No Comparison !
The coach before these two was living in the shadow of Coach Hilton, the program was already in TROUBLE when the new staff took over.
Yea it was just the best district in school history when he left. Seems like he has done well since he left.:howdy:

jetpilot Wrote:LOL!!! Take out Allen Central, Betsy Layne, South Floyd, Jenkins, Paintsville (who is now horrible), Phelps, Harlan (horrible) and the like and what is Pikeville's record?
Pikeville's mediocrity (and everyone but you seems to realize that they are mediocre or worse) is much harder to take than Pike Central's because Pikeville was a powerhouse for many years and PC is trying to build a program.
Yep! They were powerhouses in 86', 87', and 89'. Go to the bathroom, shave the mullet and get out of the 80's. Pikeville has had some good teams since then, but powerhouses, I'm not sure.
What year was it that Pikeville lost to South Floyd?
How many State Championships since 1989?
How many times have they been to the State Finals since 1989?
How many times have they been to the semifinals since 1989?
Pikeville's best years since 1989 was when Barret Rogers, Matt Branham, and Jeremiah Akers were around, not too many of those types of kids at Pikeville for some time now, except for Harmon, who came from Virgie.
Pikeville's days of steamrolling everyone are long gone. With Chapman at the helm, it won't be long until PC becomes the school that most of the Pikeville area kids will embrace. Coach Ben Howard will have his work cut out for him. I just can't figure out where he's going to bring kids in from though. With the new middle school at Mullins and Chapman at PC and all the kids Northeast of PC will surely go to Belfry
and I don't think SV will ever lose kids again to Pikeville(has been the opposite as of late). It sure won't be like the late 80's.

Thinking like this is what killed Pikeville football. But it isn't going to be around anymore.

Thinking like what?
Not doing things the right way for so many years is what has hurt Pikeville Football!
Thinking that just because you wear maroon and white that everyone will be scared to death and just roll over. That may have been the case in the late 80's, but those days are long gone. Most of the other schools have been doing things the right way and have now caught up to Pikeville and some local prorams have passed them up, all because they want to win and have an administration that alloows certain things to be put in place that is a help to their program instead of a hinderance.

Here it is 4 years later and they still just have 4 wins a year. I guess 2008 4 win season is Poynter fault as well?

A coach isnt going to make any difference in this situation. Especially one thats not from pikeville.

Evidently, I missed out not being from Pikeville.
You are out of your mind if you think that:
1. A truly great football coach cant turn things around (not good or average, or a good man mind you, but COACH).
2. You have to be from Pikeville to be a successful coach in that area.
Is Haywood from Pikeville or Belfry?
Where is Hilton from? He was successful at several schools, he was not born at 3 different places was he?
What about Bill Letton or Paul Rains or Jim Matney....where they born in about 3 different places like Hilton?
It does not matter where you are from. I hope you are around to see what Chapman can do. I am the kind to say I told you so.

Maybe what Pikeville needs is a coach from outside of the area to come in and take control of entire football program, one who right up front says this is my programs and the I will run it as I need and I and only I will decide how things are going to be done.
In reading this board and another from this statet appears the good ole boys club so to speak is the route of the problem in Pikeville.

It's just the opposite. Non-Pikeville people have been running the program and the Pikeville people are taking it back as we speak...

Parents running things does not work I do not care if it is a coach from the area or out of the area. I would bet an outside hard-nosed coach who has a pair would be more apt to change things around over a home grown guy who might bot want to tick off the ones who think they are calling the shots.
If my kid was going there and I have fist hand knowledge other parents were causing these kinds of problems I would pull my kid out just that fast.

I like Pikeville a lot and hope they can get it turned around.
Coach Jackson, I think would have and after talking to him I understand why he left.I learn he is a class act and a man of his words.

So if it is so easy then why didn't McNamee turn it around? He won a lot of games over at Pikeville. Must have been a good COACH there. Theres lots of good coaches over on Pond Creek, why aren't they beating a path over to Central? Why hasn't Matney, or Hilton or Rains staked their claim up on Buckleys Creek? You have to understand what you are up against and the deck is definitely stacked against you at Central.
1. Your sandwiched between 2 traditional powers that are more attractive for a lot of reasons for your middle school players. The open enrollment policy in Pike County keeps the powers, in power. I mean honestly, if your son lived on John's Creek and was a good football player where would you send them?
2. Pikeville used to get talent from all around. Lets examine the Honaker twins for just an example. They lived there in Floyd County until coming into the 9th grade when they first enrolled at Pike Central and then later at Pikeville (the day before summer practice started). Obviously Pikeville was more attractive for those two particular athletes. And where again did the Harmon boy go to middle school?
3. A person who is not from the area doesn't know who his friends and enemies are and he will definitely have both at Central. So you say treat them all the same. That won't work in Pike County. Pike County is the most political place on the planet and if you are to suceed there you must be in with the right people. Poynter lost out because of that and McNamee too. What about assistant coach Josh Preece? Wasn't he to removed from his job basically over politics? And don't even get me started on Tussey.
4. Lets say you did get all your players that Pikeville or Belfry wanted. How are you going to match what Belfry gets out of Virginia and West Virginia? They built the school where it is for a reason and it isn't academics. Oh yea, there in your district.
5. Lets look at facilities. I haven't been to Pike County in a while but Id say that Centrals facilities are still 4th just ahead of Phelps. Why can't they play on plastic grass? Why hasn't a big coal company come in and built them a field? The reason is the powers that be don't really care about Central football. They always used to talk about a level playing field and wanting to flip a coin to see who'd win but everyone knew where their bread was buttered and it wasn't at Central.
I could keep going but lets look back at who would have more a fighting chance at Central. A person that is from there and would know these things or a person that is not from there and will get told everything in the world? And they will get told everything. My buddy spent many a day setting in the funny shaped PCBOE getting told everything that he wanted to hear. Nothing ever came of it. Its all about looks. The BOE wants to hire a big name coach so that they can look good. "Oh look we hired a former coach of Pikeville, he has a state title ring, he coached for a tradtional power, etc, etc. We did all of that because we want to flip a coin for who the best team in Pike County will be." Its all about the powers that be and the quicker you understand that the better off you will be.
My advice to Chapman if he does take this job is get ready for the knives that will be heading for his back at all times. Because there are an infinite supply of them and they come from all different angles.

You are way off base NCF. The administration dropped the ball badly on the last 2 coaching hires and the community went to the last school board meeting to voice concerns on this hire. Two local guys who played on multiple state championships were added to the hiring committee. So that's how things are getting fixed, people who built the program getting involved. They will fix it fast enough because they know from experience how it got built in the first place.

I hope you are correct if so I will be glad becasue I like Pikeville.
If you are and I think you will be wrong then you can use my blue print on how to fix things.:1:

You have hit it right on the head! And if you think that an outsider can, would be allowed to say "this is my team and I will run it the way I want to" is like finding a diamond in a pile of coal. The "Good Old Boy" syndrome runs deep in Pike County.
01-26-2009, 09:16 AM
Will the new coaches have to teach any classes? From what I've been told is, if you coach you don't have to teach. I think that change is good if no progress is being made. I've heard there were a lot of problems at PC. Not just with this football team but with the boy's basketball team also. Good luck to both coaches.

Pike Central could get some more respect if they didnt have a dump field. They need turf and new bleachers. And its better separated from the Softball field.
