Anyone have any kind of details on the game?

Lol listen I could care less about Ashland. Saying that the kids came out and took it to Boyd. Who’s Boyd gonna blame for this one.

Ashland beat three solid teams and seems to be peaking at the right time. Boyd has played well this season but really struggled in all three games at Morehead. Sometimes it's just all about the timing...

Congrats to Ashland on a well earned Regional Championship. They are playing great basketball right now and I believe it has to do with the quality of the schedule. They played the best schedule in the 16th region and even thou they lost some games during the regular season they stayed together and were prepared for the moment.
Ashland's program is in good hands moving forward. Best of luck at Rupp.

At last, the end of the Jason Mays story. I’ve been wondering how this one would end.
Boyd should win next year, but word is Russell is loading up. Wonder if Randy Anderson will survive.

Yes .... Boyd County has some very talented underclassmen and should be a favorite the next couple year. And I also have heard Russell will be taking over Mays' activities.

I thought this season was supposed to start Boyd County's reign of dominance? Maybe Jerry should shop his kid around again, maybe Bonner will record the call and we can start the whole thing over again. There's still quite a bit of talent left on the roster at Ashland.
Russell can add all the talent they want. It's all for naught if you don't have a coach that can do something with it.

Just watched a video where Jerry Spurlock was escorted from the Ashland bench after the game last night by the sheriff’s dept. He was pointing at Campbell and seemed to have an issue with Ashlands coaching staff. He has proven to be the biggest cancer within Boyd’s basketball Program.

Ashland vs Owensboro should be worth the drive to Lexington to see in person.

He told spurlock F$&! Off. I watched Campbell run off from where Howard and Conway were all standing when he saw spurlock walk across the floor. So he must have know he was going to be confronted by his choice of words. It had nothing to do with the coaches or the players. However, i watched all that unfold. Embarrassingly enough our principal lead the kids to chant his name only to get his attention to curse at him?! That’s why he went to confront Campbell. Mr Campbell needs to go! He has been on thin ice more than once as the principal. Poor leadership.

You are the most anti-Ashland individual who supposedly has a son on the team that one could imagine. Enjoy your trip to Rupp. Your team thoroughly embarrassed a group who hates your guts more than you can possibly imagine, no matter what they might say to your face. Actions speak louder than words. The guy was understandably upset. He miscalculated and made a very bad decision. He should have heeded Jason Mays’ advice and just enrolled his son at Ashland. He chose to stay in Randy Anderson’s “circle of love” instead. Anderson may bring a lot of love to Boyd County, but he doesn’t bring a lot of winning. 1 regional title in 13 seasons and that was on the back of a senior transfer from Fairland who was the region MVP.
Mays lapped the competition with regards to high school coaches in this area. It wasn’t because of recruiting. It was because of the culture he brought to the Ashland program which Bonner carried on. Schools would be fools to not go after Mays to lead their program. For example, put Mays with the talent Russell is supposedly getting ready to get and they go on a winning run just like Ashland has. Put Mays with Boyd’s group and they win hands down. The guy is an elite high school coach who pours his heart into the job. Everything he said to Spurlock on the recorded call turned out to be truth.
Coaches matter a lot at the high school level.

Baller, you keep saying in your posts “he (Mays) brought in player after player…” , as if that was the only way Mays could win in his 4 years at Ashland. That’s BS and you know it. Only 3 players played meaningful minutes for Mays that transferred to Ashland while he was there, Porter, Carter and Marcum. Three!!! That’s it. In 4 years. And Marcum played just one year. The first year he won the region with no transfers.
And as far as the 3 transfers, they were not “brought in”. Porter came because his dad wanted him to play with his AAU teammate Cole Villers. He wasn’t recruited. And Carter came on his own as well. I’m not sure about Marcum but one of his parents was a doctor and worked some at the hospital.
Which brings me to another point, Baller. If you think all the yearly transfers throughout Kentucky just show up on the doorsteps of schools without the parents at least talking to the coaches in some form you are in denial. There is usually always a parental decision and they want to talk to someone before they change schools and whether you are aware of it or not (evidently not or you’re extremely naive) they usually contact the coach in advance and introduce themselves and ask a few questions. That’s just the way it is and has been for years. And if I had a kid who had potential I would want him to play for Mays too. His former players are having successes in college. Porter, for example, was just named to the ASUN all tournament team and directed Liberty to within 1 point of playing in the NCAA tournament, all this as a freshman who actually had one more year of eligibility at Ashland. Mays convinced him he was ready for the D1 game and told him he should leave early. He didn’t want to at first but finally chose to do so. That’s how much Mays cares about the kids.
And Bonner has done a great job continuing that success! He’s a super nice guy, great coach and will continue Ashland’s traditions and community spirit.
And Mays will be just fine. He will soon coach again and some school is going to be darn lucky to nab him this spring.

