I'm a newbie to the whole message board thing. As a Mayfield football fan I hope to add some insight and participate in some prep football discussion.

It was the longest scrimmage I ever saw. It started at 6:30 and wasn't done til 9. That explains the scoring. Also lots of different looks.

Killbilly, we start at 7:30 and goes til bout 9. It's at Hall Hotel.

55, what receivers, if any, stood out? Since Trajon didn't play all that much, what RB(s) were carrying the load and how did the backups look overall. Who's playing on the DL this year and what kind of size do we have there this year. I know we lost all starters to graduation last year..
Sorry to load you up with questions. but, better to do all on one email than 3 or 4..

All the receivers looked great. I mean great. Bright looked good as usual for the little time they used him. I really liked the set we used with Tyler and Hurt as rb's at the same time. That looked real good. We are bigger this year than in past. The only concern anyone could have is the kicking game. But if the offense runs like it did in the scrimmage, it won't matter.

If you want to see just how much we impressed the Tennessee folks just look on coach t. It's in the 3a 4a section under the Milan/Mayfield scrimmage thread.

The kicking game is a huge concern. It's been before Ryan Ivey since Mayfield has worried about the kicking game. In fact, several kickers( 5 by my count), including both Iveys, kicked at the college level since 1998.

Yeah, they were calling Mayfield the Alcoa of Ky HS football. Smaller but tenacious, they said.
One guy said, they sure play a lot better than they look. Said you won't be impressed just by looking at them, said they're really small, but, man, I'd love for them to bring some of those small guys across the boarder cause they can play.
Another said, we actually played them closer this year than most.. I remember a few years ago, they beat us by 4 or 5 scores and we went on and played in the 3a championship game that year..

Ok, all you Mayfield lovers. What's the score of the McCracken vs. Mayfield game this year. I know you bring home rings, I know your a small school. Hell, I'm a fan of the program too. But my kid's at MCHS (freshman non-factor) and i love this Football Talk! Give me some true, passionate Cardinal fan prediction.

Honestly, just like the 1st 3 games, it'll be a close game that could go either way. Mayfield holds their own, but, when it gets down to the 4th quarter and it's been 90 to 95 degrees all game, the deeper team usually has the advantage. If McCracken can keep it close while Mayfield is fresh, then they likely win, if Mayfield gets a 2 or 3 score lead, I think the Cards hang on..

I am hearing a lot of talk up North in Shawn Jackson land of great things so it should be another barn burner but I think that the added depth the Cards have at many positions this year will be enough to get past this and the other hot games. MayfieldCardinal's loser, McCracken Co

I truly think that the Cards win by 2 scores this year. I haven't seen the offense look this good since 2010. I also expect the defense to be better this year. I think the Stangs will have a slight let down this year.

High School conditioning seems so different now. I think the approach at MCHS is for kids to play themselves into shape almost? Mayfield gets the endurance edge, but obviously a bigger school should have more overall depth. 2-3 quality DT subs can go along way in the 4th quarter. I really don't have a clue about this matchup? One slow kid in the secondary can bust either teams hopes. Yes.....i'm a little scared of our secondary. MCHS is better, no doubt in my mind. If Mayfield wins then....look out 2A. Cause he's coming and he's bringing hell with him!

I and some others, feel this Cards team has the chance to be one of the best we have had since 2010. That is what I am hanging my hat on vs MC

Conditioning is an issue early in the season, particularly with your big guys. The fewer of those guys playing both ways, the better off you'll be. From the Milan scrimmage, it seems as if we will only have off. linemen in reserve spots on the DL. This will help greatly. It'll be hot for everyone. The one factor that other school seem to forget about Mayfield is that these kids are going to fight tooth and nail regardless of the opponent.

I just did some interesting research. I have been under the assumption that our offense had suffered tremendously when Steven Hatchell took his 2 year vacation. I have run the numbers and was surprised to see that it wasn't such a dramatic difference. The numbers show that from seasons 2009 through 2013 with Coach Hatchell handling the offense, we averaged 44 points per game. In the years of 2014 & 2015 we averaged 38 points per game without him. The worst year in the Hatchell reign was 2011 when we only scored 588 points. Without him the worst year was 2015 when we only scored 532 points.
Now, the eye test tells me that we are a little more diverse under Hatchell. I notice when we are in tight games Coach Joe has a tendency to go with the obvious more conservative approach in certain situations. Coach Hatchell looks at what the defense offers and then exploits it. It will be interesting to see how this plays out this year.
