13th region 2013/14
#31
Harlan did a good job, and has a nice gym....but it is not enough to offset the drive.

AND like most of the casual fans this year, you don't have to make that drive.
#32
If im not mistaken, the region will be at the Arena for the next 15 years unless someone else decides to host it at a different venue. Maybe a Harlan or mboro would like to host it at Harlan County, but its unlikely.

You can expect the arena for a long time to come.
#33
Offset the drive for who? You? Look it wasn't broke when we used to have it at the high schools with much better basketball atmosphere, so why try to fix it just to satisfy just a few? THERE IS NO GOOD ATMOSPHERE AT THE ARENA!!!! And NOBODY can dispute that.

I'd say it will be at The Arena most years. My guess is Harlan will host it at HCHS in 2017. It's a 5-mile drive compared to 65 miles.

I can fully understand your argument, and agree that the high schools are better, but what are you going to do when every school except HCHS voted to have it at the arena?
It more or less comes down to the fact that the arena will hold any crowd the tourney will ever bring, and schools dont have to put up with it being on campus so school adminstrators love it, so of course they'll never vote it down.

I know its a little drive for HCHS and other schools, but to be quite honest, its not that horrible, it just so happens HCHS has the furthest drive of all the schools in the region. Almost all the other schools in Bell, Laurel, Clay, Jackson, and Whitley Counties can be there in 30-45 minutes tops.

Harlan county had a beautiful facility that I wish was centrally located. Unfortunately it isn't! I know of multiple people who wouldn't or couldn't make the games this year because it was in Harlan or should I say Baxter. The biggest reason I am an advocate of the arena is because while the fans are feeling disconnected the players feel big time. Ask the players and I bet 90% that have played in the arena wil tell you his it made the event feel big time! I appreciate the tournament thus year being in Harlan and I think they did a great job but the tournament is for the players not the people sitting in the stands!

Whos next to host, Jackson, then Knox?
#38
Someone in the 50th.
#39
I thought Whitley hosted it at the Arena two years ago....I don't think it is the 50th turn. Not sure though.
#40
Shelton and Griffith are both very good but were hidden on a team which seemed rudderless. 21 game schedule and a lack of a consistent effort by a team. They also seem more dedicated to football in which they both standout.

I guess that's right then:
North 2010
Whitley 2011
Barbourville 2012
Harlan County 2013

Jackson County 2014
50th District (maybe Williamsburg) 2015
Lynn Camp (?) 2016
Harlan 2017

Jackson Co will host the regional tourney next year. Very positive it will be back at the arena.

I haven't heard any figures concerning how the "pay out" to participating and non participating teams was this year compared to previous years. Does anyone know those figures?
#44
I believe I read some where last year that in order for Harlan to host this year that they had to come up with the same pay out that the arena had been paying all schools. Which if I'm not mistaken it was $1500 per school in the region. I may be wrong but it pretty sure I read that in the paper last year.
#45
I believe that's the correct number, plus shares for the participating teams.

That looks right.
I was pretty sure Jackson had it next.
It will be Williamsburg after that, and then I thought it was Knox's turn, because K is before L (lynn camp) and P (Pineville).
Shouldnt Middlesboro be the next team out of the 52nd?
#47
I think this is the rotation for the 52nd:

Bell County - 2009
Harlan County - 2013
Harlan - 2017
Middlesboro - 2021

Leave it to the 52nd to not get the whole alphabetical order thing right Confusednicker:

I think Harlan County = Cawood, Cumberland, and Evarts. Each would have been between Bell and Harlan.

I guess I'm slow on this one, but isn't Harlan County, Harlan Independent and Middlesboro the right order?

I didnt think they used independant or public when going by the rotation, just the first.
For example, Harlan, Harlan County.

I could be wrong though. If they do use independant, than you are correct.
#52
My point was that I thought Harlan County, which replaced the other three schools, may have stayed in the same position in the rotation. Is the rotation the same for the district?

It's more convienient for me to attend the tournament at the Arena. However, I find it curious that the drive from Harlan to Corbin to attend a tournament at the Arena is so much shorter than driving from Corbin to Harlan to attend the tournament at HCHS.

Exactly.

I agree. These kids could be very good, but the coach doesn't seem to want to develop any of the other players. They won't get their due recognition until the team starts winning and they won't win until the other kids develop. The coach stuck with a 7 man rotation all year, which is fine if those 7 are getting the job done, but when the team is struggling why not develop some of the other kids. Especially the big kids. Rebounding was a glaring weakness. With a 3 guard lineup and no starter over 6 foot you would think the 2 big guys on the bench would have gotten more of a chance.

We lost 2 big kids that could have helped this team, because the coach wouldnt play them. Night after night we send out players to fill one of our 5 spots, and we end up with 10 turnovers,2 points and 2 rebounds for that spot. By not playing a big Sizemore is forced to play inside and rebound and he is just too small.if the coach would have played one of the bigs, moved Sizemore to a wing then this team has 3 threats on the offensive end and makes it hard for teams to defend. Oh we'll what the hell do I know

Exactly. Sizemore's game took a big hit this season. He needs to be on the wing. He has the strength to play inside but just isn't tall enought to play against guys 4-6 inches taller. Put the Dunn kid in and let him move to his natural position. Then we have three kids that can score and become much more competitive. Dunn is raw, but if he never gets a chance he will never develop and could at least rebound while he was learning.

I agree I have been impressed with dunn, came in at pineville played great in the first half, then did not enter the second half until 2minutes to go in the game. How good would Dunn have been if they would have started developing him early in the year. If the coach dont develop a big man we will not win, even with all that talent.

You can't win with 140 lb 4's. Especially if they can't handle the ball, defend, rebound or score. When the kid you start at the 4 has less than 5 two point baskets for the season you are not going to win.

That's what I'm saying. Play Dunn at the 5 and move Sizemore to the 4. Sizemore adds 6-8 points to his average and the other team has to worry about another scoring threat. Of course this would all be mute if Andrew could get healthy. Hope for the best for that kid.
