So the Coach at greenup coached the player on an AAU team and then the kid transferred to Greenup? Or am I reading that wrong in the letter there?

The letter said the khsaa rules broken were Bylaw 6 section (3d), (3) and (4)

I think Either the assistant did or the head coach. It also stated that there is overwhelming evidence that there wasn't a bona fide change in residence with his entire family relocating with him.

This goes on far too often. Someone had to come to the KHSAA with prove and evidence for them to take action. I could name at least 10 kids that left schools and got a utility bill at a location in the new schools area but they are still living in their previous home.

This falls on admin and district for lack of oversight over athletics.

I agree, is anything going on with the AD? You figure he would have some type of knowledge or responsibilities to ensure players are eligible to play.
I also feel that both coaches are going to be let go, with the way the superintendent closes her letter to the coach.

So, it took 5 months to discover this violation?

That’s for that article

I just find it strange the last game of the season before the tourney starts next week they decided to get rid of the player and two coaches. KHSAA cleared them earlier in the season and then the Super decides to axe them playing in the post season which could be because of them having the tournaments wins vacated if they go on to win big things. But you’ve road with this kid all year and haven’t said a word but now it pops up the last game of the season. Makes no sense to me

I’ve been in a similar situation in high-school. I will bet anything this was brought to the attention of the board by a rival school. Awfully odd this close to Districts. Someone has called in a favor.

Has to be. Kids played all year and in the last game of the regular season on a Friday they shut the kid and the two coaches down? Somethings fishy there.

Read Amos statement. He says that the boy was eligible by KHSAA around October. He said the assistant coach wasn’t hired until 2 weeks later (after the boy was ruled eligible to play ball). The only thing “fishy” I see is Amos tried to do a sneak attack and it didn’t work. The boy had already got eligible then he “hires the coach” afterwards. Pretty slick if you ask me. Only problem is, the school should have reported it then (if they had known). And if they would have, the boy would have been made ineligible to play. From reading Amos statement and the letter from the SuperIntendent, this is exactly what KHSAA would have ruled had the information been sent to them as well. The school district is saving themselves before KHSAA had the opportunity to investigate it themselves ( which would have been greater repercussions ). I give Amos props for trying to sneak one in 🙄 but when all is said an done, it wasn’t the smartest plan. I’m thinking along the lines of another post...probably a rivalry team turned the info in close to District time. JMI.

So we have a situation where head coach probably says you get this kid here and eligible then you get a job on the staff? And tries to slide him in the backdoor after the kids ruled eligible by KHSAA so then they think they’re scot free? Pretty smart move if that is the situation.

Evidently the coach had coached the kid in some capacity in AAU and then the kid transferred to Greenup without moving residence.

So your telling me a High School kid is driving 3 plus hours every day to school?

The kid was living somewhere in Ashland.

Here is the quote from Amis on Matthew Sparks story.

“To the best of my knowledge, he was ruled eligible around middle of October,” Amis said. “My assistant coach wasn’t hired until two weeks after that. I had one assistant leave the program to coach the sixth-grade team at McKell Middle School to coach his son. Honesty, I have no idea where the kid lives. I know it was in Ashland because I saw the paperwork. He was ruled eligible by KHSAA. His address was confirmed not once, but twice by the Greenup County Director of Pupil Personnel.”

Here is statement from the Super. A neighboring district requested KHSAA look into it.

Let the kid play he's played the whole year

1. Can't hire a kids AAU coach.
2. Family didn't move.
#54
Other than hiring the kids AAU coach, how is this any different than what goes on regularly in the 14th region (and other mountain regions) ? Kid "moves" from wherever and lives with the coach, a "sponsor" or other person affiliated with the local high school team, and clearly (clearly) moves for basketball reasons, as they were recruited to go to ______school to play basketball. If KHSAA is going to come down on Greenup Co. player and rule him ineligible , then why aren't they doing it at the other schools who OBVIOUSLY recruit ???
#55
Would this result in vacating all of the games won that the ineligible player participated in?

Hiring an AAU coach alone is enough to get you declared ineligible. Bylaw 6.

Apparently the coach had been part of the staff since October, or before season; so, now the player is suspended because he is ineligible - right before postseason??? My point is there is nothing that has changed since October, so did KHSAA get recent information or a "tip" to look into that situation further? If they are only now acting on information they have had all year, then shame on the KHSAA; if they are acting on information that was just presented to them or they just became aware of, my question is why can't they act on the information that they receive about schools recruiting because it is no secret around the mountains which schools have kids they have actively recruited, one kid put on is instragram account before the season started he was "taking his talents to _________school" - lol

Greenup County Superintendent said a neighboring district requested the KHSAA look into the the kids eligibility.

The deal with these issues is that the khsaa is WILDLY inconsistent with their rulings.

IN one case, a kid never moves, gets caught and is allowed to play. This happened with University Heights and two Softball players several years ago. They were caught lying about the "new address" they used to get eligible BY the KHSAA but were allowed to play.

We all know of example after example of kids moving "on paper" and never having their eligibility questioned.

yet in this case, a kid moves 150 miles away and is suddenly ineligible because of an assistant coach?

But why are we trying to understand the khsaa.

After-all, they make things up as they go. Exhibit A? The non-existent "financial hardship" waiver they hand out to kids who transfer out of private schools and want to be eligible immediately.

A team hired an aau coach/dad and he brought his son over. Spent one year as an assistant and is now the head coach.. Let's not act like this hasn't happened...
