They have a speed demon Davonte Robinson, may be the fastest kid in state, runs a laser timed low 4.4. Clip below is impressive.

So looking for belfry to try burn the clock with 3 yards and cloud off dust , good luck belfry
I'm far more concerned with them running, and the short pop passes and dink and dunk stuff. Will they go long? Yeah if they can, but they want athletes in space and I think they'll try to sweep and screen us to death

I think they will have several blemishes but will be battle tested by end of the season for sure.

Alcoa beats everybody besides Maryville nicker:

Richlands was a pass oriented team and blistered the other teams there except for the Pirates. Good solid pass defense. It's the speed that HC may bring that worries me. Mr. Bell from a couple years ago ran all over us. Let's hope they don't have another one of him. All in all I'm confident that belfry will be able to move the ball and get their fair share of scores. If HC comes with a ton of speed they could get behind the defense on long passes. Should be an interesting game.
Elijah Bell was tough. not sure if they have another one of him or not

They have 2 RBs with D1 capabilities. Lightening fast and football smart. Their QB can thread a needle with his passing. This will be a great opportunity for Belfry. They will know if and where they need to improve. I haven't heard much about Henry Clay's size and strength on the lines, so that tells me that could be their Achilles heel.

Sullivan Simpson (coaches son) is a big o-lineman that is pretty highly touted. I think he goes 6'3" 280. I am not sure what else they have. The only information I have is from 27 teams in 27 days by WKYT.
I haven't read anything on Henry Clay's scrimmages.

Talked with one of the Belfry assistant coaches last night and his words were "they are really good" , meaning HC of course. That is no big enlightening revelation, but Belfry knows their task is very difficult Friday night. HC, IMO, is a real dark horse in 6A this year.

Not to mention Southwestern is trending upwards, Harlan County will come to fight, and Christian Academy of Knoxville should have a VERY strong team. Cole Smith, their QB, was the best I saw last year and he was only a freshman.
I honestly think Belfry will handle Johnson Central this year. Its the only other team they play that I feel remotely suspicious about, with SW having just a dab of hope. HC is probably fielding there worst team since they opened, and if Belfry stays healthy and plays well, I don't see them having and problems.
Nobody in the 3A east will touch Belfry, and its looking like the West may be in worse shape.
It has to be a good feeling knowing your playoff competition is weaker than your regular season competition.

FYI, Henry Clay apparently scrimmaged Woodford County and won 55-0. It was 35-0 in the Varsity portion.
For the Belfry underclassmen with dreams of playing at the next level (Horton, Bentley, Corbett, etc) this is what I like to call a "Credibility Highlight Game"
In the world of recruiting if you come from the State of Kentucky, particularly East KY, you already have a strike against you due to the perceived level of competition. Highlight videos are taken with a bit of prejudice as a result.
Henry Clay though has some clout. Henry Clay is in elite company along with Trinity and St. X as probably being the most consistent producer of Major D-1 talent and even NFL talent (Minniefield and Boyd most recently). Having a big game versuses the Devils instantly adds credibility to your highlight video.

I think Belfry will miss Sani on both sides of the ball in this one. Breaking in a new QB against Henry Clay will be a tough task. I think Belfry will own 3A this year, but the overall team speed of HC will be to much in this early season match up. I don't think Belfry has the speed on the edges to stop the HC offense.
HC 35
Belfry 21
Good luck Pirates. I'm picking against you, but pulling for you.

Actually the edges is where we have our speed...I agree they got a couple fast kids, that run a 4.4....well we got a few that run 4.6 maybe a 4.5 on a good day...that's not that big of a difference...it's easy to be fast on a track running by yourself...but when you put 22 people spread out in a 50 yard wide area it tends to be a little hard to be that fast...the clip above where the kid ran down the Scott county player...he won't catch Keaton Taylor,X Willis or Cam Catron in that same situation...you can guarantee that...and past history shows that good running backs that play both ways against US tend to get a little worn down by the second half...ask, Bourbon County...

Me too, But with TJ Dotson, Austin Hall, at DE and X Willis and Keaton Taylor at corners that's pretty hard to get outside of...now if they turn it in and the linebackers are not there that's a different story...but Stanley and singer have decent speed, as well as Austin Hatfield

I'm not worried about Belfry getting their hands on them at the edge...my biggest concern is actually making the tackle when they get there.
Every year it is the same song and dance:
"Central has too much speed for Belfry"
"Bourbon County has too much speed for Belfry"
Yet, typically Belfry doesn't have a problem actually stringing the plays out. The problem comes when they miss a tackle and pursuit hasn't caught the play. That's what happened in 2007 vs. Central (2 long TD runs from broken tackles at the LOS), that's what happened vs. Ace Wales in 2010 (2-3 runs where Belfry actually hit him in the backfield but he broke it), and it's what happened vs. Henry Clay in 2012 (Missed tackles on a screen pass and letting the back reverse field on a run).
Brent Holman and Kentayvous Hopkins were as fast as nearly anyone Henry Clay will run, but when Belfry hit those guys they locked up and made the tackle. Same thing the past two meetings with Central where Belfry essentially shut down their running game.
To me that's all the run defense comes down to Friday. Sound tackling.
Now the passing game is a whole 'nother story.... same for the Kick Return game. My hope is Wellman doesn't give them a chance on punt returns and Woolum is successful at either reaching the endzone or directional kicking.
