Coach at Sheldon Clark
#31
If Frankie Smith applied they better jump on it while they can. The man was an awesome coach for TV. Coached a couple state championship teams and a Mr WV basketball player. Is the Mike Smith the Mike that coached Tolsia and Gilbert? I believe he played some semi pro football as well.

Some times a change is needed. Best of luck to who ever takes over.

in my opinion mike smith will get this job because he is supposly related to mark blackburns wife. which means mike smith would listen to what mark said and play he's son.Smile which is so funny. this kid could't make 1 out of 10 layups. if the right person gets the job it should be roger harless. roger also won a state championship in west virgina and beat mikie smith and tolsia every year. others that have apllied is the coach from greenup county, johnson centrals asst. not for sure his name, lenore middle school coach pedroSmile thats a joke. heard from a good source that johhny martin is thinking about appling. overall there's some good names but it will be intersting to see who gets this job because i would' be suprised to see a no name get it because for the next four years mark blackburn only has one concern not to win games and go to the state, just to make sure his son gets to play. i really feel sorry for the basketball players on this team that work hard. because blackburns going to put somebody in there that don't care how hard you work but who you are.

I don't even understand how the Brad Tiller rumor came about, he has zero interest in Martin County, zero interest in Sheldon Clark and our school system, they have nothing to offer children as far as education goes. His Father, Stepmother, and brother Trevor moved to Paintsville for that very reason. I don't think Brad would bring his kids to such a poor educational facility, whether or not coaching is an offer. He and his wife are happy in Grayson and will most likely stay that way.

Anyway, he didn't play in Myrtle Beach, did he? He played for the Burlington Indians but didn't make it to the big leagues due to injuries.

I really don't know who I want as coach. If Roger Harless leaves his girls, does Coach Newsome step up again? Lets hope not.

Bring an outsider in, I say.

I don't mean to be rude but.....
I am sick and tired of hearing people that live in our county bash our school system. I received an excellent education and hope and pray that I live there forever and send my children there. As far as coaches go, JR just couldn't produce the wins. He had one good year (2004), but look at the caliber of athletes he had. All this stuff about him getting fired just because he wouldn't play Mark Blackburn's kid is BS. If he had the record, he would still be there. I love Roger Harless; he is a great man, but I don't know that he would be the best guy for the job. Anyway, Coach Newsome was an excellent coach, producing two regional championship teams and then a number of other teams that played in the regional finals, so even if she was the coach, I don't see how it could hurt. They aren't exactly amazing anyway.

And another thing I HATE: traitors that leave our school system because they think they are too good and above everyone else.

But....I do agree with you that an outsider would be the best bet. However, Greg Cornette would be a great man for the job, I would love it if he would apply.

Oh, and I don't know that he played at Myrtle Beach, but he did live there for a while, so maybe.....

When did you graduate?

I graduated in 2004 and very few teachers at Sheldon Clark were dedicated to educating their students then...

If SC is such a great educational facility, why are they ranked at Tier 4 and in jeopardy of losing their school completely if test scores and college admissions don't raise?

It's not about leaving because you're "too good" or "better than anyone" its leaving to BETTER YOURSELF and get prepared to succeed in the adult world... Sheldon Clark doesn't provide that. They produce kids that are almost incapable of functioning anywhere but that surrounding area.

And no, you weren't being rude, I am, that's what it takes to get people to understand how educationally handicapping Sheldon Clark can be for the average student.

There are successful students that come from there, but most often it is NOT because of the school.. they have parents that are overly driven for their child's success (not that it is a bad thing) and let it be known how important higher education is.

I graduated the same year you did, had the same classes you did, and have been friends with you for a while, and you'll probably be able to figure out who this is after you read it. And you are right, I've had great success and I feel I could definitely function somewhere outside of our area because I had great parents who pushed me EXTREMELY hard. They didn't teach me chemistry, pre-cal, or AP English, the teachers at SC did. I want to live in our area, just as many others that were in OUR classes. I think our teachers tried the hardest they could to help those students who were willing to learn. Not all of our classmates were, and with some people, you just can't do anything. They can't make someone go to college who does not want to go. However, alot of the ones that have gone on to any college, whether it be a community college or university, have had success.

I admit our school looks extremely crappy, and they are trying to fix that, if the state will give the okay. I love our school, I always have, and I always will.

I'm not trying to attack you, I just get tired of the whole principle. It hurts to hear people talk about our hometown that way and I will defend it.

And as far as people transferring goes, we had 6 people in our class transfer out of our school system: 4 to Paintsville, one to Scott County, and one to Rose Hill. They ended up no better off than those that they could have graduated with, academically speaking. So what if Alex got to play in the state tournament, and Justin got to sit the bench at Rupp. IMO, if they had stayed, our basketball team would have walked to the state tournament our senior year and JR probably wouldn't be in this mess.

5 of the 6 are in college just like we are and other people we graduated with, and I don't know that any of them are majoring in anything equivalent to "rocket science." AND, only two of these people received athletic scholarships for college: Desi for basketball, and Tyler for golf. Think about how many the people in our class received, and I'm not included in that group because I am not on scholarship. Yes, Alex definitely could have, but there were others in our class that could have but did not.

In fact, one of my best friends transferred to Johnson Central this year to get away from the basketball team. It wasn't to receive a better education. If things had been different athletically, he probably would have stayed.

It's not a bad thing that people return to our area. Maybe it's good that people cannot function outside of it. We need them to stick around and preserve it...if they can stay off drugs....lol...but that is a different story altogether.

Look, I'm not trying to argue with you. I know who you are, and I knew who you were when I replied the first time. I've been friends with you for a while and I'm not going to let an internet site ruin that. The site is about opinions, I gave mine, you gave yours.

See you at the turkey dinner!

Good grief it's not Starnes that applied for the job it is one of his assistants if you would call him that. I almost fell out of my chair when I found out Randy Ward had applied for a high school head coaching job. I would love to here what he listed as some of his accomplishments through out his illustrious career. I bet I could probably name three of them. He was the ball boy on the 1975 JCHS regional championship team, he guided the WR Castle Tomcats to one maybe two Johnson County elementary tittles and he was an award winning radio color commentator for last years 15th region champs. On a side note he also set a world record for saying the word absolutely in a radio broadcast during an entire season. I think the final count on total absolutely's spoken were 985,412. Smile

I certainly hope so! Jaryd and I have been friends for a while and it would be great to see him back! But I can't say I wanna see Harless as the coach. I like him, but I think Hicks should be a no-brainer for the job. But, this is Martin Co. and we seem to screw ourselves over sometimes.

Roger is the logical choice, espically since I heard that there is no teaching job to go with the coaching job, but he is in an awful good spot right now.
As far as Crum coming back I think it was the wrong move for him to leave in the first place and returning would be hard. He could possibly be ruled ineligible unless his family moved again. Either way if he returns it would ruin all the junk people said on here about it having to do with the quality of school and garbage like that. Be awful hard to admit you were wrong I would think.

I agree, it would ruin all of the stuff that people say on here about our school and hopefully it would show that SC is not the p.o.s. that everyone thinks. And as far as him leaving in the first place, I never would have done it, but I think it was personal reasons and not just moving to a better basketball team. But I don't know. What kind of coach do you think Roger would be? I like the guy alot, but I know alot of people at Tug Valley were not satisfied with him.
