Cardinals get the home win, what most expected. Like we have said most of the year, SL, HC and Bell look like the 3 most likely teams to have a shot at 3 wins at the arena in a couple weeks….SL has the best big in region (Mabe) and the best individual defender in the region (Rawlings) and those two things are great things to have. I like the grit and fight our Black Bears have and we have a truly great all around player (Huff) along with 4 other very experienced starters that gives us a great chance at the coveted trip to Rupp and Bell is a serious top 3 team as well. There will also be several other teams very capable of winning region tourney games along for the ride at the Corbin Arena in a couple weeks! Get ready for a great tourney!!!

Like i said in the other thread, this was a perfect storm of things that make it impressive that even with 14 combined fouls with their three 6ft or taller men, they kept it neck and neck. Mabe is a physical player but he won’t get to the line that many times in the tourney.
I didn’t think they would have a wrinkle since the head coach was in a hospital for a week. They didn’t and that’s what hurt them.
Still fully expect a bobcat charter bus going to rupp in a few weeks!!

I listened To the game on radio, this was not actually neck and neck, neck and neck means a an even Steven 1 or 2 point game down to the wire. SL was up 6 to 9 points the entire 2nd half, that doesn’t qualify as neck and neck…It was a very competitive game, but SL pushed the lead to 24-16 in the 2nd qtr and stayed in control of this game from that point on. I’m not trying to say that Bell can’t beat SL, but I am saying that SL took control of this game midway through the 2nd qtr and stayed in control of it the rest of the way…..For the record, I fully expect either HC or SL to be the winner of the 13th region.

So do I. But I believe you met the team you'll have to get by to advance to Rupp. I'm disappointed the Cats didn't win tonight but hopefully they take the more important meeting coming up in a couple weeks. I believe Bell and South win their districts(who's hosting?) and end up in the title game for the trip to Rupp, in what will be a dandy.

They then both got thirds just as quick. And then buell fouled out with minutes to play. You are right, neck and neck isn’t 9. They did cut it to 4 before Buell fouled out. Bell will have to learn to play without fouling, even though it was a touch whistle, if they wanna beat mabe.
Once again, I have to give kudos to BOTH THESE TEAMS. One was just hoping that the head coach and his wife would be able to be back in the 606 after the most stressful and difficult time of their lives and got back this afternoon. Both teams were preparing for lesser opponents. Seen mabe in an interview say he woke up at 8 am ready for lynn camp and then had to really wake up when someone told him they are playing Bell County. I hope we get a matchup between these two later because I could tell Brad Sizemore either didn’t want to or didn’t have time to prepare for his signature “tweak.” Davis did the same thing. It’s almost like the matchup was WAY TOO GOOD for a senior night this close to the region where it’s almost a given they will face eachother.

Bell had no answer for the kid(as no one has Ferg looked like he was trying to suplex Mabe several times lol)and had their arms wrapped around him most of the night. Personally I believe Bell will dominate the 13th next year but this year everything will depend on region draw and I don't think you should order that charter bus just yet because come region time it will go thru HC or SL(both have played a more competative schedule and more experienced on the big stage). SL is going thru one of the toughest 7 game stretches in recent memory and depending on todays game could come out 5-2 which no one thought was possible. Are we gonna go ahead, a year in advance, and dismiss the '25-26 Corbin Redhounds since Bell will obviously dominate next season? Akins, Ellis, D. Farmer, Pietrowski is a pretty good core.

We have yet to see a good sample yet of how those 2 key players will jell for the hounds, I have only seen them play one time since Ellis became eligible. Plus the GA transfer already quit the team I heard? Talent wise they definately have the most but its hard to get Batman to put on Robins Cape. I will reserve judgement till I see more. You make good points. Good talent potential , for sure, but they have yet to show they can put it all together. I say Eli's coming back next season.

I was at this game, maybe 6 or 7 sketchy calls equally called on both. Clay County won something like 127 straight at home. Then there was the infamous "Phantom Foul" game I attended in the opening round of the region over there in '98 between the Hounds and Tigers. Some call it "The Manchester Miracle." I call it grand larceny. Corbin wins the game in regulation. But wait... as the Hounds begin to celebrate the hard fought win, , some felonious chap in black and white stripes , with his back pockets bulging from hundred dollar bills, donated to him at halftime, blows his whistle and assesses a phantom foul several seconds AFTER times runs out. Clay makes a free throw to tie the game and sent it to overtime, where they win by a point and eliminate the Hounds from regional tourney play.

