The most successful coach in 13th region history and one of the most successful coaches in the state didn't even have a conditioning program and started backing practices off about this time every year. I'm not so sure they're out of shape as bad as some think.

True. In an age where every sport seems to stress off season, preseason and in season conditioning, one of the best did none. You literally played your way into shape. As for the present, sometimes conditioning can be confused with effort. Defense is all about effort. Just saying.

Agree...To be good at DEFENSE you must take it personal...Being in shape has very little to do with it, and DEFENSE I know.

I agree defense has a lot to do with effort but doesn't there come a point when physical stamina takes place toward the end of a game? Like not getting past halfcourt on run outs because you're bent over huffing?

If it is important to you then stamina will not be an issue...Either you want to play defense or you don't...Just the way I see it.
I was taught and teach that a good player is good at all aspects of the game, not just on the offensive end.
Shots don't always fall but a kids effort should always be there.

I did get fired from coaching my church's C-Team for being too hard on the kids so I could be wrong.:HitWall:

By this point of the season, if you're not in shape to play, then you ain't working hard enough. Playing, running, effort or no effort, if you can't go all out by now, then you've been loafing all year.

Agree with you guys 100%. You both have answered the point I am trying to make. We all know who hasn't been in shape all season, it shows in the effort, and it shows on the defensive (and sometimes offensive) end of the floor. It also is shown in lifestyle off the court. But, that's a discussion for another day.

Playing defense comes from within. As a player, you should pride yourself on help defense and your own individual assignment.Smith plays great defense every possession it seems.Others are hit and miss.Clay needs a team defensive practice. If you won't play defense, you don't play.Might wake up the "Tiger" inside so to speak.

Give effort at both ends. Don't take any breaks. Define effort as your all out best to ATP
depletion each time. That is, always Bust a Gut. Yes, you will be in condition to play
your best ball. Physically. Now, throw in full Bust a Gut focus on each play. Effort
with focus are the goals.

I agree with everyone but even if you look at last year (yes we did have chip and jake)....but our boys didn't really play their best ball on either side of the ball until tourny time........It was like Marcum said ok boys now it is time to play and flipped on a switch.....when it comes regional play my money is still on Clay because these boys will not won't to lose and go home.....and I think you will see a different Trey in tourny time when it win or go home.
