North Laurel 17 - Southwestern 7 (Final)

Lyn Turpin Wrote:Congratulations to North Laurel last night. You deserved to win. But, you will find out next Friday night where you really stand.

I do want to point a couple of things for people who aren't close to SW's program and maybe weren't actually at the game last night.

Other than one big run in the first quarter and a blown pass coverage at the end, SW's defense held a 3,000+ yard rushing team to very little yardage. NL had only scored 10 points with about 2 minutes left in the game. Our defense gave us a chance to win even though they stayed on the field all night because our offense couldn't get a first down or turned it over.

Without Edwards, our offense is horrible. He makes yardage out of nothing. Gover is a very good runner but Edwards will be one of the best to ever come out of this area. Most any decent defense holds us to very few points. Other than a couple of kids, our O line is not very good and not very strong. However, we continue to try and run over people. We have some other offensive weapons but we rarely use them and continue to run the same 4-5 plays over and over. Not to mention, 2 of our 4 losses (Bourbon & NL) might have been avoided had we attempted a field goal instead of going for it on 4th down when we know our offense is struggling.

With that being said, I am very glad Coach French came when he did and turned this team around. He is a great coach. They will continue to progress. Also, we had a good bunch of seniors who finished with two very good seasons and stayed with it even after the fiasco they had to endure their first two years. We are proud of them and may get to see a couple of them play on Saturdays next year.

SW Defense is vary good but the only reason they slowed down are run game was we passed a lot more. Nelson had only about 10 to 12 carries and QB had about the same. But SW had a vary good defense.

Sounds like your uber-talented kids have done a phenomenal job of overcoming the poor coaching they endured for their entire careers. Best of luck to the Warrior faithful in their recruitment of a real coach and staff.

Too much talk about North, they have no passing game and have played no one. SW counts as no one and to the person who put them as next years number 1 preseason you need to rethink that long and hard. North has built the program now needs to play better teams to be more prepared for teams like Pulaksi Co. Playing small schools who are no good will do nothing to get ready for the playoffs. Best of luck to North though I would like to see them pull the upset.

North passed more in this game than they had all season, reason big numbers were absent in the running game last night. No one was more surprised than the fans, wasn't expecting it at all. Someone said he had close to 130 yds thru the air along with what they got on the ground. Black's defensive unit was stellar, no other description for it. North has one of the best Sr. Linebackers in the state, he had a huge play dropping SW Sawyer on 3rd down. Nelson, is nimble as he can be, breaking thru their line last night to score, he had a big hole. O'line and D'line for North was out sized at almost every spot and still they did their job and did it well. Just an overall good effort by North Laurel. Congratulations, to all the Jaguars and staff.

It's funny to see people post that "well they couldn't run on us, so we forced them to pass" as if that's a accomplishment. To undermine a teams effort. South western still lost. Congratulation North!

Congrats JAGS! I figured this would be a hard fought game, it was 7 to 10 with about 2 minutes to go. I got so tore up I about dropped my hot chocolate from nerves!! Tucker Sharp has picked the right time to turn it up, a pick 6 last week vs South and a game sealing touchdown last night! Defense was great! O-Line & D-Line was undersized vs Southwestern as usual but battled with lots of heart & determination every play! Great to see the fans fired up as well. Lots of smiles and hugs on the field at the end of the game for the JAGS! We are proud of our team and best part is that you get to do it again at Pulaski Co!!! Way 2 Go JAGS!!!

I have no idea about NL's schedule, but a short list of nearby, quality teams to consider for a non-district schedule upgrade includes:

Bell County
Corbin
Danville
Garrard County
Hazard
Knox Central
Madison Southern
Rockcastle County
Somerset
Wayne County

Sorry didn't mean too much talk on this thread. I meant in general as a state contender. I think they are good but need to be able to throw more consistently. Great d and running game so far but that schedule hasn't challenged that enough to say there a contender. My point was that and that they need tone beat Pulaski to be considered a great team because that would be a huge win. I hope they do it.

When North District changed they were locked in with 4 of those teams and they are going to play cross town rival South Laurel & in the bowl game with them. North played Madison Southern & Wayne County last year, beat them both. Not sure why you think a 5 A school should play 1-3 A schools? SW & Pulaski don't even play Somerset and they are in the same county. North convincingly beat every team they played but one this season. Besides the teams on their schedule this year are not down every year, no way of knowing a year or two in advance when these coaches are setting up some of these games who is going to be up and who is going to be down.

Your kidding or high.