Happened in the semifinals of the Mountain Classic in 1988. Clay Co. v. Buckhorn. Buckhorn was having one of its best seasons ever. Clay was the defending state champs and were 19-1(I believe) and #1 ranked coming into this game. The Tigers had just recently won the LIT. Clay led by more than 40 points with a little over two minutes remaining when the sh!t hit the fan. A backup guard by the name of Terry Gray was in the game for the Tigers. He averaged, maybe a couple of points a game. A Buckhorn player shoved him him the back. Gray shoved back, and a scuffle ensued. Benches cleared, fans ran onto the court(I was at home in my living room), and there was a big scrum on the court, with players and fans from both sides.
An off-duty state trooper by the name of Woods, I think, was attempting to restore order and get everyone off the court. After order had been restored, somewhat , Bob Keith, who was pissed that the off-duty cop had run onto the court , and was still hot about it, yelled at Woods. Woods took offense and forcibly arrested Keith on the spot for disorderly conduct and interfering with police action. Bob was taken immediately to the Knott County jail, where he remained until later that night. Keith's arraignment was Monday morning in Knott County. Prosecutors decided to drop the charges, thus ending the criminal matter.
Clay won the game by almost 50 points. Buckhorn went on to advance to the Sweet 16, where it played a good Cov. Holmes team down to the wire, earning the respect of fans all across the Bluegrass. The defending champ Tigers, advanced to the title game of the state tournament , where it was thwarted from becoming back-to-back champs, by Allan Houston and Ballard, losing 88-79 in OT. Richie scored 51 points in the title game loss to the Bruins. And now you know... THE REST OF THE STORY . ---OSH

The only thing that I would say was a little unjust was how davis can essentially tell an official hey it’s a charge about 2 seconds after the player hits the floor and get a super late whistle. Most refs bow down to him in this region, and that’s fine he coaches a way that benefits his team. He takes care of the officials during the offseason and all that, and when it comes down to him being on his knees begging for a call, he gets it. I don’t think that strategy works with strangers at the corbin arena.

I would say to all you 13th region gurus when you’re talking about top tier coaches need to open your eyes and see that the 2 Jones boys at HC and Clay can coach with ANYBODY in this region!!! They both have 13th region Titles and one of them already has a 2A State runner up finish and a run to the Championship game of the Greatest Show in Hoops (The Legendary Ky Sweet 16) So when you folks go talking about top tier coaches show a little respect to maybe the two best of them all, Mike and Kyle Jones and they learned all they know from a pretty darn great coach himself, Mike Sr…….3 pretty darn excellent coaches in the family!!! Hats off to the Jones’s!!!

Why did the former Coach Jones of Harlan County, now the current Coach Jones of Clay County , resign his position as Black Bear head man? We heard things over here. He had had success there. The Jones' boys have an excellent coaching pedigree. Their old man could flat coach but I never liked him. Just somethin', somethin' ... I'm not ranking any of them in my top three. Never will. I've had Davis #1 for the longest time. His teams don't always play the most exciting brand of ball but he flat knows how to beat you. I do think it's ridiculous how he can get right in the face and berate an official without getting a technical, though. He's got the stripes on a leash. He can even make them sit up and beg.

Hats off to the Jones’s!!!I think for one to say they are a great coach, they win when they aren’t supposed to. Brad Sizemore has done it, Jeff Davis has done it a lot, as crazy as it sounds so has Coach P. Mike Jones has to an extent. I know two times he lost when he should’ve won in round 1 of the district. I know the year before they won the region they should have beat clay in the semis. People do not need to forget how good cameron carmichael was but he will be overshadowed by the talent the last few years. I do believe mike jones is a heck of a coach, but he’s not cracking the top 4.
I include his brother in the top 4, kinda hard not to. The only thing I can say about Kyle Jones that may be negative is he has had a little more sugar than everyone else. In my own personal opinion, the last two seasons he has had the real mr basketball… Kinda hard to lose when you have both on the same team. If he wins the region this year, it’s dang near impossible to say he isn’t right in the mix of the top 2 coaches.

I'm not sure anyone can answer your question accurately. We "heard things" here, too but nothing was proven. So at best, the reasons would be a projection of gossip and what people "thought" might have happened.
As far as the "somethin'" that big Mike Jones has, you should understand that better than anyone.
