1A Playoffs
#1
We still have the outcomes of this weeks match ups to decide the final factors, and someone please chime in here as I am just now kind of getting a grasp on how things will or should shake out. I’m just looking at the East because I only see Cville or KCD coming out of the west.

I’m chalking the first two rounds. Leaving the following teams

Pikeville, Raceland, Hazard, Sayre

From what I can tell, and someone please correct me if I am wrong. BUT…if Hazard beats Clay Co then the 3rd round would be

Pikeville at Sayre
Hazard at Raceland

If Hazard loses to Clay Co

Pikeville at Raceland
Hazard at Sayre

I don’t see Pikeville losing to Boyd Co and I don’t expect Raceland to beat LCA. So I haven’t even weighed the option of how that could change the make up of it all.

This is all out of curiosity for me. I stated at the beginning of the year that if the Rams made a regional final appearance I’d call the season a success. Anything beyond that is gravy for me. We have already surpassed my expectations and it has zero to do with wins or losses. I’m just really interested to see if someone can definitively say what the match ups would be in the regional round

As the RPI stands right now 3rd Round would be 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.
So here is the top 4 you have coming out of the East, if I'm not mistaken wouldn't that put Sayre and Pikeville playing each other and then Raceland and Hazard? I may be missing something but this is what Im seeing unless RPI changes after this week using the teams you have as moving on.
#3
Yes. That’s what I came up with as it stands right now. I dug around a little and looked how teams moved around last year based on some wins, losses, etc. and I do NOT believe this is locked in and can change regardless of who wins or loses the Raceland, Pikeville, and Hazard games. Whoever wins the East will have a much tougher go in the regionals than the West.

So in what world does Hazard play to win vs Clay Co?

I expect a blowout but this could give a little insight into Sayre if it’s close or they lose. Game is at Bethlehem.

They have split each game 2-2. Sayre won convincingly last season, even though score doesn’t show it.

Why wouldn’t you play to win? I don’t see many coaches throwing games.

I still think the RPI comes down to a couple games. Raceland won’t drop much in my opinion. I think Hazard and Pikeville is so close to call.

Many expect those 4 listed above. Williamsburg could play spoiler.. Paris could play spoiler. It could happen.

Imagine if Paris upset Sayre, then your favorites win there games.

You’d have Raceland vs. Pikeville, then Hazard at Paris.

I think they will try to win this week just to continue their turnaround but Hazard isn’t guaranteed to win at Williamsburg in the 2nd round. If Pikeville beats Boyd and I still think that’s a big if and Williamsburg beats Hazard in the 2nd round, Pikeville would likely go to Raceland for round 3 because I think Pikeville will jump Williamsburg this last week in RPI with a win but again it will be close if Williamsburg beats Perry. If Hazard wins this week and round 2 game, they go to Raceland for round 3 and Pikeville would get Sayre. Race for #1 still up for grabs in the west also. If Campbellsville wins, they will lock up the 1 seed but if they lose and KCD wins, KCD will be the overall 1 seed. That could place Raceland at Campbellsville and Pikeville at KCD in semifinals if favorites win and no upsets. This last week has a bunch of possibilities.

My comment was more about how the RPI is just a flawed way of setting playoff matchups and that a team “could” benefit from a loss to get a better matchup.

Hazard got ran off the field vs Raceland in about 14 minutes of game clock so I’m sure they would welcome a trip to Sayre over Worthington. I still say they play to win and work it one game at a time. Can’t overlook anyone.

As I’ve said before. Hazard is not a bad team and that game was an anomaly. Everything that could go wrong in that game did for hazard.

Don't see Hazard throwing the game. Everything Chandler has been building to turn around program would seem hollow if he didn't play to win every game no matter the location or opponent.
#10
All I know is that it’s a two team race and we all know who they are.
#11
We have seen several times when a team smacked an opponent in the regular season just to lose the playoff matchup.

Here are just a few examples that come to mind:

2020
Regular season
Pikeville 43 Hazard 7

Playoffs
Hazard 21 Pikeville 12

2014
Regular Season
Pikeville 62 Paintsville 8

Playoffs
Paintsville 30 Pikeville 6

2012
Regular season
Raceland 54 Pikeville 12

Playoffs
Pikeville 26 Raceland 20

If Raceland plays Hazard in the playoffs that first game needs to be taken with a grain of salt as history has shown the regular season blowout games don’t mean it will happen again.
#12
You can also add 2006

Hazard lost 42-6 regular season at Pikeville.

Hazard won the playoff game 15-14 at Pikeville.
#13
Add 2017
Hazard 38 Pikeville 26
Playoffs Pikeville 14 Hazard 9
#14
Don't think anything will be considered an upset in Class A this year from the third round on.
#15
That’s 100%. I think the top 5 or 6 teams have shown they can rise to the occasion at any time but the wheels could completely fall off at any point as well lol. Tbh, early on I thought 1A was on the rise, but I think the top has taken a step back and made things a little more competitive. Either way I’m fine with it. As long as competition keeps getting better that’s all that matters.
#16
I would still be surprised by anything other than one result.

Is there any chance there isn’t atleast 1 forfeit for round 1?

As of now they said they were coming

According the KHSAA website Sayre plays at Fairview in the first round. This to be a mistake since Sayre is much higher in RPI. If indeed Sayre ends up having to travel imo that destroys the legitimacy of the RPI system.

RPI doesn’t come into play until round 3. Pairings are based on district standing the first 2 rounds. Sayre is the 1 seed and Fairview is the 4. Sayre will be at home at least for the first 2 rounds of the playoffs. Actually as #2 in RPI, Sayre will be at home every game they play unless they meet up with KCD prior to the championship which I don’t know if that is even possible.
#22
I knew Sayre is supposed to be home at least through 2 rounds. I was just confused as to why the KHSAA page had them traveling in round 1.

Will be the closest playoffs in 1a in a long time. I look for someone not named Pikeville to win state this year. Part of me hopes it's Raceland so their fans don't look so silly on this message board year in year out. Pikeville is battle tested but did not dominate the teams everyone thought they would.

And yet, no one in class A beat them. Pikeville will be the favorite in every game they play in the playoffs even on the road. Feel free to check calpreps or massey whichever you prefer. I really think Raceland is the only team with a shot but if Pikeville shows up healthy, they can’t win either.

Pikeville will Win their 4th Title in a row. After seeing the wrinkles they've added to the playbook last night I'm more than sure of it.

That will be interesting to see no matter what round it happens in. It was 16-13 with everybody healthy

Anthony wasn't healthy, only had 3 carries.
But 82 yards. What's Raceland going to do when he has 25 carries?
#30
And without 2 bad turnovers the game was on the verge of running clock.
