Press Box/ Radio Etiquette
#1
I have debated on posting this but we had a situation happen past Friday and I believe it’s something that should be addressed publicly. The situation was that the opposing teams radio announcer was trying to control the press box and talk so loud that no one else could hardly talk and not only that but it also came across on the home radio feed. Secondly, he bashed the people of the home team and made them sound like they are dumb hillbillies. He said things like “I expect nothing less than people from here.” He also said on air “now they are attacking me, go figure!”

There should always be etiquette and respect for home team, the privilege of being allowed in the press box. I have never been disrespectful towards any teams people of that certain community and this guy was very rude and obnoxious. I personally didn’t say anything towards him but others tried to calm him down and talk to him calmly. What are your thoughts? I would sincerely like to hear what others think.

Should've been removed from the box.

I agree! HC's commentators wasn't even allowed to use the press box on Friday. They had to stand up in the bleachers and broadcast.

Not many people have manners these days

AD should’ve dipped his hind den out the box and let him broadcast standing up outside
If you need any assistance or want to report a problem feel free to PM me and we will get it taken care of!  Thank you for choosing to be apart of the BGR community!

I agree 100%, I was listening to the game and could hear that guy's comments. Very annoying and I could tell that it was affecting you guys trying to do your job. I greatly appreciate being able to listen to my Dawg family from a few states away. Keep up the great work.

I was on my way back from ashland and was listening to it before I showed up to the second half!!!
I could hear him the whole time in the background!!! Running his mouth while he was loud and arrogant is all I heard!!! I'm glad a few people stood up to him. The press box is big enough for 2 different teams to fit in, and with everyone crammed in there, they need to understand that other people are on the mic also

Did that in a game in 1983.  Danville vs Estill County in Irvine.  It was the night I fell in love with Ale 8-1.  Must have drunk 12 of those during the hot game and it was the only free beverage for the broadcasters.

Maybe I am missing something but what team are we talking about I have been trying to figure out by reading the posts but I don’t know

I had some interesting episodes when I was doing games in the '80's.

Did a Boyle vs Mercer County on TOP of the BOX with no railing.

Washington County one year. Around '87 or so. Some big loud mouth for the Commanders wanted to run down the Rebels and bragged about the Smith Brothers. He didn't like it when I told him I was 2-1 vs Jeff and Larry Smith so don't think that holds water.

Somerset vs Boyle, playoffs in '84. Boyle won their sub district but only had a 3-7 record. Somerset was unbeaten and ranked #1 in AA. They had a very good squad. But Boyle outplayed them and took a 10-7 lead into the 4th quarter and the wheels came off for the Rebels. The Jumpers talent took over and Boyle's mistakes sealed the death. It got out of hand late and ballooned to 38-10. Some old goober beside my broadcasting section began trash talking the Rebels and I was still young and took it personally. At the after TD timeout I walked over to him and asked why I didn't hear any of that bold talk before now. These kids had just played well above their heads and were just out talented at the end. But they deserve better than his bravado.

Danville vs Henry Clay in '83. Some goober didn't like the Ads upsetting the Devils 17-0 and got really upset and turned to my crowd mic and cussed me and the Ads out. I was ticked but my partner (who was built like Mr. T) shook his head don't. He then potted down for commercial and leaned over telling the guy, "Why don't you stick around after the game and have a talk with me about those last words." When he saw my partner for the first time his eyes grew big and he was gone before the final horn.

Those were ones your post reminded me of right away.

OP is a Lawrence County guy.
I am presuming this would be Rowan County since that is who they played Friday.

It really doesn't matter, press box respect is a must in today's world.
The person was a Rowan County Broadcaster/commentator from what I heard on the radio.
I was really too focused on the game, although you could hear the guy over all other people in the press box (while I was listening to a different radio station ofcourse)

The first Ale 8 I had was probably in early 1980's Mt. Sterling. I had some for lunch today Smile

Radio etiquette, like message board etiquette,  should always be adhered to. That's why I always try my utmost to be kind,  respectful,  thoughtful , humble and well-mannered, at all times, when conversing with others. Brash, trash-talking people irritate to the core of my being.

2015 paintsville at Fairview Mr. BITW got a 15 yard penalty for running his mouth to head official. All from his seat in the press box. Way out of line and was demoted for some time. I think he's made his way back to the nest somehow. But yeah seen it happen for sure

HC's game was at Middlesboro.

Granny B. , my love, I must ask you for the second time in a week. Are you laughing with me or at me???

With you making that remark, I was sure I was laughing WITH you!

That was a joke, wasn't it?

This did take place at the Lawrence vs Rowan County game and unfortunately it could be heard through our broadcast. People need to learn that those press box places are not a right, but a privilege and can be removed.

that’s really not surprising playing Baseball back in the 80’s and going to college and playing baseball I remember playing Summer legion ball and people from Rowan co and Boyd co always though they were superior to people from the mountains. I got more hate and disrespect from morehead and Ashland people than from anyone else in the way they talked about eastern Kentucky people. They don’t take kindly to getting their ass kicked bu a bunch of hill jacks ?

I’ve had some interesting times in press boxes over the years.

As a visitor, I realize that sometimes you just get whatever is available. Clay County once stuck us right in front of a PA speaker and I doubt you heard a single thing we said all night. That was during the COVID year and it was pretty much understood everyone was going to be outside every week.

I was sitting in the press box in Paintsville next to one of my broadcaster friends from another outlet once and was waiting for my color guy until he called me and the AD told him there wasn’t enough room in the press box and they had set us up a table next to the field! It was a last second goal-line situation about 60 yards from where we were to end the game.

All that being said, in general, the quality of broadcasters across the state has declined. I understand not every station wants their guys to call it right down the middle, but what some outlets consider acceptable to say about players, referees and fans is just plain awful. If someone is being a jerk in the press box I would stick them outside.

I’ve done games consistently at Perry, Hazard and Leslie and only had a couple crews really come in and act unprofessional but nothing crazy. We’ve had a few “surprise” radio crews that show up at the last minute and need space, power, internet, etc. Those folks should also get stuck outside or on top of the box.

Should have kicked the visiting announcer out of the press box after a warning. End of story

Yes,  I was joking. Big Grin   I knew when I wrote that I knew my good friend, Granny Bear,  would get a good laugh. And I was right!

As far as the radio guy in question, it's not a very good reflection on his community or school when he acts like that. Someone needs to reach him some etiquette.

As a radio commentator myself, I am appalled that people act that way. I would hope that, at the very least, he would not be allowed back.

I have mostly been treated with grace and respect. There was a time at a game where we were forced to do the broadcast from the stands, in a rain storm.

People seem to be so desensitized to good manners anymore, when I do see it, I am like someone
who knows how to treat people politely (it sticks out). It seems to be an anomaly to be a nice person
anymore. People speaking for a school should go the extra mile and be as polite and nice representing
that school as possible & that includes announcers for their football teams. Come on announcers do
better! For those of you who are the 'GOOD GUY ANNOUNCERS', keep on keeping on!

Schools need to get their act together and get 21st century pressboxes. 80% of the state has fat turds for pressboxes, event some of these new stadiums have trash pressboxes, get with the times.
