naysayers...:moon:
This is the best thing i have read in this thread.

From what i have gained its 4 ppl that are really pushing for the job, 1) Hampton. 2) Branham. 3) Roberts. 4) Ratliff.
In my mind the players would want to play for 2 of them people listed that is #'s 1 and 3.
Saunders was the best thing that has ever happen to valley and WILL be the best thing that has ever happen to valley, they let the best person slip but ah they will see what they lost next year when you have a team that could go 8-2, 9-1 or even 10-0 to a 5-5 team again or even a 4-6.

it wouldnt matter if jon gruden tryed to get it.
its all about polotics......
imagine how good they'd be if they still had hillard howard......wow
saunders was only making them great he was very involved with the grade school team unlike most high school coaches
the 7th and 8th grade team was 3 in the county and the 5th and 6th grade would have won if they hadnt had to play belfry 5 times in which they won 4, and the championship hadnt have been at belfry. and the 3rd and 4th team was unreal for that age group if im not mistaken they won every game. they all ran the same offense as the high school. your program is not only 9th through 12th grades it all stars at a young age
repititions and experiance along with heart and A LITTLE skill is what makes a team.
i just hope whoever they get stays involved with thge younger kids as did saunders so they can DEVELOPE into a great team. I also hope the next coach has the same offense so when my brother who is going to be in the eighth grade has a high school team he can be proud of instead of looking back and wondering what if.....

Howard was given free reign at SV but was never involved with the younger kids. He left when he saw there was a great deal of work to do.

are you out of your mind hillard howard is awesome he was only there 1 year and he seen what saunders seen and he got out, shelby valley is a basketball school and thats all it will ever be as long as the powers that be have anything to say about it not that that is a problem were one of the best in the state in basketball but we could have both...

I agree that coaching experience in this situation is a must. The person best have thick skin also and eyes in the back of his head.

I agree with wildcat FB parent that coaching experience is a must in this particular position. I might add that the applicant should have thick skin and eyes in the back of his head.

:CE_DP_Ste That is right on target. The team seems to be fine right now. The position is posted and FD Johnson says they hope to appoint someone in a couple weeks. The boys appeared to have had a good work out today and are looking forward to 7 on 7. Thanks Coach Roberts and Jim for your support.

hampton&bobby b did nothing to help saunders to grow this team they wanted him to fail so they could get his job. roberts has done more for the team in this short time than they did all year. neither should be head coach of anything at valley we need winners to lead this team. any one that tells player pick me or dont play wants the kids to leave or not play now thats a good role player seems they are out for themsleves. roberts is the man or mark p saunder man :devilflam

Apparently you are in the middle of a bad situation at valley. This is why I say bring in someone new that won't put players in such a devisive atmosphere. They can just play football.
05-27-2009, 01:24 AM
I agree with what someone said earlier that the players should not be the ones to choose the coach. HOWEVER, they should have input or at least should be listened to. I hope the players have voiced their opinion to Connie Compton and FD Johnson. These boys are the only ones who know who can truly benefit their program and who can help them to strengthen their program.
I think it speaks highly of Coach Roberts to tell the boys he is there for them for the long haul and they need to focus on conditioning and their winning season.

Can anyone tell me ? Where did Roberts coach and when. I also thought he owned a business and not an employee of the school system.....
05-27-2009, 01:32 AM
Roberts was an assistant at Pikeville. He does own a business. He has been hired earlier (after BBranham and AHampton -quit) for SV as an assistant coach and has been working daily with the players assisting Saunders and since the resignation he has assumed responsibility of the team until a head coach is appointed. From what I hear he was an excellent high school player and honored with several awards. Parents from Pikeville speak very highly of him.
05-27-2009, 01:46 AM
I commend Roberts for keeping the team together now, but if he has no HC experience and is not even employed by the school system other than an assistant coach, I don't see how his hiring could be justified. FD needs to find someone with HC experience and new blood for SV to continue growing. There are lots of good players in high school, but that doesn't mean they could coach. Big difference in taking orders and giving them.

Personally i feel Valley should go right back, and hire someone from another state or Western Kentucky.
I know it wont happen but i feel that would help a lil, if he can of course deal with the politics.
