The 10K more bucks is a nice dream, but that's about all.

Eagle. I most always agree with you.
But, you have taken one part of my original comment and blown it up.
If I read correctly, I did make the assumption that Coach Brewer knew ball, right? Again. I HAVE no idea who he is. None. All I know is what I've read, and if we want to give this site credibility, then I'd like to think we can believe a good part of what we read when it comes to serious threads. If not, why have it? Neither here nor there, but if Powell County was looking for someone that they knew:
-"Pirate Football" probably meant a little bit more to than others.
- Someone younger, who if using Vegas odds was going to stick a while a little longer.
-someone who had played college ball, who went to Powell County. Maybe somebody the kids from there can look up to and say, "He did it, why can't I?"
...then I have no reason to believe this wasn't a solid hire for them.
For the record. Coach Burchett is eligible for full KTRS benefits I believe. That's ultimately why he decided to hang it up.

I totally agree about loyalty these days. The vast majority of places in this state you are given mules w/ falling apart barn and expected to qualify for KY Derby preliminary races, and some expecting you to run in it.
I guess me hoping that there might be more places out there to buck thst trend is probably far fetched.
If places start doing that, plus offering 10K more in raises....we might have something.

Brandon Brewer has been named the Powell County head coach

Everyone needs to chill on the best coach stuff. this is High school football, you play with who you have. Urban Meyer would be the guy ran out on rails with the wrong kids on his team. just my opinion but all schools need to relax. hire good men with a knowledge of the game and a desire to improve as a coach and wait for that right group of kids to come along and do something special.
See this is the problem with that mentality why work hard and wait for the correct group of kids. Stay status quo and wait the Eastern Kentucky way and philosophy. That is a pipe dream for many programs and why so many don't go into coaching in general because of mediocrity mentalities IMO

I don't think it's as much mediocre mentality as it is reality.
I don't think he said, "Not to work hard". I think what he meant (how I took it anyway), is to work hard always...do the best you can with what you have & when those good groups of kids come through, ride the wave and see what happens.
In small communities like that, Talent level and schedule mean everything. Hell, it means everything at every school for the most part, but especially your middle of the pack or below schools.
With that said, I've long thought that EKY is the best places to have a realistic shot at truly building a program. Far less diversity when it comes to many demographical aspects than the rest of state. More of a level playing field.
Look at the 14th and 16th regions in basketball. I know there aren't any schools bigger than 4A in the 14th. Isn't it the same for the 16th?

Coach Brewer will build a competitive program and will most likely get some of the more talented players walking the halls to play. Now, will that be enough to compete for championships? Time will tell. However, they will be well coached, work hard, be disciplined, and play hard.

there are so many factors in being successful, and many that prevent success. every school system has their own. Maybe all the athletes think they are going to be basketball stars at 6' and forgo football, maybe a community of parents that traditionally don't care for sports and especially football, etc., etc. In the end if you have an individual as a coach who is a role model, knows the game, and works at being better as a coach the factors preventing success usually roll away. Communities will want to get involved and young men will aspire to be players. However, a name has never won a single game and these super coaches are not going to schools with limited kids to pull from. it is now and always will be about the kids. You have some that are capable or you do not.

I agree with you on many points thanks for the insight, I wasn't saying don't work hard I'm sure just about every coach will think they are working hard. My point is so many schools just accept being average but it goes back to that Tony Dungy book success is uncommon and for the most part people enjoy being average. That is so true in our nation as whole right now, this generation of kids is in trouble because they are lazy, and have a sense of entitlement for some reason. I guess we have created the monster now we must deal with the consequences. So much fun for the coaches is being taken out of the game because of school, parent, and game limitations. I read an article the other day that the coaching workforce has declined over 25% percent in the last decade. Ok off my soap box now enjoy your day.

Why didn't he get them out while he has been an asst there the last couple of years?
05-14-2015, 07:12 PM
Getting the kids out on the field rests squarely on the shoulders of the head coach. An assistant can talk to kids and help generate interest, but the head coach has to close the deal. The head coach makes the final decisions on positions, playing time, and generally sets the tone on how players are treated. If kids don't want to play for the head coach then your numbers will be down. Now that Brewer is in that position, he should be able to get kids out. If he can't, then it is solely his failure and Powell is going to have a tougher time competing.

You are wrong and I hope you are not someones asst coach! It is up to all coaches to recruit the hallway, and if you think different I disagree with you. The head coach cant do everything and if this Brewer guy wasn't getting kids out when he was an asst then he will bomb as the head coach.

It is nice to have coaches to recruit the hallways, but what if your coaches aren't in the building? What if they are paraprofessionals or middle/elementary education? Only two surefire ways to get more kids out...1) Friends...Kids will pass along how fun football and will get their friends out. 2) Winning...Everyone wants to be a winner. Unless you can offer some kids in the building a stipend, they just wont play no matter what.

Well "Eagle" you definitely have not landed on this situation. Brewer already has a huge turnout, kids are excited and the game in Powell County is about to get much more energetic and fun. Also, you must not know much about the game to make blanket statements about Eastern Kentucky that really only apply to a few schools. Grow up and get on board! It's going to be a fun season win or lose!

Who said anything about coach brewer not in the building? Apparently he was in the building

Find the basketball/baseball kids who aren't playing football. Let them be your targets.
I personally think the MS age kids is where you can really recruit the most kids.
Those 15-16 year olds walking the halls who aren't playing anything? More times than not (don't take this the wrong way), but to hell with them. Most likely they don't have what it takes anyway. Be it commitment level and/or they just aren't worth a crap to begin with. Obviously, as with all things, there are exceptions to the rule.
So, instead of recruiting the halls just for the sake of numbers looking good, go spend time at baseball/basketball practice and games.
I heard a good coach one time say this when it comes to getting kids out:
"Asking a 16 year old with a truck, some money in his pocket and a good looking girl to come out here and give up that and his summers? Boys. We are fighting a losing battle." Hilarious. Sad, but true.

Brewer will not be the coach, but would probably do a good job.

Ha i have never known of a losing season being fun. Maybe you all do have the coach you need.

And a huge turnout wont do you any good if coaching is mediocre.

Brewer pretty much ran practices last year. I think he's ready and will do a great job. Powell has some young talent that could make a big difference in a couple of years.
