Very true.
You can be a great high school player and not a major college prospect.

I understand what you mean, but also every dad, uncle, cousin and weirdo thinks someone they care about is better than what they are. If they are that good a decent college will come knocking and if not then don't really put them in the same level. Some kids may not be blessed with a college body or missing one thing that they can hide in high school but the fact of the matter is they still aren't that caliber of a player.

So you can be a bad high school player but a good College player? OK, people still sleeping us.

We have our own college stud in the making at Corbin but since everyone is always talking about Broughton on here I will say this. He deserves his 9 offers. Everyone that knows him that I have talked to refers to his work ethic and drive. He seems like a nice kid. This is the cold hard facts he has 9 offers and one of those is in the ACC from the rumors that I hear. I wouldn't have thought that myself but I'm not the expert. Don't give me crap that the assistant was from laurel county. No d1 assistants make the final calls on offers and if they did they wouldn't risk there job offering someone not worthy. Men's d-1 doesn't have the scholarships to spare like women's d-1. So until someone else can match that offer don't try and put them in that level. You only end up sounding jealous. I hate sounding like this as I am one who just loves when we have activity on the board and could talk basketball all day. I just can't stand when people want to try and push a kid down who is obviously good enough or he wouldn't be getting he offers. It's free game to talk about NL underachieving and debate if they can turn it around this season but the facts about Broughton is undeniable the true professionals have spoken.

No, everything isn't about North Laurel.
Some people had North picked No. 1 going into the season last year.

Corbin is a prime example of the really good high school players not being major recruits. I could set here and rattle off 20 or 30 names of kids that I thought would sign D1 when they were just frosh and ended up never playing college ball or going to a small NAIA school. Corbin has had more dominant high school players over the years that ended up not going to a good college than anyone I know. Good news for Corbin is, at least they had the good players.

I agree with playmaker, you can be a good high school player and never play college basketball.
07-28-2015, 12:48 PM
I'm not saying you suck if you don't get recruited but I am saying that you are not the player that a d-1 player is. You may average more points or rebounds in high school but overall you're not the same calieber of player. The NAIA kids were all good players at Corbin but we're any in the last 20 years really better than a Rick jones or Corey Sears? Even if you do say that they are obviously someone who is more qualified than me or you didn't think so. Like I said though that doesn't mean you can't have a good player. Most of my favorite players to watch are kids who play with everything they have. Jackson county had the Hammons boy last year who was my favorite player to watch but I'm not going to argue that he is better than another player... More qualified people can do that.

College coaches aren't experts either. They recruit 15 and end up with about 7 that can play. Every year the so called experts (Coaches) Pick one player from Kentucky that they feel is the best. (Mr.Basketball) very few can compete with the talent from other states.
07-28-2015, 02:23 PM
Oh I forgot a hillbilly (which I'm proud to be) who works the 9-5 is much more qualified on basketball players. Obviously we all know not all college coaches are great but they are the experts. (Not us)

I see your point, but college coaches recruit more on potential than what the player has done in high school.
Ervin Stepp scored 40-plus points a game in high school and, as far as I know, wasn't recruited by major Div. I schools and ended up at Eastern.
Scott Russell was Mr. Football in 1991 and played at Lees-McRae.
Phil Cox wasn't recruited by Kentucky and most Division I schools, but was Mr. Basketball in 1981. He showed that those coaches who passed him weren't so smart as the all-time leading scorer at Vandy and an All-SEC player.
The name that comes to mind for me from Corbin is Kerry Sipple. He was a tremendous high school player but wasn't a Division I recruit, and I don't know if I wouldn't take him over Sears if I needed to win a high school game. Donnie Allen was another one from Corbin who was a great high school player. There have been many others, as Gut said.

Ky really didn't want farmer but felt the pressure to take him and he was as good a high school player I ever watched
07-29-2015, 03:53 AM
May have been one of the best offensive players you have ever seen. Was one of the worst on defense. Plenty of video around to prove it.
07-29-2015, 04:14 AM
Junejett1 I will agree with that.
07-29-2015, 04:26 AM
I will say though that a lot of scorers AINT very good defensively. I played with and against Allan Houston and Travis ford and neither was very good on d.
07-29-2015, 04:38 AM
A lot of coaches will put their best offensive player on the other teams worst offense player. Hoping they don't get in foul trouble.

