13th Region New Rankings
#31
As of this week, I think the rankings would go
1.HC
2. Bell
3. Corbin
4. North
5. Clay
6. South

South losing the only double digit scorer other than mabe has shown to hurt, and before then they were not untouchable. Nobody in the KHSAA outside of maybe 2-3 guys at the best schools are better than Maddox Huff at this point. The teams that beat Harlan Co have to be good enough to stop Cottrell and Carter. If you hold them to single digits they lose. However that means you to have a good defensive big and guard outside of who’s guarding Huff. Bell is 16-2 with Blake Burnett on the floor with two 3 pt losses to top 15 teams in the state. They are for real contenders. Corbin, Clay, and North have continued to show they can beat anyone on the floor with them.

Yes, Harlan County is looking good.

I love Gridiron's analysis of 13th region ball. He's good. And I love his Bell County team. But rating South 6th, behind a North team they've beaten twice by an average of a dozen, per, is kinda crazy. Jeff Davis can coach circles around Mr. Valentine. I wouldn't put much stock in North's 15-point win over an inconsistent and mediocre Clay County team. I'd still put South above those two.

Just wondering, why do you have so much love for Mr. Valentine?  After all, he does have a day named after him, it's coming up soon.

I have very little love for Mr. Valentine. He kinda sucks!!! If Jeff Davis or Pietrowski had had Reed , Reed's cousin, and the other parts around them, they would have won state, at least once.

Are you saying BGR is lame???   There are many on here that eclipse me by three or four times that.   Doesn't change the fact Davis is a much better coach than Valentine, who couldn't even win with Sheppard and his cousin.

Who’s hosting each of the 4 district tournaments?

Good question , ned.  I'd like to know that, as well. I don't remember who hosted last year.

Harlan hosts 52nd. I think Jackson County in the 49th.

No, neither one would have the state.  The missing piece was a big kid, and Valentine knew that when he went after Noah.

Why couldn't he keep Noah?  Or did Noah never have any real intention on playing for North?

I'm just assuming he didn't have enough basketballs to go around.  Noah played summer ball with NL and then went back to Harlan County.  Then V went and got the Chadwell kid from Knox Central, he played the one season with NL and returned to Knox Central for his senior year.

I would put south right back above them and probably 3A with Corbin if not for the loss of Steele. He was really the main offensive threat outside of Mabe. 11 PPG in a Davis system is 20 in most others just on pace of play and the amount of time they sub in and out. Not only could he score, he could guard and he was very long and could elevate. He was a great player and it was a shame what a freak accident that was. But you have to take it into account when saying who is the best teams. When you take out steele and replace  him with howard or brown, you aren’t going to get the same production outside of just hustle. Maybe they can replace by committee but it’s just more stress on mabe, and he was already getting doubled if not tripled when he crossed half court. That’s the reason I moved them so low.

Just flipped 1 and 2. For the first time… since 2010, I have my Bobcats first in the 13th Region.

I haven't really followed basketball much this year. I know Huff has been great but how has the Cottrell kid been after his injury this past summer. I'm just glad to see him back. I know he lost some fingers. Has that affected his game? I know it has to have to a degree but wondering how much. I know one thing though. Even if it did affect his game some, it didn't change his heart. Love watching that kid play. He has a relentless motor.

Idk if they are #1 that was only their 2nd win vs a team with a winning record

All very good points. I actually didn't realize Steele got hurt. What happened to him?  Davis is a very good coach. I'm sure he will come up with a plan. Wouldn't surprise me  if they still beat Corbin in London on Friday. As long as they have Mabe they still have a shot at winning three games in the region. He can carry them for a stretch of three.

I like Bell’s team. Blake is playing great, Buell is a stud and i stand by Cameron Hall being the most underrated player in the region. Bell is more athletic than HC. I think they also shoot the ball a little better overall. Maddox Huff just propels HC to new heights when he is playing out of his mind which is usually. I honestly think if you played this game 10 times it could easily be a 5-5 draw. Some breaking news. Evan Ellis WILL be eligible for Corbin on Feb 5th. Thats the North Laurel game. This makes corbin a region favorite in my opinion. I saw him play a lot last year. He has sat so long i think people forget what a dynamic shooter and scorer he is. Whitley wanted to penalize the kid as much as possible. Since superintendent John Siler knows folks at khsaa, they made him sit the maximum. Bush league tactics by whitley. They will always be perennial losers because of stuff like this. Mark my words, look out for the corbin redhounds.

Steele got undercut while in air. Fractured several bones in his back. Health wise he will be fine but the basketball wise he is finished. South has zero chance to beat Corbin.

One of the crazier HS sports injuries I have witnessed. I know I had never even thought about a player breaking his back going up for a layup. Prayers are definitely with him across the state, such a sad way for your career to end.

I disagree.  Zero is a very small number.  Corbin usually struggles in London. I say South by double digits. Hope you're right and I'm wrong.

Yes Zero is a very small number but South doesn't match up well with Corbin and although there is no answer in the 13th for Mabe he has very little help. It will be a physical game as it was in Corbin and I don't see a SL win unless the officials call a lot of fouls that they haven't so far this year..... Its not quite Absolute Zero but less than 1 lol.

Funny things happen in that den of iniquity in South London. You know, like three technicals and a coach ejected even before the game begins.

I forgot about technical gate. That dunking rule has to be one of the most lame rules in high school sports. Who care's if a player dunks in front of a ref. Isn't that what all the T's were for?

Yep, the officials will always blow the whistles several times when they enter the gym but Corbin either didn't know the rule or didn't hear. It is a awful rule that should be done away with.

1.HC
2. Bell
3. Corbin
4. North
5. Clay

Just flipped 1 and 2. For the first time… since 2010, I have my Bobcats first in the 13th Region.
They deserve top billing. I like your team a lot.
I think Bell has a good chance to win the 13th this season. Seems to be a complete team. Had the chance to watch them a couple times this season. Will be tough but they have a legit chance.
