There were a bunch of us standing around talking and a ref was telling about doing it. If they actually did it I don't know but they said they did.

The refs just want something to do before the game starts. There is no reason a player should not be allowed to dunk in warm ups.

I think they should be able to dunk in warmups. It gets the fans pumped up. Chances are very slim that most of these guys will ever get a break away dunk in the game anyway. So let them throw a few down in warmups.

I remember East Carter lost by 2 to Elliott Co. last year and one of the kids got a T because he dunked after the refs came out.. I dont really care either way, but then again i cant dunk lol

I don't see a problem with it personally. People are talking about players getting hurt. If you can't dunk without the possibility of getting hurt, then you don't need to be dunking. If you decide to anyways, and you get hurt, then that's your own problem because you should have never been dunking in the first place. If you can't dunk the ball without grabbing a hold of the rim, then it's not considered dunking in my opinion. Dunking doesn't constitute grabbing the rim. The best dunkers just slap the rim while throwing down.

Kids could get hurt first of all, many people sued, starting with Refs, then school, then board of education, etc... Another thing that could happen, a lot of gyms don't have the right kind of back boards to take a lot of dunking, to many dunks, could crack or even break, shattering and then no game or worse someone get eyes put out or really hurt. If the kids want to practice dunking, do it in practice, if they can do it already, use warm ups to get their legs loose so they can really dunk on someone during the game. Save the dunks for the game. no question!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with this... Don't risk getting hurt before the game.. Use that time to get loose enough that way you will be able to go through with a good dunk over someone in the game without getting hurt...

I don't really see the point myself. I think if you are not going to allow it while the refs are out, why allow it at all?
Anyone know the REAL reason it was put into place to begin with?
In High School we were playing Boyd County and we were dunking in warm ups. There were about 2-3 people that dunked/tried to dunk in front of me and when I went up and dunked it the rim broke and came off in my hand! No one got hurt or anything, but it did cause a HUGE delay in starting the game and made a lot of people mad with the Boyd County School System.
This is the only reason I can see them having a no dunk rule in warm ups, but it would have to be for the entire warm up period, not just while the refs were out.

I played in a league in Lexington while in College and they didn't allow dunking in a game. If you dunked during the game it resulted in a Technical Foul and the basket was waved. Said it was unsportsmanlike.

whata gay league

gotta obey the rules!

I think you should be allowed. It gets the kids in the stand pumped up. They love to see it thrown down. I mean come on it's no big deal. Let them have some fun.

I think you should be allowed to, its a part of the game of basketball. I don't think you should be able to "pop" the rim in any way shape or form, but just to go up and dunk I think there should be no problem as long as theres no popping or hanging on the rim.
12-05-2008, 05:55 PM
If they can dunk, let them. As long as they can dunk and do it without causing injury.

i completely agree, what is the harm in dunking the ball in warm-ups...no one is saying you are going to hang on the rim or taunt the other team. it is just warming up. this is a bad rule

I dont think they should dunk during warmups but they should still get up there to get loose.

Excellent post.

i think it should be up to the coaches what the players do in warmups..if they want to dunk for their 5 minutes the let them do it! its not going to hurt anyone..

If you can dunk then dunk whenever you want, warm-ups, game or whenever. As for liability, I see worse things happen in games than could happen on a bad dunk. And if a school has no collapsing rims then they need to get them!

Its part of the game. Why wouldn't you be allowed to practice dunking during warmups? Thats like asking if shooting 3-pointers should be allowed during warmups. If you can do it in the game, you can do it in warmups. Thats how I see it.
12-05-2008, 11:59 PM
i see both sides of the arguement but for some reason i think u shouldnt be allowed
12-06-2008, 02:45 AM
This is the dumbest rule in HS basketball. The fans want to see it, the kids want to be able to do it. If you're waiting til 10 minutes before the game starts to get your "practice" in then you're in trouble anyway.
12-06-2008, 04:32 AM
Warmups are warmups. If you dunk, layup or shoot 3's. What does it matter? You are warming up to your game. A warm up play should not matter. It's practice, warmup before the game. Should a 3 point pratice shot be counted?
12-07-2008, 01:32 AM
what does dunking in warmups hurt anything??? as long as you don't hang on the rim or try to tear it down or something stupid then let the kids get pumped and dunk in warmups
12-07-2008, 01:56 AM
yeah they should its fun for the fans and the players... if someone gets hurt doing it then that is just bad luck but they should be allowed to try at their own risk its their career they are putting on the line when they go up so let them do what they want.
12-07-2008, 02:02 AM
I have herd both arguments and I believe you should be able to because it gets the student section and fans fired up for the game. And as far as the risk of getting hurt if a player cant dunk and everyone knows he cant dunk thats where the coach steps in and acts like and coach and tell the player to stop before somthing happens.
12-09-2008, 02:00 AM
Dunking gets both the fans and the player pumped up. It should be allowed without question. If you can't dunk in warm ups once the refs come out you shouldnt be allowed to dunk in a game. The officials are present during both.
