In a recent Corbin-South Laurel game in London, Corbin was assessed multiple technicals for allegedly dunking during warmups while the officials were on the floor. Now, I know rules are rules, although this one is a mighty stupid one. STUPID !!! Why allow dunking when officials are not on the court but not when officials are present. I say just ban it at all times during warmups or else allow it at all times. Makes no sense, whatsoever. The KHSAA is weird.
Also, does the punishment fit the "crime" ? Corbin was assessed three technicals for dunking, resulting in a bunch of free throws for South before the game ever began. Okay, that's the rule. But Coach Pietrowski was ejected from the game AND had to serve a three-game suspension, in addition. That's four games that the coach couldn't be there on the bench with his team. FOUR GAMES because kids dunked during warmups. That's about 1/7 of the season. Does that seem excessive?
Just a weird rule with consequences that seem excessive to me. Also, I wonder how often this rule is actually enforced vs being overlooked. Seems like they stuck it hard to Corbin in South London.

I have never liked the rule, but the coach getting ejected and suspended is something that has to change. Do you really want to change that game that much and possibly throw out a whole season to the dogs over a dunk? or dunks? The rims and backboards that installed now can handle this. This rule shoud have went away and let any of the very few schools that have antiquated rims and backboards have it as a house rule if they are that concerned over it. These kids really like to show off their work in regame and it helps get the nerves settled. I really feel bad for that coach.

Didn't read the posts above, of all the things you need to focus on going into a game dunking is last.

That rule is out dated and old. It was established before break away rims to keep kids from possibly delaying a game from a broke back board. With breakaway rims, it's nearly impossible to break rims. The rule should be eliminated.

Also, there has been a lot of questions about this incident or if there was indeed an infraction. Just where were the stripes when they observed the dunks? Exactly when was Pietrowski informed about the technicals? How many dunks do the refs stand there and watch before calling the infraction? Eight or ten technicals before the ball is ever tipped?
It's hard to imagine Corbin's coaches not saying anything to the kids with the refs standing right there on the court(if they were, in fact, on the court. KHSAA is ridiculous. Also, having to pay $7 to download an app just to look at the rulebook. KHSAA--- what a sorry ship of fools.

Just. Don't. Dunk. In. Warmups. 99.9% of people who see someone dunk in warmups roll their eyes.

I've never been a fan of this rule. Seems a bit nonsensical that something like dunking is prohibited in the presence of the officials but permitted in their absence. I understand that goals might not have been as sturdy or affordable in the past, but I would think we're long past that point by now.
One of the last applications of the NCAA's rule against dunking in warm-ups benefitted Kentucky when a Kansas State player was given a technical prior to the tip of their 2014 NCAA Tournament game. The NCAA abolished the rule the following year.
Would be fine with seeing this game be the impetus to remove an antiquated item from the KHSAA's rulebook.

Dunks are entertaining. Who doesn’t like to see someone dunk a basketball? Lol

You can only get one technical for dunking before the game if I’m not mistaken. After the first one then you can dunk without consequences.

Maybe while the coach is suspended, he may want to figure out a way to teach his players to be disciplined and follow rules.
The rule is a NFHS rule not just KHSAA.

The 11th region refs actually blow their whistle as the enter the floor to alert teams they are on the floor and prevent this from happening. IF you go look at the tape the referees were talking to girls coaches and administrators in the corner and was not in the middle of the floor and this was in front of the student section. So they did not dunk while the referees were standing at half court. The rule should have been enforced but giving the coach 3 technicals and having to sit out 3 games was a little excessive. Should have been given one. The Refs could have handled it differently and been a little more professional about it.

Very weird rule but it’s been a rule for ever. never had to worry about it High School I’m the teams I played with lol. But I don’t mind the rule because everytime an athlete goes up for a dunk in warmups I’m always worried about basketballs rolling under ankles on a landing or other things like that happening. There’s a lot going on during pregame and people all over the place.

One of the important factors in kids playing games, is to allow the kids to function within a set of rules, even though they may not know why a certain rule exist. At the little league state tournament in Florida as the championship game was about to start, one of the teams bats was propped outside the dug out, the coach made a derogatory comment about the ref making a big deal out of the bat. The conversation escalated, as the ref explained the rule was there for players safety, and his job was to enforce the rules not to gauge whether he thinks they are valid, the coach rolled his eyes, made a smart comment as he turned away, and the coach was tossed. Every kid there learned a valuable lesson about following rules, and keeping your pie hole in check.

And it's not like they were standing at midcourt when the dunking was occurring. They were hid over on the side. More foolishness from that den of thieves in South London.

I think it's a horrible rule. Let the kids have fun and show out. You're only young once!

I think it's a stupid thing to complain about. Everyone knows it's a rule, don't do it.

No matter what your opinion may be considering the rules about dunking, the bottom line is that it's against the rules currently in place. And BOTH coaches knew that. I don't think it's a rule that SHOULD be in place and the KHSAA appears to pick and choose what rules to follow.
However, I bet for the remainder of the season, the Redhounds won't be dunking during warm ups.
If there are no consequences to breaking the rules, then why even have them in place. So if you don't agree with the consequences, change the rules.

Coach P. was back on the bench tonight at Whitley Co. for the first time since the dunking fiasco last Friday. P was some kinda fired up, and his troops responded. Corbin clinches the #1 seed in the 50th district.
I imagine Coach P thought about telling the KHSAA to "Dunk that !!!"

^^^Geeezzz just don't break the rules...you're not a victim all the time OSH even though that's what you're told by liberal TV...If the rules say don't dunk in warmups don't don't in warmups, don't break the rules and cry foul when the rules are enforced...it's not complicated good Lord, oh my bad you think we came from nothing...hope to see you in the music threads...

Dunking IS ALLOWED during warmups. Were the refs actually on the court or on the sidelines, hidden from view? Some region officials blow their whistles to announce their presence, just so something like this doesn't happen. There is no way Coach P , who is closing in on 500 games won, is gonna have his kids dunking with the refs standing there on the court. Again, dunking is allowed during warmups and most all HS teams have players dunking pre-game. If the refs haven't entered the court but are huddled up in a conversation off the court and hidden from view, has a violation occurred? Does anyone know what the letter of the rule states? I know it allows for dunking during pre-game warmups but just when does it become technicals and a suspension for the coach?

Exactly OSH.. That is my debate. I am not arguing the rule. I am curious as to when are the refs are actually considered "ON THE COURT?" They were all 3 huddled in the corner talking with a group of parents, asst coaches, and the same corner where SL has their student section. Very busy corner. They were NOT inside the court or at midcourt. So while they are laughing and joking with people in the corner of the gym they hear the rim pop and turn to look. Once they entered the court and in view of the players away from the busy student section corner there were no more dunks. With all that said: "when are the referees considered on the court?"
