Mayfield 2010 vs. Pikeville 1987
#61
:thatsfunn
#62
I can see a new thread in the making next year about the best 2A team of all time. :lmao:
#63
Can anybody name the smallest Top ten 1A teams in the state that won State Championship. Confusederiously:
#64
And I mean smallest team with enrollment..:please:
#65
^Going way back Lynch would have to be in there I would think.
#66
Again way back Elkhorn City.

Just to add to the thread more video on the '87 team:

I liked the idea. A shame you all cannot play nice lol.

I definitely am biased and think PHS would put it out, but that is not a discredit to any Mayfield team. That PHS team was just a great group.

Mayfield is leaps and bounds a better program, but PHS is not too shabby. Three State Titles, Three Runner-ups, 20 regional titles, etc... The answer to what has PHS done since the late 80's? Well, the 1990's saw PHS in the State Semis 1991 (State Title game as well), 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999 (Still sickening PHS didn't win a title in 99, clear cut 1 or 2 in 99). And then 3 times in the new millennium: 2000, 2004, and 2011. A lot of schools would like to boast those results in a 24 year period. Of course, it pales in comparison to the Mayfields, Danvilles, Beechwoods of the world in that 24 years, but respectable nonetheless.

Elkhorn City, Ky. won it in 1964.

One of the best videos. According to that site Hatz referred to, Pineville was the #5 rated team in 1A and Pikeville had 56 points on the board midway through the 3rd. Loved the barking at the end, that's a classic.

I guess my point is not getting through. My point is that no one can actually determine who would win. Your point of view is that they would have won because they were nationally ranked. That and they were fast. My point of view is they were in a different era and to be quiet honest, in our day the bits didn't grow quiet as big. Then you seem to forget that we were very fast at every position as well. That and as someone pointed out, our very mobile line weighed about 30 lbs per player more. It is really irrelevant though. They were both very good and well deserving state champions.
#71
Nationally ranked is the least of the reasons. And your line wasn't 30lbs bigger. I'm done here, no doubt in my mind Pikeville 1987 would have their way with Mayfield 2010. No doubt whatsoever.

Nationally ranked?? HAHHA. By whom ? Prove it. A class 1a team ranked 12th overall(not bad) in the state is not going to be ranked nationally. If you had said Pikeville had a very good team and it would have been a good match up with Mayfield, I might buy that. To say they were the best team in the state, you lose all creditability.

Good post. Pikeville has had some nice teams but lets not get too carried away. I am sure the 87 team was a good group and I don't know how they would stack up against the more modern teams. The 78 Mayfield team was ranked #1 overall in the state but they had 175lb guards and 200lb tackles, I don't think they would beat some later Mayfield teams. Pikeville had 12th ranking in lit ratings, I would find it very hard to believe they would have a national ranking. They rank teams now no matter where you play. Pikeville had a good team for its era....leave it at that.

You have no clue about that of which you speak. It's not just Pikeville fans saying that about the 87 team, it was people from all over then and now. Read EKUAlum05's post, he is a diehard Belfry fan. You have no clue and you just don't want to believe it. But tons of people know it. Leave it at that.Confusedhh:

Wow, a few people on BGR. What other people?.... nobody talks about Pikeville football but this forum. I can see it now in some small diner in the Pikeville area from the old timers," we had the best team in the state, nationally ranked, I know we did, just ask Billy Bob here".
#76
Oops, Pikeville was rated higher than Mayfield last Litratings 1994. Wow that's a bunch of years.

Clueless. You just don't want to know.Confusednicker:

Wow, did you guys realize Pikeville was ranked ahead of Mayfield for the last Litratings of 2004? Just wow.
#79
I found a national high school football ranking database site. I don't know how high Pikeville was supposed to be ranked but this site only shows the top 20 and Pikeville is not listed. The only KY team to break the top 20 in the years of 87, 88, and 89 was Louisville Trinity in 89.

^Go to bottom left at National sports news service. It goes form 1959 to 2000.^
#81
Guys, really, what does it matter? Pikeville has had some great teams and at many times been better than us. We have had some great teams and at many times been better than them. It is inmaterial which of each era we "think" is better than the best of the other eras.

Yeah i think its time to end this debate. Jetpilot give up while you still have some credibility. When you say nationally ranked it sounds like you are claiming top 25. Besides no 12th ranked team in kentucky would be in the top 1000 nationally. By maxpreps ive seen mayfield be around 8 or 9 in the state, but there national rank was around 800, and i dont consider that being nationally ranked, but i guess you could argue every team is nationally ranked by that site, i think fulton city was around 15000 last year does that make them ranked in your eyes. It was fun to poke at eachother, but quit givin false information. My guess is that someone heard about them being ranked in the the top 25 in the state, but as the story kept getting told someone got mixed up and said nationally ranked then everyone started believing it. I bet they was a good team, but probably no better than the 92 danville team that ive heard belfry fans say was the best they ever seen.

Interesting match-up.... I am probably one of the very few people posting here that actually saw both teams play. You have a tale of two different teams from two different eras. Mayfield was super fast and threw the ball very well. Pikeville was big, strong, and fast in the backfield, they could also throw when they needed to. Pikeville had several kids to play at the next level from that squad. I believe it would be a very high scoring game, Pikeville would have problems with the air attack, and I believe that Mayfield would have problems with Pikeville's ground attack. My prediction:

Pikeville 56
Mayfield 49

My 2 cents is that Pikeville would win fairly easily, and I also want to point out the irony of someone from Mayfield continuing to take jabs at EKY.

Keep your 2 cents Mr. Potato Head...You don't know just like everyone else.

Jet pilot is mia ever since it was exposed that pikeville was not nationally ranked. I don't blame him that's an embarrassing mix up to confuse nationally ranked for being ranked 12th in Kentucky, guess I'll leave this thread as its no longer fun with him missing.
#88
Well I believe there is 6 that I know of from the 10 team playing at the next level. There is 1 that gave it up for less productive things. There is 1 other that just didn't want what schools offered. There is another that was called up by UL coaches to try out for qb after his freshman year. He did and just didn't make the cut.
#89
Peter measuring threads like these proves absolutely nothing. Both teams were without a doubt good but some of you are getting ridiculous.
#90
I guess we can all think that our best was better than anyone else's best. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but, an opinion does not make it fact.
