57th - Coach Wireman, His team finished first and that is why everyone plays to finish first.
Darren Rice - With a favorable schedule, the Lady Cardinals did play with a different attitude this past season yet, did not beat Baldwin and Paintsville when many felt Sheldon Clark would.
58th
Harold Tackett - Replacing Akers and all of the baggage that he inherited, still made it to the Semi-finals, and who knows if in the bottom brackett could have been in the finals yet, same results though when facing Johnson Central.
Mark Martin - Took a program that was supposedly only a pulse away from being dead into the regionals. His "gritty" group was 6 mins. away from the semi-finals.
59th
Rodney Rowe - Yes, another first year coach that inherited a group that had been well coached and won the school's first All A title. Did not make it to regionals and that hurts.
60th
Stephen Butcher - Another appearance for the coach, still as earlier comments stated it's all about the talent, and I would say every coach in the region would like to have coached a Haley Ratliff and Kayla Lowe and get a transfer name A.d. Slone
J.R. Vanhoose - Took over a program that was on the upside of things and with the transfer of Riley, made it to the All A finals.
IMO, these are legit picks for COY of the region
Interested to hear the comments from this post,
First of all we have to remember that the coy is decided before tournament play so no one knew that Vanhoose nor Rice would make the regional tournament. So I guess you could say the tournaments don't matter in this case. Equally, no one knew that JC would go to state.
I am not sure why they even have this award.
I think that we have some good talent in the 15th . I just hate to see everyone come on here and put these coaches down. They spend hours upon hours of watching films and practicing and they put everything that they have into their jobs. It is not an easy job. I am sure if people came and sat and watched us do our jobs that they wouldn't think that we did everything "perfect" either. I know that I don't put in the hours in my job that these coaches/ teachers put into theirs.

 Now you all know that this sort of thing is nothing to get "bent out of shape" over. I guarantee that J.R. isn't.
If you all want to... you can do something among yourselves to show your appreciation ... you could throw a party, a dinner, or you could swear an oath to never 2nd guess/negatively criticize his coaching/or bad mouth him on here or in public.... there's all kinds of things you could do!

Who and when does the voting?

Just to reply to earlier statements...maybe the award should be awarded after the regional tournament. Isn't the regular season games a preparation for the tournament games....
One school can have a great regular season, posting lots of wins and playing a schedule that benefits the coaches won / loss records yet, the last lost game is the one that many remember on how the season went. (fair or unfair) ?
In the response who would have figured Johnson Central would have had a chance to win the regional?...
Look at the team in the regionals and then ask what coach would have liked to have been the coach of a respective team...
As said earlier, "talent makes a coach a lot better"....
Comments on the teams that each would have liked to have been the coach?

That is what makes this award different. Coaches vote on each other not records. If you win the district you get coach of the year, if you winn this or that you get it. so do we need to wait until the team that wins that way we know who wins, why vote just make it like the district and who ever win gets coach of the year. For those of you who have not figured this out. Each HEAD coach from each team from the 15th gets one vote (and you can not vote for yourself) you vote for the person that you think has done a good job. For those that have coach they know what that means. How does you team play, how do you act, did they get better, etc. I know that i am waiting my time on this site becauese I am sure that I will get a flood of negative responxes and ALL the reasons that I am wrong. To all the coaches out there, good luck, thank you becaue you will not hear it (unless you win) and never doubt what you do

All coaches deserve alot of praise. The mountain coaches deserve alot of respect

I thought they should at least make it to the region to get this.

I think you are one of the few that gets it. Coaches dont get the cedit for the time that they send in it

With the transfers they (Phelps) are getting, they should be good. As far as Butcher goes, he will be fine at Mason. The 15th lost a good coach in Butcher and I doubt any coach sent him anywhere. Outside of Wireman, there is not another coach in the 15th that would have been considered for the Mason Co job. It takes more than politics to get that job.
