last time I checked sports are apart of school are they not? some of you want something to be a part of something but don't want to fund it or maybe some of you just would like to see sports taken out of the schools. If you are going to have something then do it right not half A#$!!!!!! That is the problem with a lot of school systems they want to have sports but don't want to fund them. Again both my good friends that are head coaches will tell you that YES football and boys basketball funds all the other sports. I will bet the family jules that the football gate at Clay co. supports all the other small sports and if they gave the gate to football they would be fine BUT AT MOST SCHOOLS IN OUR GREAT STATE they give most of the gate to the other sports and only give a minimal amount to football. FACT!!!!!! Only boys basketball and football make money and at most schools in our hoops state football is the big money maker!!! And yes you UK hoops fans FOOTBALL BLOWS bball out of the water in money made at UK!!!! Another FACT. So how about stop finding ways fot

Sorry for the long one I don't even have a dog in the fight but want to see yall do well. GET BEHIND THIS NEW YOUNG COACH AND IF YOU CLAY CO. PEPS LOVE CLAY CO HELP THESE GUYS OUT!!!!! it does no good know to fire bad fibs.

He may pick them but the admin will approve them. They may surprise the public but not the admin because I think most were picked before the coach was picked.

Insert random local elementary guru with a big mouth that thinks he knows football and those types will make up a good majority of Combs assistants in my opinion. I just don't want to name names but it will come as no surprise to anyone.

Wow I hope assistants weren't chosen before they hired the coach. I know of one from BC and one from belfry are in talks right now but Justin told his father that he didn't know if they will let him bring someone in. That tells me the same thing fellas. Hopefully he gets some decent guys he can trust and can coach them up on some things. Good ol boy club at breathitt too. It's the same everywhere you go seems like. But if Clay does him wrong he will head on down the road and be a redhound I d say. He doesn't read this stuff and I'm glad he doesn't. But if they are gonna do him that way and hire the good ol boys and not bring him in at least a coordinator then that's just wrong. But what is a coach to do if you can't bring you in at least one assistant. Hire from the county. That is when things get hairy. So and so doesn't like so and so and they did this and that back in the day. That's what will be the hard part.

To get a quality asst. coaching staff that has any real knowledge of football,he must be allowed to bring in his own assistants. No one here in county could be of any real value to a decent head coach.I'm sure Clay has guys that could be of assistance at the gradeschool or middleschool level.but we are talking about highschool here.I think coach Combs should have addressed this during talks with the Comm. the past three weeks.
01-16-2015, 11:33 PM
Sorry brothers, I think they will let him bring one or two but I don't see them getting jobs and moving here too. The jobs here don't pay enough to get people to up and move here. This guys is a teacher so that's what makes it doable. I don't think the board will heire anymore people from out of town. We need good assistant and I think he will find some right here in clay. This admin has coach combs best interest and will help him be successful.

@TrueTigerfan the list that the administration gave to him for suggestions of assistant coaches is currently in a sewage drain pipe located at the Sewer Plant. As soon as Combs saw the names he wiped his butt on the list, and flushed it down the toilet after the press conference. Now tell me how can Coach Combs be successful if he can't pick his own Assistants? Thanks for the recommendation, administration.
01-17-2015, 03:18 AM
Hopefully young Combs will see the light with the fine gentlemen In the administration at clay county. Sounds like he is already starting to figure it out. It's sad but his best option when it comes to assistant coaches is to do it all himself. It's bad but if he's a man of principle and wants to do it his way he will be a short timer, I honestly think he sees how it is and will get out on his own accord. Several people that think they should be in control thought they were going to get a young inexperienced guy who could be easily controlled, something tells me combs is hard headed and that won't happen.
01-17-2015, 04:26 AM
He wants a staff that will help him win. My bet is if they won't bring him someone in he's headed to Redhound town. But he may stay and try to do it his way but like you guys said he may be seeing the light. He may be hard headed and just do it all himself. I know he tried to get Some out of town guys in with ALOT of experience and another up and comer but you know how it goes tigers eye. I should have believed ya all along. Told ya he wasnt a push over but he may bring them in a try it and see where it goes. Never know may be a great staff of Clay people. Come back to Breathitt brother!!!!

Don't you just love it when a well thought out plan falls right in place?

