I've heard that Montgomery just got their PG Reed eligible to play plus Mont has one of the few players who can look Mabe eye to eye, so that one could be a slobberknocker. I like Bell but I don't like their chances against GRC. Cook has another really good team their with Ashford and Gay. I would have liked to have seen these games reversed just for competatives sake.

It would probably be better games although South may play Mont co close. Tyce Jarvis is the D1 soph kid for mont co. It will be interesting to see him meet mabe on drives to the bucket. Saw him in the summer and he is more gifted athletically than anyone in the 13th. If bell has burnett back it would make it a more interesting game with GRC but i could see them getting blown out. Ashford and montez gay are supposedly two D1 kids also. Bell lost to the team corbin is playing. I heard akins may be out with an injury.

Mont is one of the few teams that can match South with size but personally I don't think they will react well with Davis defense and the grind it out offense--in other words they will get into foul trouble. South by 10. If Burnett is back it will make things interesting but worse case scenario GRC by 15--they go 10 deep and even if you get the typical 13th region home cooked officiating it won't matter. Not familiar with who Corbin is playing but I hate when any kid is injured.

Bell had burnett back last night when they played middlesboro, looked good after a few minutes to adjust. They should be healthy tonight. Corbin beat TCC by about 10 can’t remember the final. Bell lost to them last week by 3 without burnett who’s about a 15 pt difference regardless of opponent. GRC still should most likely win but at least it will be close now and should be a game.

South nearly doubled up the #2 team in the 10th. Lot of game to go though

GRC 56-52. Come down to the last possession and bell coaches got to worried about yelling at the refs in the last minute than coaching, bad call or not coach the dang game. Bell gets the wonder boy crew of Darrel, who you know if you play in the 13th, and a Corbin football coach as a ref… and once again gets the rough whistle on their own floor. Regardless you have to win that game in the late stretches and can’t rely on getting bailed out. They will improve playing teams like this, but it’s undeniable Bell is a different team especially on defense with burnett on the floor. Didn’t have to score much and made an impact everywhere else. When he’s 100 percent Bell is right there with Harlan County, Corbin and North hoping South has a bad night in march.

I thought corbin, south and bell co all three played well. Mabe was a man child for south. He dominated the jarvis kid who i was told was the best soph in ky. I thought mabe basically demoralized that kid. He is such a smart player. I feel like mabe having to play so much point takes away from other things he could for south. But he has to due to there lack of PG. Blake burnett looked a step slow. Maybe he played hurt? #12 for GRC blocked him at least 6-7 times. Mont co and GRC are the two best teams in that region. The Tri Cities team was also a good test for corbin. Once again i thought ryder akins looked very good. 24 pts, 8 rebs. He also had a nice break away dunk. That kid has unbelievable athleticism. Also, Eli Pietrowski had 18. Middleton 14. That team beat bell already(without burnett i believe). Everyone on bell 1-7 can shoot. Also that 8th grader Ferguson for bell impressed me.

I think today showed a lot of people in the 13th what to expect come the next few weeks. Both strengths and weaknesses. Mabe is the best player in this region period, but montgomery showed some weaknesses on the perimeter and getting to the rim if it’s not mabe. Corbin can beat and bang inside with the best of them, out rebounding them will be tough. Adkins can ball. Corbin has a weakness guarding on the perimeter. Bell can get hot and beat anyone, or go cold and lose to anyone, but burnett at 50 percent put this team in a possession to go down to the last possession with a team who will be top 10 in the state this coming week in every poll. GRC rim protection was the game changer, it felt like every other shot in the paint for bell was blocked. Felt like a foreshadowing for when Mabe is down there in march.
Oddly enough, these three teams and then Harlan County have strengths and weaknesses that matchup bad for eachother. South is a bad matchup for both Bell and Harlan County with mabe. Corbin can be a bad matchup for south with adkins. Bell and Harlan County can be bad matchups for corbin with their perimeter scoring. North on paper has the matchups for all of them to an extent, but really i can see north losing to every team mentioned one night and beating them the next. Should be an another exciting season in the 13th!

In the 13th region it seems to always come down to everyone wanting to blame the refs. Darrell catches a lot of grief from every direction but he’s apparently at the top of a bunch of coaches lists or he wouldn’t have all their important games. The officials in the 13th probably have it worse than anywhere in the state if you watch the way several coaches cry and berate them for every call they make. Yelling at and blaming refs doesn’t seem to be as big a thing in other regions.

Darrell Wilson started officiating way back when I coached basketball. It was the last season of my career and the first season of his.
You gotta learn his officiating procedures; calls he loves and calls he'll never make.

Great day of basketball for sure. Thought the Owsley transfer would have been more of a difference maker for the Indians. Great second half game though.

There is NFHS rules and then there are Darrell rules.

Why, when there is 10 plus games on a friday night in football or basketball, there is not enough 13th officials to cover all of them and they do not want to be apart of any statewide official organization or union which is an entire different argument. That means they have to get anyone they can from anywhere they can, and if they have to poach an official from the 12th or somewhere else, they don’t want to make them drive to Pineville when they could just go to london or whitley. Means you get middlesboro, harlan, and knox guys at 95 percent of games at bell high especially on a friday or saturday where there’s too many games to cover.(12-14-2024, 10:11 PM)Gridiron_Raid Wrote: GRC 56-52. Still not an excuse you gotta win the game when you have the ball up 4 with 2 minutes to go.

And yes he locked up the Jarvis kid who has multiple D1 offers but how many has he locked up last year and in a couple games this year? Outside of Sheppard he is the most dominant defensive player the mountains has had in while, but he guards every position 1-5. And unfortunately he has to play the PG position too much but that creates some definitate missmatches. In my opinion unless something happens to Mabe or the refs get in the way South is gonna be a monster in the 13th. Be interesting to see how they do against Trinity at the KOB this coming week. But that game definitely exposed some weaknesses and has to give hope to the rest of the region.
