14th Region
#31
These posts sound kind of harsh. To follow up, I hope that Coach Crowe has time to do his full time job that pays the bills, campaign for clerk, spend time with his new grand baby, and put time in with the team. That’s many irons in the fire.

All will be well. The program is in great hands with coach Crowe. Do not skip a beat with the assistants either. This years Estill team will be just fine and compete for the Region yet again. Their record may not be great, because they schedule Madison Central, Clark, Montgomery and Lexington schools, but they will compete inside the 14th for sure.

Baseball practice doesn't "officially" start in Kentucky until Thursday, February 15th last time I checked. Hopefully the boys that aren't involved in winter sports are finding a place to hit and throw, and have conditioned/weight lifted in the off season.

Estill County has had a top 5 baseball program in the 14th region since they moved in 2005-2006. Always very competitive in the 14th region tournament winning it twice, and being runner-up twice. Not to mention extra inning, one run losses to the eventual regional champions in 2006, 2013, and 2015.

EngineerFan57 Wrote:Coaches are way underpaid for the time they put in for any sport. They do it for the love of the game and the kids. Estill has had a tradition of good baseball teams, but that takes time and effort to keep it going.

I would really like to know who you are, it says EngineerFan, but you down talk your home school? Coach Crowe is exactly the right man for the job and puts in work just as much as any other coach in the region from what I can tell. Baseball season has not officially begun yet. Not his fault he does not work in the school system and does not have the luxury of having the teacher schedule. But to say that there is no effort put in is ridiculous. Thanks and have a great day, bud.

You mean a PE teacher schedule right jumpshooter?

Buckhorn has another new coach, Richard Stidham. What's going over at the Horn for coach turnovers?

everyone is underestimating powell county. they re build fast and have a full team coming back this year. the bullpen is strong, and bats are hot as usual. to rank them below top 3 would be insane. i expect them to show out this year.

I would agree with these rankings. Any of the top 4 teams can win this region for sure. Estill and Powell will be in the Region tournament for sure, and unless Hazard and PCC draw each other in the district, I would suspect they both will be too. Should be an exciting year! GO BIG BLUE!

Leslie got smashed last night by Jackson County 16-1 in 5....Knott Central also lost to Magoffin County
#45
How did the Breathitt and Hazard game go? Does anybody know? I know Breathitt plays Perry tonight, tough first two games of the year for the Bobcats

19-0

Coach Crowe will be on the job just like he is ever year. They have not started practice yet. Estill is lucky to have Crowe as there coach.

As far as people underestimating Powell County, I think that will be good for Powell. They made a good hire that is local and an invested interest in the program succeeding. Granted, they are probably down compared to what they are use to. However, this isn’t the 7th region or the 10th region or even the 11th region. If they can throw strikes and play defense, then I think their new coach will find some creative ways to score runs. Sounds like everyone is bought in with the new coach and that can lead to success just based off of that variable alone. Now I do not believe there is any team in that region that can challenge PCC or Hazard for the region. However, if they draw each other, injury’s, or anything like that could certainly throw a wrench in the situation, but based on what it is, those two should have no issues besides each other.

I think Estill and Powell both could use this season as a platform to launch their programs into the future. A good showing in the regional tournament will be huge to the rebuilding process for both of these team, especially Powell, with having a new coach.

Keep sleeping on this Estill team. PCC and Hazard are too cocky and will throw off if either play Estill in the region. I CAN'T WAIT. I have been around Estill sports my whole life (over 40 years), and nothing in this county compares to the success that our baseball and softball teams have had. Coal money is vanishing in the mountains, so Perry and Hazard better enjoy a few more good years of success, then its a level playing field. Ask Knott and Letcher, they are already seeing the decline.

I'd venture to say that Coaches Meehan and Dixon are very well aware of how good Estill has historically been, they've coached against them since Estill entered the 14th. I guarantee neither one of them takes Estill lightly if they happen to meet up in the regional tournament.

There are teams in the region that no one ever underestimates. Estill, Powell, Letcher and Knott are probably rounding out the top 5 in this region after Hazard/Perry. Too many times teams like Estill have upset Perry and Hazard in the region tournament. Estill did it in 2012, Powell Did it in 2013. Both years, Hazard had the best team but both fell before making it to the championship game. Meehan and Dixon both know that these teams have talented guys. They may not throw their best, but they will definitely not throw off. There is a difference. In the regional tournament, if you're one of the best teams, you have to manipulate pitching in a way to make sure you leave yourself enough in the finals but at the same time you need to make sure you win the first two games.

Has either of those coaches ever thrown off like that before? I am sure with all the experience they have they know the teams they can do that to and who they can’t. I could be wrong about Estill. It’s baseb. They may win the state title.

Oh yeah, they throw off in anticipation of playing each other in the region final. It has came back to bite them before. Not saying they will, but they always
seem over look anyone who is not PCC or Hazard.

Not saying Estill is going to win region, but they seem to have a solid team year in and year out. Perry threw off against them in the region last year, and almost bit them in the butt. Estill had the lead heading down the stretch, just could not close. PCC had to bring in Conley to bring them back.

Now that we’re a few weeks into the season. what’s everyones predictions now? Powell is gonna beat a lot of teams this year. Thoughts?

Seems to me the 14th region is a one horse race

Perry County Central

Bold statement. Unfortunatley, with no seeding in the 54th district the Commodores could be facing Devin Morris and Hazard just to advance to the regional tournament.

You could basically have set the field on Feb. 15th for the rest of the regional tournament teams:
53rd- KCC/LCC
55th- Breathitt/Jackson
56th- Powell/Estill

Powell couldn't score against Knott. I don't think Powell is consistent enough to be a contender.
