Clay County hires Justin Combs
DarthVader Wrote:I really like the Georgia Tech/Navy Triple, it's a thing of beauty when they get it going. Nebraska wasn't really a triple team for the most part, they ran alot of zone schemes up front, They rarely read the dive as an option. They ran the belly option and load option, even used alot of the ole Delaware Wing T number system on their plays as far as how they determined right and left, not so much in using it as a series, which in turn was simply a reboot of the old Michigan Single Wing terminology. It was a thing of beauty as well during the Osbourne era, I really enjoyed watching the Eric Crouch teams play, that reverse pass to close out the Oklahoma game back in 2000 is one my greatest memories of college football.

I would like to see them go with alot of zone schemes up front, I think to get the full benefit of the inside/outside zone you have to hang your hat on those schemes as a base offense, they are so versatile with everything you do in the backfield while still keeping your scheme the same between the tackles. I also like the Power and Counter scheme to go along with it as an alternative, really like watching the Stanford/Michigan State/Alabama offenses work right now.

Although, If the Tigers get downhill on some good ole mountain Power I, Blocking Down, Kicking out, then I will be on board 100%, too many guys want to be pretty nowadays on offense.

What are we looking at an Odd or Even front on defense? Do you guys think they will Pattern Read in the secondary or are they going to do more dropping to grass? I would like to see a versatile defense with a stack scheme or 425 against the spread with alot of Fire Zone looks and disguising where we are brining our 4th rusher while also being able to drop down into an 60 look against the I teams.

I think you just went waaaay over my head there Darth.
SKINNYPIG Wrote:I think you just went waaaay over my head there Darth.

I am just purely speculating, In reality we all know it's going to come down to Jimmies and Joe's, not the X&O's. Gotta find something we can do consistently and do it.
DarthVader Wrote:Wouldn't take a whole lot of speed, I am sure Sexton could handle it, on Midline are you talking about reading the 3 and have the quarterback pull and replace on a keep read? or are you talking about running it more like a true triple look and getting a pitch phase off of it? If we commit to midline, I would like to see us run ISV and OSV as well to give us a complete look to attack multiple points along the line. Do we have a full back that can break it up the gut on the midline?

Yes, let Sexton read, keep or pull & go.
SKINNYPIG Wrote:Yes, let Sexton read, keep or pull & go.

That Midline is something else when you can run it from the Flex look and have your play side slot lead up and ISO the PSLB. If your QB is tough and can read it its tough to defend, especially at the high school level, I also like the Belly Read look off of that same action, or what alot of people call the "Double Dive", If I coached a team I would just call it Belfry Left or Belfry right, alot of mountain guys have made their living off of that look from THE BONE. It's fun to speculate but Combs being a Breathitt guy I am about sure we will see alot of 4 wide Franklin System type stuff, probably alot of Mesh,Shallow, Y Stick, Y Sail, etc. It sure is fun to speculate, will spring practice be open? I'd like to get an early look.

Yeah, I doubt Combs does any type of Bone on a regular basis, look for spread, spread & spread. Which is okay by me.
I agree, The teams that can spread you out and still be physical between the tackles are a tough out. Plus it's easier to recruit now to run the spread because that's all kids see on TV, the only thing that really hurts spread mountain schools is when they run up against teams with more speed that can get that extra man in the box and be able to press the receivers without much help over the top, but that is about the truth against any offense. To me that's what killed the 08 Breathitt team in the finals against Central. I think we will do fine in the spread though, just establish an identity and go from there. Do you guys think we will be more tempo based?
He is having a spring game is what was in the paper here in Jackson. Id say it will be open. He's the type that likes the community around and the kids love it when people come and watch practice. As long as they aren't a distraction I see it being open. Spring game will probably be something like they used to do here at breathitt. More of a scrimmage type deal. But it's fun to watch.

I think that would be a great idea if it's treated as a big event and he can get the community involved, spring football games can be exciting. Good tool to recruit for the upcoming season.
Heard today that clays past coaches will be in Rocastle. Anyone heard? Good luck to them.
They will do well at THE ROCK.
Rock is a pretty good program. They will do well over there. Good luck to those fellas unless you play Breathitt, Corbin or Clay. Have to stay true to the breathitt boys.

Mister Vader You're way over my head here also.I'd say you're a cut above the average football guy.

Some parent's will try and argue with his post.
I like blocking and tackling. I like everyone supporting. I like the youth programs on same page etc
Give me tiger pride with 4 or 5 offensive plays and a solid base defense that hates to lose.
Give me that and team will be hard to handle. Eastern Ky football is who is bigger stronger and faster
Good luck CC I think you made the right choice.

