Thanks Trojan.... I liked that post!!!

phs1986 Wrote:Well..... I am not blaming anyone on Phelps' loss but Phelps.... As for my husband... I can promise you that he has forgotten more about football than some will ever know!! LOL>.... If you wish to see pictures of the metal impressions in my childs side (above his hip pad area) I will be glad to post them. Yes, he was kicked but that is football!!! I don't like dirty playing but in football like I said in an earlier post.... it's a contact sport! AND... who cares who played where... the game is over and done with... BELIEVE me... a learning experience for the youngins at Phelps... and OH... BTW...the 2 kids you were talkin about being bigger than P'villes team.... They are only playing their 1st year of football!!!!
it does not matter if it is their first year or not. you said pikeville was bigger, and that call was way off.
#33
if they can field a team they should if at all possible........it is about the kids
#34
They need to step it up
#35
They are working on it!! Some new coaching staff and new kids to boot! Mine has played for 4 years now but some of the kids have only played this year!!!
#36
Robinette being out hurts them alot along with Gannon not playing. Hard for small schools to succeed when your athletes do not come out! Is Robinette out for the year..Heard that the odds were good that he was..
#37
Nope.. he is back. Actually he has been at practice since the PCB. He was released and is playing now.
#38
Glad to hear he is back!
#39
Thanks!! He is my UH... nephew.. LOL.... I am glad too!!!

As a teacher of these junior high school kids at Phelps and a graduate of Pikeville High school, I can certainly tell you that I have experienced both sides of this argument. Watching these kids come to school with cleat marks on them, black eyes, etc. oversteps the boundaries of what should be a fun game. I had spent two days reassuring them that if nothing else, Pikeville would play them clean and they could use it as a learning experience. As it turned out, I was wrong. What I saw went far beyond the reach of sportsmanship in some areas, and in some areas it was a perfectly clean game.

Both teams had big boys (yes, Pikeville has them too) and we all know about the tradition that surrounds Pikeville football, but one big loss is absolutely no reason for anyone to question whether or not a school should disband their football program. When I was in high school, our teams thrived on destroying opponents, but that is not what high school sports should be about. High school sports should be about teaching patience, sportsmanship, respect, loyalty, and integrity.

This Phelps team, both Junior High and High School, is experiencing growing pains, but there have been new coaches added, new conditioning, new plays, etc. Let kids be kids, let them play, let them have fun and let them learn from these sports what they need to learn without questioning their abilities or their right to play.

To try to get this back on topic, I want to say this. I think Phelps as well as every high school in the country should have a football team. There will be times when even the small schools do very well, and other times when they dont. Every year cant be a great season. Every school at times has down years. What are they supposed to do, not have a team on the down years? How would they ever have any up years if the players do not get any experience when times are down? The reason for sports is not really to win every game. The players, coaches and schools hope so. The reason for sports in the school systems is to help teach teamwork. For the players to have a reason to keep their grades up. To try to be one of the lucky ones who may get a free ride in college. I think the question asked shouldnt be should Phelps still have a football team. But the question should be when are the coaches on some teams going to remember that they are employed by the school system as eductors and not just there to try to embarass other teams.

As far as what the other arguements in the other posts are concerned. I have watched Pikeville play football threw three different coaches. I have never seen them act like it was said on here about kicking and punching after plays. Teams like Pikeville, Belfry, Shelden Clark, and Paintsville have to much class and disipline to allow their players to do that. But I will say I was not at the game, so I dont know that for a fact that it didnt happen. I am just saying I have not seen it in the past and it would really surprise me if it did.

Warlock,

I agree with most of what you said.... and, most days, I still bleed maroon.... but some of what was going on was not as classy as the Pikeville teams I experienced under Hillard Howard, Bill Allara, Royce Mayo, Chris McNamee. But, to me, there is nothing like watching a high school football game on a Friday night.... especially in small towns where the town rises and falls based on the luck of the local team. Good luck to all of you.... play some football and have some fun!

good or not every school should have football. it teaches many valuable life lessons like discipline, hard work, team work, and leadership. but football is also a game of emotion, and yes sometimes emotions run to wild and kids heads go off the deep end. so yes some things are going to happen always has always will. the refs cant see everything, but just because the refs dont see it doesnt mean it is always the right thing to do. football is a war of mind and body, so kids go into the games and practices like it is war. hillard, bill, royce, and chris are all class act guys i should know i played for all 4 of them. but nothing was different from then to now at pikeville.

Yes, Phelps should have football.
I have seen Pikeville for 30 years and no, you never used to see Pikeville act like that but sadly in recent years I have kicking, punching, trash talking, on the jr hi level.

Train,

I am not sure when you played for hillard, bill, royce, and Chris, that seems impossible given the time period that those cover, but I agree with you that it seems as though the trash-talking and cocky attitudes that those coaches frowned upon has become the new norm in Pikeville! It is a shame to see a class program turn into what other people have always believed them to be.... hopefully they will turn it around!