The only list Coach Combs was given was a list of who to avoid like the plague, anything else you hear is complete BS being propagated anonymously on message boards by a handful of haters whose guy didn't get the job....and that's a fact Jack.

First off, using facts here only makes people mad at you when they can't formulate a legitimate argument to your facts. Secondly, a list to avoid? Haha, how do you go about making that list? To me that would include everybody that lives in between clay county line. We all know Eugene will try to jump back into the fray with a bunch of his loyal cronies of ex players that think they know ball. We all know who is going to try to be assistants and who is going to try and run things, then when they get a little upset with a decision Combs makes they will be the first to put a knife in combs back. Anything else you hear on here is complete BS being propagated by several members who are loyal to a few members of the hiring committee and/or want to be on the coaching staff because they think they know football and they want to attempt to have control when in reality they could use several years of learning.

I was pulling for Eddie but that don't mean I wish Ill will on Justin. After meeting him, I think he will do fine if he can keep the riff raff off the sidelines out there. Too many guys have been dying to get out there for years and finally think they are going to get their shot under combs.
01-17-2015, 11:26 PM
I would think There are couple guys in the county that could be great asset to Combs and then helpers that would be ok. Trust over knowledge may be the route
01-18-2015, 03:51 PM
You keep talking about Eddie, would he not hep combs as a assistant?
When I think of CC football, coach Hensley was a classes coach and was very successful. Would he not come out and help Combs?

Coach Hensley was a dandy coach for Clay back in the day. I'd say some of his former players wouldn't be too shabby to get either. Will just have to get used to the spread offense.

Highly Doubt Combs would be a REDHOUND! Good Luck at Clay!

Clay has been a spread offense for the majority of the last ten years.. What kind of run game can we expect from Combs in the spread? Lots of Zone or Gap schemes? Mix of both?

Best of luck to Clay County.

I suppose Combs will have to evaluate his personel before deciding on what "Run" variation of the spread he will use. Could do a lot of zone read if the QB is up to it. Could do some midline stuff (if the speed is there) to get around the edge. Draw Counter can work out of the spread as well as the Wildcat. Again, I suppose which variation he will run out of mostly will be determined by which one his players adapt to the best. Who knows, Combs may run out of THE WISHBONE and bring back some of the Terry Wilson Era Triple Option.

Combs better get to work and implement his systems on both sides of the ball! He can't worry about what he does't have, better work with what he has got!

Triple option may be the ticket. I'm thinking Georgia Tech or Nebraska. Lol hope not

I really like the Georgia Tech/Navy Triple, it's a thing of beauty when they get it going. Nebraska wasn't really a triple team for the most part, they ran alot of zone schemes up front, They rarely read the dive as an option. They ran the belly option and load option, even used alot of the ole Delaware Wing T number system on their plays as far as how they determined right and left, not so much in using it as a series, which in turn was simply a reboot of the old Michigan Single Wing terminology. It was a thing of beauty as well during the Osbourne era, I really enjoyed watching the Eric Crouch teams play, that reverse pass to close out the Oklahoma game back in 2000 is one my greatest memories of college football.
I would like to see them go with alot of zone schemes up front, I think to get the full benefit of the inside/outside zone you have to hang your hat on those schemes as a base offense, they are so versatile with everything you do in the backfield while still keeping your scheme the same between the tackles. I also like the Power and Counter scheme to go along with it as an alternative, really like watching the Stanford/Michigan State/Alabama offenses work right now.
Although, If the Tigers get downhill on some good ole mountain Power I, Blocking Down, Kicking out, then I will be on board 100%, too many guys want to be pretty nowadays on offense.
What are we looking at an Odd or Even front on defense? Do you guys think they will Pattern Read in the secondary or are they going to do more dropping to grass? I would like to see a versatile defense with a stack scheme or 425 against the spread with alot of Fire Zone looks and disguising where we are brining our extra rusher while also being able to drop down into an 60 look against the I teams.

Wouldn't take a whole lot of speed, I am sure Sexton could handle it, on Midline are you talking about reading the 3 and have the quarterback pull and replace on a keep read? or are you talking about running it more like a true triple look and getting a pitch phase off of it? If we commit to midline, I would like to see us run ISV and OSV as well to give us a complete look to attack multiple points along the line. Do we have a full back that can break it up the gut on the midline?