I have truly missed our banter regarding Ashland basketball and Jason Mays. Your previous post is so full of outstanding statements, I'll pick out what I consider to be the top 5:
"He brought in player after player"
I agree that Mays went slightly too far. He should have left any recruiting conversations to the parents as most schools do. Winning is the end goal for EVERY high school program if it is attainable, though. When high schools find themselves on the losing side, they become sanctimonious. When transfers swing back in their direction, they provide a justifiable explanation.
"I think Campbell poking that bear about got himself in place with a man who seems not to put up with nonsense"
Not to put up with nonsense? Spurlock publicly proved he is the king of all nonsense. He secretly recorded a man and released the recording on the internet in an effort to get the man fired, get the program suspended, and get his son to Rupp Arena. Your desire to see Campbell get physically assaulted by Spurlock wouldn't have turned out like you wished. Your perception of Spurlock to be the biggest and baddest man in the arena hearkens back to the old days where men settled things by way of the fist. Perhaps Spurlock could make anyone in the Ashland section tap out, but we live in a very different age where actions like that don't always end up settled just by fists.
"Steve Carter and Adam Lalonde who are dads. Ran our practice while Bonner was in morehead for the regional draw. They both are in the locker room at halftime and are at every practice in the gym"
Now this is some fantastic stuff right here. As I recall, you were thrilled when Bonner was the hire, but he's now seemingly turned the program over to and opened up the locker room to 2 dads, one of whose son doesn't even play? This seems insane and implausible. You'd think if Lalonde is one of the de facto coaches of the team, he might manage to get his son some meaningful minutes. I take it from this comment that you are unhappy with Bonner's management of the team. How far must your son be down on the depth chart? I thought the riddance of Mays was the answer.
"We were fortunate that their best player was hurt during the regional tournament or it would have been 3-1"
There are winners and there are losers and there are excuses. Half the Boyd team was limping around as the game progressed. Their homer MyTown announcer was trying his best to provide reasons for the failure and focus on their "youth". If the East Carter player made a free throw, they wouldn't have even been there. If this...if that. They lost. By a lot. End of story.
"How are you gonna call yourself a man after running like that when you instigated the entire thing"
Surely in this day and age where everyone has their phone out at all times, someone captured this incident on video. At least provide the details on how it went down. Was Campbell in front of the student section leading cheers? Did he run down the tunnel to escape Spurlock? This has enough interesting backstory to go viral on a huge platform if this were the case. Make it so.
Make it so.

This was a great tournament for Ashland. They played with confidence from beginning to end in all three games. Boyd looked out of sorts in all three of their games. You could infer that after the first two games Boyd was physically and mentally drained. Maybe so, but the greater problem was they were not focused going into their first two games. They had a great draw going into the tournament and didn't take advantage.
On the other hand, Ashland had a very tough path. Russell had played consistent all year and was very motivated. Morgan County was considered by many to have an outside chance of going to Rupp. Ashland made quick work of both of these teams which made it much easier to physically and mentally focus for the next game.
Going into the championship one team was playing with confidence and had found their identity, the other could not focus and had lost their way. At the end of the day, like it or not, Ashland proved to be the best team in the 16th region. Period.
Also, I mean no disrespect to East Carter and Lewis County. They played great and I would not have been disappointed to see either of them win the tournament.

Go question that Ashland earned this Regional Championship. They were dominate in their three games.
Mays was very good at what he did. It may not have been the right thing to do but he was good at it. He broke the rules and was fired for it. That is why we have rules. All three of the kids mentioned above had private conversations with Mays before enrolling at Ashland. He basically admitted that in the phone recording by saying these conversations had to be kept quiet becasue they were not legal.
We will be repeating this same sequence in a couple years with another area school. Stay tuned.

I hope Mays gets another coaching job in the area. As you said, he was good at getting players. He was also great at building a positive culture, getting players to share the ball, and getting guys to work like they’d never worked before. He was also an excellent communicator and marketer for both the program and the players. Really as good as it gets as a high school coach. I realize he made some mistakes and I didn’t like some of the things he said. I’m sure he’s learned from them, though.
Since you seem to have some inside info, tell me what colors I need to purchase for my wardrobe because I for one am a Mays supporter.

Watch any of his productions. What he was doing is the worst thing a high school coach could do! The way he talked about his players disgusting to say the least. You said it best. You are a Mays supporter. Not ashland kids.(03-09-2023, 10:32 PM)The_Messenger Wrote: Go question that Ashland earned this Regional Championship. They were dominate in their three games.

16thregioner,
Everybody has their own opinion and if you are a “Mays fan” so be it. Some of us have issues with his morals and ethics while others do not. To each their own.
I have no inside information on his next landing spot but I believe he will get another job. I think the leadership at the high school level is at an all-time low so some administrator will hire him.
My comment about being in the same scenario in a couple more years is in reference to another area school starting to recruit kids into their program. They will get caught as well. They aren’t hiding it any better than Ashland did.
