Corbin 22 Pikeville 7
#31
Both teams were very average in my opinion. The fan atmosphere on both sides was below average. Corbin had way too many penalties and played very undisciplined football. Pikeville is one dimensional with the running back being their only offensive weapon. Corbin should have dominated this game by a large margin. If their the third best team in 4 A go ahead and pencil Boyle County state champions.

There was a lot of talent on the field. Those kids on both teams play hard and definitely missed opportunities on both sides. They'll both learn a lot from the game. I expect good seasons out of both.

I agree …… the fine folks at historic Campbell field have come a longgggggggg way from the days of the “naked commode” to the finest restrooms in Ky high school football. The facilities and hospitality were top notch.

If Corbin has their full team this game gets out of hand before the half imo. I predicted corbin by 14 thinking meadows and brown would play. Well they didn’t as we all know and it really wasn’t as competitive as the score suggested at the end of the 4th. Very easily could of been a 28-7 game if it wasn’t for the wide open drop in the first half that would of made it 21-0 corbin. However in saying that i was still very impressed woth pikeville. Btw they have a new best Linebacker and its not anthony. 44 is scary to be a sophomore. Also i feel Hall is a decent replacement for boykins.

Corbin definitely dropped a walk in score but Pikeville overthrew an easy TD with 4 minutes to go when it looked like Corbin was gassed. Miscues both ways and neither played great. Turnovers were the difference. Corbin is better but it’s fairly close. I thought both would score more.

Yeah, this game very well could have gotten out of hand bigtime. Even as poorly as Corbin played, I could easily see them winning by 35 or 42 points, with their full complement of Mountaineers, one less dropped ball, and one less holding penalty on the 12 yard line. These teams were not even close to being evenly matched. That was obvious from the start.

Congratulations to the Redhounds!! Corbin is a first class program and I hope they have a fantastic season.

Not gonna lie I was kind of disappointed with Pikeville last night but playing on the road at Corbin is a very tough test especially for a Class A school.

I expect Pikeville will suffer a few more losses this season with their schedule but I'm still very confident they will steamroll Class A competition.

I think the jest of what I thought about this one has probably been well digested by now. Just a few more points:

1. The Redhound Varsity Club--- Folks, they are all about putting on a good show for outsiders. It's all about, "look at us." As far as what they've done for Corbin football, consider this: Prior to the formation of the Redhound Varsity Club, Corbin claimed five state titles, three real and two mythical. After the formation of the RVC, Corbin has won ZERO titles. NADA, ZIP, ZILCH. Corbin last won a title in 1982. Then the RVC was organized that same year. It's been a devastating drought since then. They put on a pretty show but they have been an unmitigated disaster for the Corbin football program. Too many people with their meddling hands in football matters that have no business being involved at all.

2. Coach Salmons--- I think he has a chance to build something good here, if the Varsity Club and other meddlers and sycophants will allow him to do so. He's a good coach. Leave him alone and let him do his thing. It's gonna take some time. Keep in mind that Greer left Corbin with no coach until June. Congrats to Coach Luke on win #1.

3. ELI's COMING--- Surprised no one has mentioned it but what about our new defensive lineman... Mr. Pietrowski ? Good to see that the new coach is open to trying new things and putting the best athletes on the field, whether it be offense, defense, or BOTH! Guys like Eli and Estep need to be on the field at all times. Same for all of your best athlete s. I expect to see Mr. Meadors and young Mr Brown on both sides of the ball, as well. They will both be a big help.

4. Again, the 7-minutes of paying homage to a lecherous traitor like Tom Greer is inexcusable. Anyone involved in that decision should be fired, barred from within 500 feet of the school or athletic fields, AND tar and feathered on the streets of downtown Corbin. Am I clear???

5. Young Salmons is gonna be a good one. Made some plays on defense. He'll shine as QB next season. Fine athlete.

6. Corbin is three or four scores better than Pikeville. Having said that, Corbin was incredibly sloppy and undisciplined. Salmons has a lot to talk about this week.

7. I thought the Pikeville coached lacked boldness in this one. Way too conservative(must have been talking to Jet this week) in playcalling and in decisions. I felt like there were times he should have gone for a first down and continuing a drive instead of punting. It seemed almost like he was playing to keep the game from being a blowout, rather than going all out to take the game from Corbin.

