Who will be the new head coach at Sheldon Clark next year and when will they hire??
03-08-2007, 08:46 PM
Many people have put in applications for the job, but I'm not sure on the names.

Here's what I've gathered the past couple days. Mike Smith who doesn't teach but used to coach has applied. Other names I've heard on the list are Allen Hatcher, Johnny Martin, Les Trimble,Jim Hicks,Roger Harless. Who know's what will happen at Sheldon clark.

lets just hope they can geta good coach that can help he boys get some wins

I think Johnny Martin will be the next coach at Sheldon Clark!!He has already been a coach there once and he is a class act that would help their program out.

who does he coach right now

Coach Martin has already been to Sheldon Clark once, I really don't see this happening guys.

I agree JJ. I don't think Johnny Martin will ever coach another school in the 15th region unless it is Allen Central. It would not be right for him at another school. I really hope everything works out for one of the better coaches that has walked the sidelines in our state. I want to also say that what had been talked about with the consolidation of Allen Central, Betsy Layne and South Floyd and possibly Prestonsburg will not be as soon as thought. Prestonsburg I am sure will fight to keep their school in town and they have every right to do so. Losing a school can really devastate a small community.

I think its goin to come down to Mike Smith or Roger Harless
03-14-2007, 08:19 PM
If Roger Harless wants it bad enough, he will get it.
03-16-2007, 03:44 PM
Heard at work today that all Roger Harless has to do is say yes.
03-16-2007, 05:10 PM
lets just hope we get a better one than what we had.

a coach is only as good as the talent he has!

On another message board it has Jim Hicks of Greenup Co. as a serious contender for the job.

I don't know if I would want that kinda of a watchful eye over my school or not. Cause you know every time a new kid shows up the KHSAA would be all up in it.

Not sure how true but I heard that someone with Sheldon Clark had possibly contacted Brad Tiller about taking the job. It was also stated that he would possibly be pulling double duty as baseball coach and assistant with the football team. From what I was told Tiller was a three sport star while at Sheldon Clark and went on to play semi-pro baseball for the Cleveland Indians. Could be a big deal for the programs if they can land someone of his talent.

Jim hicks would be the worst hire they could make. Look at his track record. They would be better off hiring the school janitor.

:yikes: Thats a shocker right there CatDawg. I wouldnt mind at all if it came true. Brad Tiller was a PHENOMENAL athlete, i believe he played for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans?? Not sure, but he is one of the FASTEST guys i have ever seen on a football field, baseball field, and basketball court. I kind of hope its true CD. But i want Roger Harless, i absolutely love that guy.

haha, I remember seeing Brad play when i was probably 7 or 8. He is pretty much the reason that I wanted to play baseball as a kid. He and my brother went to Sheldon Clark together.

You already have one of the best baseball coaches around.

It would be nice to see Brad Tiller as an assistant coach at SC. Tiller and Coach Hall would be a great coaching staff. It would be fun to watch what they would come up with.

I seriously doubt Brad was contacting or would even consider taking the job. He is a good friend of mine and was prol the best pure athlete to come out of Sheldon Clark or the 15th region in the last 20 years. He played a few years in the minor leagues but stayed injured most of the time and never really worked hard enough to make it to the show. He lives in Grayson now and seems pretty content with his job and being a husband and dad. I'd love to see him brought in as an assistant in all 3 sports but I seriously doubt it will ever happen. If he is offered the head job in any of the 3 sports Mark Blackburn should be run out of town because he isn't qualified, especially in basketball. I've heard from someone in the boards office that Roger Harless will get it. Current Belfry middle school coach Bobby Varney has been mentioned. He's a young guy who's hungry and eager for the opportunity, I personally think he would do a very good job. I've also heard that ex Tug Valley and current Miami of Ohio assistant Frankie Smith applied but I doubt thats true. If it is he would be a no brainer for the job and hands down the most qualified person.

As far as baseball goes if I remember correctly Tiller was an assistant coach at the high school level in Mrytle Beach, SC. Not sure the name of the school but I'll due some research.
I agree that just by playing pro ball wouldn't make you a good coach but I feel that Tiller has been exposed to much more of a baseball atmosphere than most coaches. So I disagree that he wouldn't be qualified for a head high school coaching position. Besides Tiller probably has several contacts in many baseball organizations where he could probably get great advice to help the younger Cardinal players.
I haven't spoken with him in years but I know that he use to be involved in many camps and would probably want to bring the same type of atmosphere to Sheldon Clark.
Besides if the Cardinals don't want him maybe Lawrence County or Paintsville could use him.

Frankie would be my chose also but if he doesn't actually apply who knows.
Of all the others I have heard if I was SC Varney would be my 3rd choice after Frankie and Trimble. If he has the athletes he will play a fast paced style that SC hasn't played in years. If Frankie or Trimble get the job the first person I would call for an Asst. is Varney.
