Estill County 2009 Football
#31
how will estill's new offense compare with the devastating double wing offense
#32
i am also wondering what aspects of estill's program will the new coach try to improve on, already had a devastating offense, and a aggressive defense. kids played hard for jones too, it will be interesting to watch.
#33
how will the leaving of jones affect the powell co / estill county rivalry
#34
i am sure the new coach knows he really needs to win that one, estill has won the last three meetings in football
#35
Coach thats Powell County for ya. they think that there better than everyone else and they absolutley have no respect for no one, none of there administration does, there fans dont.
#36
will the engineers be as strong as they have been the past few years, whatever they do in the weight room made a difference, heard it is something different
#37
wonder why?

Wow, thought of the day, you sure have alot of questions. First, I have all the respect in the world for Mike Jones and I am keeping the weight program that he was using. Second, we will take one game at a time. Do I want to beat PC, you bet your butt. Not because of some so called rivalry, but because it is a District game. Our goal is to win the District and in order to do that we have to beat PC. Every team I have coached, I coach to be aggressive. Also, I am glad you seem to know what I think I should do or have to accomplish. Let me make it simple for you, we will play hard, be disciplined, have outstanding conditioning and thank the Good Lord for allowing us to participate in just an great sport. Thanks for the post and come watch the Engineers play smash mouth football.

i have the upmost respect for coach jones and wish him the best of luck where ever he goes but i think while he was here he didnt schedule the hard teams for us to play against, sure he schedule Russell along with the other ones, and the year we played Belfry they called us to play them in the pike county bowl. you cant do anything or get anywhere by beating the easy teams like Berea, Magoffin County and the others

Here is what I believe seperates me from most coaches. I realize that football is only a game (yes the greatest game ever evented, but still a game). I have fought for this country 3 times during different combat tours. I have held 18-19 year old American soldiers in my arms as they took their last breath. I have seen 11 and 12 year old foreign boys bleed out right in front of me in less than a minute, feeling helpless because I knew there was nothing to to. I have seen and been apart of enough death and destruction to last 10 lifetimes. So, thought for the day, will we be or do all the things you ask. Only time will tell. However, it is still a game and one that I love and want to share that love and enthusiasm with my players because they need to realize that this will be some of the best times of their life. Nope, I don't have trouble putting it in prospective partner, I am truly blessed.

If the kids and people of EC will keep their eyes and ears open. They will find that they have been blessed to have a man of such character to fall in there lap and even more than that one thats gonna teach those young men to be hardworking and respective young student athletes! After all theres a huge lesson in Coach's last response. LIFE is real and sports only last but a short time.

this is all so true, thanks, i am sure estill will continue its winning ways, best of luck to the engineers, sometimes i think we do put too much emphasis on sports,
#44
estill county has not experienced alot of success in football, although they talk like they have, two great years, was ranked as high as #3, out of the graveyard so to speak, some good work has been done just wanting to know how it is going to stay that way, evidently jones did something right to get it where its at, now the job is to sustain that, can it be done with what is left there. jones coached me at hazard and i hope him the best, last time i talked to him he was down, keep your head up bro
#45
we have had some great teams, of course if you just look at the record there were alot of 8-3 and 7-4 teams, but we were playing woodford, danville, scott, boyle, rockcastle, mercer, lincoln, pineville(before there was a bell county high school) breathitt, not magoffin, powell, lewis, phelps. we also had 3 d1 players multiple lower level college players. most of those teams would walk through this district as estill should next year. unfortunately when the railroad left we lossed alot of talent, so yes we have had alot of great teams.
#46
a few not alot, things are different now, check out khsaa record over past 20 years
#47
estill has not had any d-1 players lately, and if they did where did they play, go, did they graduate a d-1 player
#48
my statement was talking about before the railroad left, which was about 16 years ago, so yea only a few in the last 20 years probably 5. jeremy niece-kentucky, robbie wiseman- kentucky, chris winkler (morehead state-d1aa) all full rides. i think wink was the only player that graduated college, but what does that have to do with high school.

not robbie, but he was first team all-state defense and second team all-state offense in the same year

Buddy Arvin was also on scholarship at Morehead. A number of signees with Union through the years: Andar Niece, Jimmy Ray Farthing, Mike Jones to name a few.

nothing, and i dont disrespect those guys, dont have anything to do with right now, bottom line estill went to region final, with no d-1 kids, two games away from state title, lost to state runner-up, past dont matter, what matters is what is going on today and in the near future, all of what you talk about is good stuff, great estill players etc
#52
I must agree with you there. What matters is now. I have a sign posted in the weight room that says, "If not you, then who - If not now, then when". I believer there is alot in that statement. What these young me have to realize, what they did the last two years will not win them a game this season. What they do in the weight room and conditioning between now and July 15th will mean everything. If we wait to July 15th to get ready, it is to late. I have a great staff and a wonderful group of young men, so I look for good things.

My other sign in the locker room sums up what it means to be an Engineer:

Engineer’s Code
1. Engineer’s are disciplined people committed to excellence.
2. Engineer’s are positive people.
3. Engineer’s treat training sessions as personal proving grounds.
4. Engineer’s are persistent.
5. Engineer’s live a balanced life.
6. Engineer’s serve others.
7. Engineer’s are CHAMPIONS

but they did get somewhere, how about harlan, taylor, somerset, berea was 8-2

Finally, only a few young men will have the opportunity to play college football. In my opinion, there is no correlation between how many of your players sign DIV 1 scholarships and winning championships.

Discipline, hard work, self sacrifice, teamwork, and chemistry are what correlates in to winning Championships. Oh, and a little luck doesn't hurt.

very well said, and a guy out front leading them, it will not happen, cannot happen without great leadership, estill had it with jones and now has it with coach luttrell, and that is what it will take to keep the program at the level it is right now, one thing that coach luttrell has that jones didnt is help from the administration, so if it can happen without it ,the sky is the limit with those guys getting on board. If they are not just talking, which has happened in the past. i talked to mike many times, he could have left many times and he did not because of those kids.

thought for today Wrote:but they did get somewhere, how about harlan, taylor, somerset, berea was 8-2

Somerset was 5-6 somerset just plain sucked this year

Taylor County 8-4 Taylor was the only other good team we played this year and we ran all over them.

Berea 8-2 but they didnt play no one.

Harlan County wasnt that bad.

i would like to see Estill schedule some harder teams like some of the lexington schools, bell county, danivlle, etc. etc.

Brethitt does and look, it makes them better each and every year and a big part of there success was and is Fugate.

i never said it mattered, you said we never had strong teams and i simply said that we did. the d1 players deal was to show that we even had big name players back in the day. also did you really compare berea with any of those teams that i listed. but 1 thing it is a new day and best of luck to the neers. by the way harlan will become a powerhouse, larkey is a fantastic person and coach.

First of all I dont think you know as much as you think you do.Confusedhh:
Somerset was a pretty good team better than Taylor. Harlan was better than not that bad, they had an above average team. So now your facts a bit more before you speak.

How can Harlan be not that bad and Somerset suck, when Harlan beat Somerset by less than a TD in the last game of the season.
Somerset had some players and a quality coach in Cobb.

Harlan was a very good team, they played with Breathitt and Estill, that sums up a lot right there. Somerset was very talented, and the best team in the opposite district, they struggled with Estill but played well against Harlan. Give the credit when its due.