Spot on. Both you and HCS have pretty much nailed it.
I remember watching Corey Sears in high school, who was around the same age as me and thinking how ridiculously more talented he was than anyone else in EKY that I seen all year. Doing 360 dunks and leaping over everyone.
Rick Jones was just heads and shoulders above the rest and maybe the most college ready player I seen. Had it not been for his personal issues, that may have been one that made it.
And what about Pietrowski himself? I remember when Dale Brown came up from LSU while Pietrowski signed with them. I was younger than, only in elementary school while Pietrowski was playing, but very few have handled the ball as well as him and was as good of a game manager as ive ever seen at that level. I wish he would have stayed and really done something down there.
This is what makes me think the caliber of player just isn't what it use to be in the area, although the game has changed. These were the types of players teams wanted in the 90's, now a days not so much with all the AAU ball and inner city kids getting a chance to do something. So, it has me wondering if players then were that much better, or if the kids today just don't get the looks they use to.
what happened with the Crawford kid that was at Corbin a few years ago? He was doing pretty good in 8th grade and as a frosh playing varsity for Corbin and I never knew what ended up happening with him. He was the closest prospect to Sears I had seen at Corbin and it kind of just fizzled out.

AAU has changed recruiting. Coaches roll in to the Peach Jam, etc, and see top recruits all day long in one setting. They are also playing against the same level of competition. I'm not a fan of the new process, but it is what it is.

Josh Crawford had an excellent high school career, but got into body building after his freshman year and really bulked up, then injured his knee going into his sophomore year. He lost some of his mobility and quickness due to the injury and to the bulking up of his body, which made him basically a really good, versatile high school post player. He played at Centre for a couple of years, but ended up giving basketball up to concentrate on going into the Ministry field.

Josh was a outstanding young man. He just never developed the skills to play out on the floor. Normally when your the tallest kid that put u inside. That's Ky basketball.

I read in the News Journal that Eric Swords was going to be an asst. coach at Corbin. He will be a good addition to an already good staff.

Thanks for the update!
I always wondered what happened to that kid. I had no clue about any of that. IMO, it seemed he was much more hyped than the Taylor kid at Corbin now, and seemed a lot better against better competition back then.
Good to hear hes doing well.
Old Jacket and I were talking and another name is Roger Richardson at Williamsburg. Went on to break pretty much every record at Cumberland. A Richie Farmer type shooter but with height. He should have went somewhere better. Always puzzled us as to why he never got into coaching. Maybe never wanted too, it isn't for everybody. I had him for a PE teacher back in middle school where he was for years. He would absolutely kill us in anything we played. Just another forgotten great from this area.
07-30-2015, 01:57 PM
Roger Richardson was one of the best to ever play at Cumberlands, I go back far enough to say that and there have been a lot of great players to play there...Roger was a good high school athlete at Whitley Co had no offers except at Cumberland...I think he started with half a baseball and half Basketball scholarship...The guy could shoot lights out...

the 91 team from Corbin was a good a high School team as I ever Seen play. Lost in the Semi finals to Ballard by 6 was tied with a minute to go. If it wasn't for a missed layup Corbin may very well have won. Each kid new there role.If they had the lead in the fourth quarter it was all over. had the three top free throw shooter in the state and all could handle the ball. I think that was the only time Tony went to the State Tourney. He was the 6th man.The most underrated player to play at Corbin was on that team. Brent Barton Should have been in the Corbin Hall of fame A long time Ago. Bo Roaden had a lot of Health issues during the regular season and Brent kept the team together.

That were actually playing PRP, who went on to win their second straight state title. If I remember correctly, Barton got injured and was out late in the game. Corbin had the ball with the game tied with around a minute to go and were trying to hold for the last shot. Instead, they turned it over and PRP scored off of the turnover and went on to win. There was a missed layup in there also, not sure if it was before or after that costly turnover though.
I can't believe Brent Barton is not in the Hall of Fame, especially considering some of the inductees that have gone in lately. There are some very good people involved in the selection process, but there is also a lot of politics involved in that process.

prp won state in 1989 beat wayne co that was last time prp won state. fairdale won it in 1990 and 1991