8. As far as the atmosphere in this one; well, Jesus wept and the crowd slept. Fans seemed to be bored to tears especially in the second half. I heard more food talk, fart jokes, and MAGA madness than I care to hear in lifetime. Few seemed interested in the football that was trying to be played. I guess everyone was spoiled by that scintillating Douglass game last season. They were expecting a game like the Fred Douglass game and got Fred Flintstone, instead.

9. Best of luck to both Corbin and Pikeville moving forward. We'll see much better from both of these teams as the season progresses.

10. I will say, the field itself is beautiful. I hope we see a state semifinal on that field some day.

And so it goes...

Still trying to find out- why could meadors and the other kid not get to play? Not enough practices or what? I was excited to see them last night. Added depth and athletes! Look for meadors to return kicks as well I’ve heard

I picked Corbin to win 35-20. Having said that, Corbin was so much better that some buttholes puckered in that stadium when that Pikeville receiver broke loose with 4 minutes to go on what would have been an easy TD and a 1 score game and the Hounds looked gassed. Nevertheless, that connection didn’t happen but you’re kidding yourself if you watched the game and thought this year’s Corbin is that far superior to Pikeville. I saw mistakes both ways but Pikeville had essentially 3 turnovers if you count the onside kick and the mighty Corbin offense mustered 2 scores all night. I think a poster earlier this week made fun of someone who predicted a final score of 14 for Corbin but 15 is what their offense gave them. Turnovers were the difference. Pikeville defense gave up some yards and missed too many tackles but kept Corbin out of the end zone. If I knew Corbin managed 2 scores on offense last night, I would have bet on Pikeville but credit to the Corbin defense with a slight nod to some conservative play calling by Pikeville. Both teams will benefit from that game.

Meadors will be electric. He's a fine return specialist and an outstanding defensive back. He has elite. sub 4.50/40 speed.  The Brown kid can also play both ways. Best known as a defensive end, he can also play TE, as well. Good athlete. Fine basketball player, too. They will be big additions.

Everyone is saying Pikeville was conservative. They threw a pick 6 and another Int when driving. Does everyone want 3 more TO's and let the game get out of hand? I'd trust the coaches who have won 3 straight titles. Wasn't Pikeville's night but they will continue to improve and be just fine.

I also picked 35-20 .  If they played on the same field next week with Meadors and Brown suiting up, I would pick 36-14, or maybe 42-14. I watched the game(well, except for the parts I slept through). Few who were there thought Pikeville had much of a chance from 10 minutes left in the 1Q til the final horn sounded. PIkeville will probably win a state title but they wouldn't come within two TDs in that game on that field 95 times out of 100.

I thought they were conservative in the sense that they didn't boldly go where some teams would have---namely, go for it on fourth down, instead of punting. There was more than one instance where they punted when they should have tried to extend the drive. You play to win the game, as Herm Edwards would say. The Pikeville coach seemed to play to keep it close. Having said that, he knows his team way better than I do.  Just not enough boldness from Pikeville last night.

OSH, you need to wander away from sitting in the sea of red occasionally to hear opinions from other people who also know football. Corbin is great. I think they have themselves a coach. He came with several assistants and scouted Pikeville in their first scrimmage of the preseason and it showed up. His team was prepared for some things the Panthers do. Corbin has a ton of talent all over the field. But the gap between those two schools wasn’t much despite how elite you perceive your favorite team to be. Corbin won by 2 scores when the turnover margin was 3. Saying they’d beat Pikeville by more than 2 scores 95/100 games is just not true no matter how much you want to believe that.

Still false. 2TDs, but you're getting warmer. You being a sore winner (against Pikeville and your own team) is the least surprising thing about this game.

Two plays early which really changed the trajectory of the game to me was Corbin’s first drive, Pikeville has them 4th and long and they hit a 40+ yard TD pass
Then Pikeville’s ensuing drive, they convert a 4th and short only to get a holding call which put them back to a 4th and about 12-13.
If Pikeville answers and scores there it would’ve been a nice confidence boost.
Overall though I felt Corbin was the better team by a couple scores, which is by no means shameful. It felt like their athletes were just a little quicker and a little faster than Pikeville’s. Also Corbin’s depth upfront wore on Pikeville , but I felt like Pikeville’s front held up pretty well. The bubble to Estep was virtually unstoppable for anything less than 7 or 8 yards, that kid is quick in space.
Once again this was a great first game for both teams and today they are both better for having played it.
Also the Beechwood/Pulaski game was a dandy too, I was expecting an easier win for the Beechies but get a win is a win.
Corbin’s facilities are top notch.