I think at the 4A level you better be able to run a little more than 4 or 5 if you are going to win at a high level, a good defensive coach can take away your best and force you to play left handed. Hard to win at the higher levels of football in high school ball unless you are truly that much bigger and stronger if you are going to run 4-5 plays. It's still a game that when a TE blocks down and a power back and full back come to kick you out, your character and ability will be revealed, no matter how good mommy and daddy say you are. The game has changed so much in the last 15 years, kids want to play what they see on tv, Wing T/Power I teams winning state titles have become more of the exception rather than the rule(insert but Scott County won it last year remarks here), does that mean this systems are obsolete? not at all, just hard to get the kids excited to play that style anymore, to many Kirk Herbstreits talk about shutting down the run game by loading the box, then you have fans thinking thats all you have to do to shut down the run game when that isnt the case. I want to see Clay go to the power spread look.
We should charge a fine everytime Wayne Napiers name is mentioned on this thread. Get behind Coach Combs and support him. He's going to do what he thinks is best. He knows football, he comes from a brotherhood of football, he has sat under great coaches, and he has hired great assistants. Wayne went to Rock but who cares, everyone needs a team water boy!!! Sorry, I will be the first to put my dollar in the Wayne bucket.
It's going to be a great year, not seeing the Napiers on the sideline will be at least a 14 point increase. Now everytime the Tigers take the field they will be up 14-0 without the Napiers wearing a headset.
Now I don't want to be too out of line but I've got a sneaking suspicion that you're not very fund of the Napiers. Who all has Combs been able to hire as assistants so far?
We can sit here and go back and forth everyday, most people on this site have 0 knowledge of the game of football. Most say they played, when in all reality they wore a Uniform and stood on the sidelines. It was a long time coming for Wayne, he never has proven himself at the high school level. Clay has hired a great coach and he will get results. Get your picnic tables reserved, it's going to be fun.

So... Who all is making up the new Tiger Staff? I am anxious to see what the tigers are holding this year.

My guess would be the older gentleman that used to coach the Tigers.Gene Hensley. He was reportedly in communication with Justin Combs during the entire selection process and was also on the so called search comm.I think he was searching for someone that would let him back on the sidelines. This may explain why there wasn't any interveiws. But anyways, thats all water under the bridge now GO TIGERS
NO INTERVIEWS??? Are you kidding me. I can see that if they are hiring a head coach with a proven track record but they didn't even interview people? MAN

The older gentleman, as you are referring to him, is former Tiger Coach Eugene Hensley, and he is just that, a gentleman. He was a fine coach and if he wanted to be involved in the program any coach should welcome him in. The insinuation that he was just trying to get someone hired that would let him coach is ridiculous. It's almost spring and the fish will be biting, and you'll find Eugene on the lake in his houseboat! He might agree to help some, but I can't see him helping full time. For the record, the program would be lucky to have a man with his character involved.
Someone has no clue what even happened. Combs was interviewed for the position. So were 2 more guys. Stop stirring the pot and let it be. Face it you got a head coach that knows football. Sure not a proven track record but you have to start somewhere. The greatest coaches to coach the game started somewhere. Let it rest. Get behind the team and enjoy having a coach that will push those boys beyond their limits. Oh and his staff is almost complete. Still waiting to see if they will let him bring a guy in from out of county. Doubtful, but he's trying. Wasn't Hensley the most successful coach to coach in Clay County?..darn good coach when I remembered him.
From what I saw on here nobody was interviewed but the coach that got the job. Not trying to stir the pot, but I do know if only 1 or 2 or even 3 where interviewed if this coach doenst work out some heads will roll over no interviews or very few of them! I do agree people in clay need to get behind him.
Combs will do fine if given a chance. Sometimes it is good to hire someone who isn't affiliated with the program. Some times the "good ole boy" system isn't what is best for a sports program. Combs has learned from some of the best, and if given a chance, he will win some ball games at Clay.
From what I read on this post I would be concerned by the fact that there are people already against Combs and he hasn't coached the first practice yet. That is not a good sign for him. But, on the other hand, if a coach gets on these boards and tries to defend himself to every hater out there then he is showing real signs of immaturity as well. Expect to get second guessed by everyone as a head coach. It just comes with the territory. Watch ESPN or any sports talk show and it happens everyday thousands of times. That would be a concern for me as a Tiger fan. Just a thought.

Agree with the message board part. Leave the second-guessing to all the experts on here. Trying to continue a running commentary on here will only cause you more headaches. You got the job. Now, go do something with it.
Combs is making an impact already. Only haters are the one who are not associated with the staff. He has earned a lot of respect already from the ones he needed too