Phelps,
GO OUT THERE AND SHOW WHAT YOU GOT FRIDAY!
You can win this one and forget about last week. Take it 1 week at a time.
This is this week, not SV week. Forget all that and focus 100% on getting a Win at Powell. Know with out a doubt right now your getting a big WIN Friday night.
Betsy lane beat them being down 22-12 at the half, This tells me BRING IT TO THEM for 4 QUARTERS and you get the win. If you have any speed at all get to the outside and bust a long one.Phelps wins this week, ABSOLUTELY THEY SHOULD HAVE FOOTBALL! Prove it this week!
#47
Advice,
Use this Friday.
Before you go out on that field, Someone on the team needs to say something about
"There are people out there questioning whether we should even have a football team"
LET'S SHOW THESE PEOPLE! Man if I was still playing and played for Phelps that would be gas to the fire. Action speeks loudest, Prove the doubters wrong. So, It's their Hall-of-fame bowl, Even better, You get a great chance to be the spoilers in their bowl.
You got scheduled for this game because they thought you were a win.
You have the opportunity to shut up your critics and BEAT A TEAM AT THEIR PLACE IN THEIR BOWL GAME. Get the win and know right now without a doubt that's exactly what your going to do. Phelps 20 Powell 16

yea! wooooooooooooooo! go get em BL
#49
I hope they can pull together and get some wins

impossible to those who dont believe is reality to the ones who lived it
and those coaches didnt frown upon anything we did and we are still the class act of pike county with belfry. this thread was supposed to be about teams that arent traditionally good, whether they should have a team or not. i just commented when my school was being slanderized and lied about. yes they should have a team but no one should get mad at a team that the thread isnt even about. oh and by the way we never cared what others believed we were. it was hard to when we were winning so much.

Didn't win last year in THIS age level.... I have it on video... Phelps A-team (11-12 year olds) won 42-12..... I do commend you on one thing though.... P'ville has always had a good program.......you were right about that... just didn't need to be so "smart" about it!!

Look, I'm not sure what your personal issues are, but I went to Pikeville High School also and lived through the GREAT years, not the almost great ones. The people I went to school with were the greatest in Pikeville history hands down.... I love PHS... always have, always will. My comment was simply based on my personal observation at the game last week. If you have a problem with that, then face reality, things have changed. I still consider my beloved Pikeville to be the class act of the mountains, but things have changed somewhat.... its even hard for me to admit.... Phelps should absolutely have a program.... the kids deserve the opportunity to learn the lessons that other students do win or lose.... I was in no way denegrating a program that has always strived for excellence, I just think that the cocky attitude does not need to become a Pikeville signature. Once again, just my opinion.... and I am entitled. No one slandered Pikeville, they spoke the truth to those of us who are willing to remove the rose colored glasses and see reality!

Ya the lil bucks won the co last yr and sure looks like they going to make a run for it again. along with 7&8th grades. like the old saying go'es if u can't beat em join um, u live closer to Belfry than Phelps If I'm not mistaken.....

Point taken and understood BelfryBuck!! LOLOL.... Smile

phelps jus dont have the players , coachs , or even the program..they need to get jus better players well..let me rephrase that ...they need more players to have better scout team and they need better coachs
#55
Phelps has WONDERFUL players, a building program with new things happening every year, and the coaches are doing well... they are doing.. LOLOL... As for scouting, I have no idea what they need to do here.... BUT, I can tell you that you will never meet up with another group of kids that has as much heart as these do. They are GOOD kids who enjoy playing or they would never stick to it with the luck they have had. Best of luck to them on the remainder of the year and Kudo's on the win Friday against SF...
#56
I'd love to see a road cut straight from Phelps to Belfry, even if it made Belfry move up a class in football. Population decrease has caused Phelps to not be as competitive as they once were, but they are still great kids and I'd be glad to welcome them into our community.
#57
I agree that they aren't as competitive as they once were.... when I went they were looked upon in basketball and baseball as great teams!! Also, it would probably put them (Belfry) up in class rankings but they would also be gaining some talent to make up for that!! These kids are good... just not enough of them!! Thanks for the positive words... I know the boys who read this will appreciate them!!!
#58
Don't they have pretty much entirely new coaching staffs at both the high and jr. high teams? That can have a pretty monstrous effect, believe me. Nothing sucks worse than getting a new coach and having to learn an entirely new offensive and defensive system, especially when you felt the system you already knew worked quite well.
#59
Yes! Both areas are being coached by new coaches... the high school team has had Hagerman last year and this year... BUT the Jr. High is under entirely NEW coaches this year. They have adapted pretty well but it is totally different then what they are used to. It is hard for people to understand who have never been in the Phelps area more than 2 hours.... Working over there, having a child (ren) who attend Phelps and being a part of EVERYTHING they do has taught me tons about the kids and programs over there. I love those kids and enjoy being around them. They are what it's all about!!! IMO that is!!!! LOLOL...

at this age level? who said anything about an age level? if i did then it was jr high 13-14 year olds or high school. so your 42-12 video can stay on the shelf right beside all your last place trophies.
yes you are entitled to your own opinion once again, but imo you shouldnt run it until you beat it.