Im sure the coaches appreciate all the hard work you have done to help build the program the past 7 years and all of a sudden decide it is time to get better prepared. Small schools? NL is 5A, all schools within any reasonable distance will be small.
I know they cant get Somerset or Hazard to play they have tried I asked. Go tell those coaches to play NL, they wont.

NL went wire to wire with Pulaski County last year, lost by 1 point. NL has beaten Pulaski during this long run they have had and played them tough each time. They have beaten actually a bunch of good teams in the past, well Larky years.

Bell County Can see this one soon
Corbin PLAYED BEFORE, from a longtime Laurel Countian there is no love lost for this team who has constantly had NL and SL and LC players on their rosters.
Danville Just became good again anyway
Garrard County SURE Maybe they would
Hazard WONT
Knox Central PLAYED and WON
Madison Southern PLAYED and WON
Rockcastle County WONT
Somerset WONT
Wayne County PLAYED and WON

See above not sure how to work that quote

Willie Turnover Wrote:I must admit I was one of those SW fans that thought we be right there with PC in the running for a state title.

I was really excited about SW chances this year. We returned a lot of players that were District champs and regional runner Up's. I figured our QB would be much improved with a year of experience. I thought with Gover and Edwards in the back field, Turbo at tight end and Butte and JP at receiver we would be hard to stop. We could spread it around having 5 weapons. But with Butte not playing, Edwards getting hurt and not getting the ball to Turpin. Coupled with the two quarterback system we became one dimensional and low powered.

You can never guarantee or bank on players being healthy or even playing anymore. NL was without two starters last night as well at three different positions. They will be back though the Voice of NL said on radio

Why is every week NL has to prove themselves to some random non beliver fan base? Ive never seen so many people hate a perennial loser and the last 5-7 years become winners and everyone hates that NL is relevant. NL is very young at many skilled positions and has a really good upcoming younger classes so they will be or should say the Adminsitration should be credited to getting a good bunch of coaches and allowing this doormat program to become relevant.

I think Nelson had around 110 yards and carried 11 times. I believe that over 10+ yards a carry and like someone else said, who needed to run when I told you that NL could throw and they did. Some times timing is not accidental. I know I counted 16 or more pass attempts and I don't know what you saw but a blown coverage was not how NL scored, Tucker Sharpp just outran him, witnessed that with my own two eyeballs.

Let's get some predictions for North and Pulaski who wins and by how much?

I ain't seen all the stats yet but paper had Nelson under 100 is all it said and north was 8-16 for 126 thru the air.
#47
I am not a NL hater, but was merely making a point that SW's defense played a pretty good game but our offense could do very little.

If you look at the stat line in the paper today, Nelson had 81 rushing, but 51 came on the big run in the first quarter. Only 30 more yards after that.

McWhorter threw for 137 yards, but 66 was on the big TD to Sharp near the end. So, other than that play, 7 receptions for 71 yards.

My point was directed toward SW, that other than those two game changing plays, our defense played very well against a team that averages about 300 yards rushing and 40+ points per game.

NL's defense played very well, too and SW's offense just did not click near the end of the season.

NELSON had about 80 QB had about 40 and team had about 170 rush 126 pass. NELSON AND QB RUN GAME is why north can pass if need too. This offense can do a lot of things because of are run game o line is vary good D is good. NORTH DONT FORGET WHAT YOU ARE. RUN TEAM. O line and backs to good to be stopped all night.

I would have said before game if somebody told me Sw held north to 170 on the ground that sw would win. Larkey adjusted well. Was hoping he would Them markets are a stubborn bunch. Lol

Larkey's. Not markets. Lol

Personally, I think North did what they needed to do to win. Even if it wasn't their normal way of doing it, they "got her done". I thought they mixed it up, until no one knew what to expect especially SW! That is good coaching!

Sounds great! I think a Bell-North Laurel series would be very exciting and competitive!

I certainly understand why you might forego playing Corbin. But wouldn't immediately dismiss playing some of the local "smaller" programs like Hazard, Danville, Somerset, or Garrard County. Year-in and year-out, they can often provide pretty solid competition in weeks 0-6.

If you want to look east, Pikeville, Shelby Valley, Prestonsburg, Leslie County and others would be a good option, too.

I just admire what Coach Larkey has done at NL and would love to see his program's assimilation into the Eastery KY's upper levels of competition.

I recently re-connected with 4 other women with whom I started grade school and graduated high school. Our lives took different directions, but eventually we have gotten back together and it's just like high school all over again! LOL This weekend was our trip to Gatlinburg together, and we had a blast!!

Unfortunately, I missed a great weekend of high school football.

Congratulations Jaguars!! What a game this must have been. I'm not surprised that they won; I really thought this would be a hard fought battle between two great teams.

As usual, I was correct!!
