Pikeville 95 Johnson Central 84

Hail Pikeville! I still can't believe the Panthers came back from down 18. Hats off to Coach Justice & Company on the chip! Newcomers Byers and Rhodes were ginormous last night! Good luck in the Sweet 16.

Pikeville will be tough again next year. Only lose a couple of players, which will be quickly replaced with more recruits.

Too bad high school doesn't play a Best of 7 series for regional championship.

At least four games of what we say last night would be awesome. My heart couldn't take another loss like JC took last night, but as a fan of either team or of good basketball... this would be a dream.

Belfry may be in the the 7-8 range only because the Region will be down. Belfry loses a lot this year. JV and Jr High doesn't provide immediate help so I don't see them contending in Region.

Best 2 out of 3 for Regional Final would be a nice thing to add to the SUPER REGIONAL! :Cheerlead

One game at each high school in the finals, then one game at the Expo if needed.

After watching a video of this game this morning, I am still absolutely amazed that JC lost! What is so shocking is the way it happened. JC jumped out to a 7 point lead after the first quarter and looked like they were in control early. They would go on to build on that lead growing it to 18 points at 38-20 in the early part of the second quarter. (With an 18 point lead at 5:00 min. mark in the second quarter like most, I thought that Pikeville would fold). However, They would go on to out score the Eagles 15-5 and cut the lead to a very manageable 8 points at 43-35. (That run was the key to the game! If, JC builds that lead or even maintains a double digit lead at the half, this game was over.) But, they let the Panthers cut that lead and with it gain momentum and confidence going into the half.
In the third quarter Pikeville showed that confidence and promptly came out and pressured the Eagles getting them out of the game plan. Before you could say WOW, they had out scored JC 25-12 and now Pikeville held a 7 point lead of their own at 62-55. JC made a run after Blair caught fire and was trying to WILL them to the win. But from the 2:00 min. mark on only had two more shot attempts? Final score 95-84.

Now what is so amazing was,In the end Pikeville would have gone on a RUN that would see them out score Johnson Central 75-41 from the 5:00 min. mark of the 2nd quarter to the final buzzer! The same JC program that was making their 6th Straight Region Championship game appearance(2012-2017)and had won 4 of those Championship games was out scored 75-41 by a Pikeville program that had not won a Region Championship since 1999 (18 yrs). and had only 1 win in the Region Tournament from 2012-2016.

Just Amazing!

they got 4 starters back and Varney was the sixman and he started 4 or 5 games this year we lose Woolum which started every game that he was healthy and Catron started most of the games but Coach Thompson rotate them around so you don't know much about our basketball team Pikeville will be the only team that will be hard for us to match up with

At least JC isnt complaining about the refs. Maybe if they spent more time practicing instead of worrying about whos calling the game they wouldnt be going home early.
Nothing makes me happier then when a team gets refs removed from big games only to lose!

Congrats to Pikeville on the regional championship! They flat out got after it in the 2nd half. Battaile and Roberts wore JC out on the offensive and defensive glass. The rebounds they secured and put backs was killer all night. I was so impressed with Pikeville's decision making all night against the full court press. They just made the right decision time after time whether or not it was to take a open shot or to make the extra pass. If they can shot the way they did against JC they will have a good chance against Perry. Good luck and represent the moutains well!

As for JC, it is a very disappointing end to their season and the careers of 3 starters in Mason Blair, Cole Crace, and Austin Davis. They came up a little short against a really good team. Honestly I think the 18 point lead was the worst thing that could have happened for JC as they became sloppy and unfocused. The effort level on defense was pretty low in the third quarter and Pikeville absolutely killed them for it. I knew coming into this game Pikeville would give them a lot of trouble and there's no shame in saying you got beat by a better team. Overall, another good year for JC that ended in a regional championship game.

I was most impressed with the body language and engagement level of the players even down 18. You could see they were disappointed, obviously, but they didn't hang their heads or mope, they just kept working with urgency and actually decided to flip the switch and speed game up even more. That tells me a lot about the heart of this team. Once they moved past the first few turnovers against the JC press, they were fine, saw it could be broken and just kept breaking it. This team has the ability to go to Rupp and make some noise. The key will be not getting big eyes. I like their chances to do well in Rupp.

I listened to the Perry Central vs. Knott Central game last night on WSGS.... the way it sounded, Perry Central couldn't get nothing going on offense. Only scoring 57 points in Double Overtime.

I realize everybody can have a bad game, but Perry Central had better come out hitting on all cylinders vs. Pikeville or they'll be a 1 & Done.
