where is the regional tourney at next year? is Corbin going to be that down? I know Tony does a great job down there and was down this year, just not normal for them to stay down?

Those teams that spent the majority of the year in the middle of the pack will try to make their way up front. Knox, Jackson, Bell, Middlesboro, etc. By years end, I expect Clay County to contend once again and they have the number one player in the region. Knox is definitely my number 1 though with Jackson second, as of now. We all know things can change quickly over the summer.

Pretty good overall, but I think Corbin will be better than Middlesboro. Other than Poindexter and Foister, who do you like for Middlesboro?
03-12-2013, 02:17 PM
My whole deal with Middlesboro is that I like their coach. He coaches extremely hard. Poindexter and Foister are both top 10 players in my opinion. I don't see anybody returning from Corbin that I would classify as a top 10-15 player. They both lost 4-5 seniors so I give Middlesboro a nod because I think they bring more talent back with those two.
03-12-2013, 03:12 PM
Middlesboro could be pretty good and Thompson has done a great job, but they have a lot of question marks.
If it were two-on-two I may agree, but I think Corbin is close with Goins and Hill as their top two players and they are a lot deeper. Their JV team in 2011 was 19-1 with five sophomores who will be seniors next year (Goins, Waddle, Henson, Shelton, Johnson).
I think the All A will be real interesting. Jackson is the favorite, but Middlesboro, Harlan, Barbourville and Williamsburg could all be pretty good and Pineville can rebuild around Collett and Ford. I don't consider transfer talk at this point either, but you never know about Lynn Camp.

Good lists. HDE, I thought Goins was a senior this year. My mistake. That throws Corbin up to 5-6 at worst. They will have some nice role players as well and Pietrowski always has them competitive. If Middlesboro has anything to go along with Foister and Poindexter they will be among the best teams.

Ill leave you all alone and head to the girls bball forum

Your list looks good HDE, but the Potter kid has to be in the top 5. I could also see the Miller kid from Harlan Co. being one of the top 5 players in the region next year. He has developed into a very nice player.
03-13-2013, 06:33 AM
I heard that Miller was transferring from Harlan Co. to Scott Co. or Montgomery Co. next season.
03-13-2013, 07:42 AM
Good list!! IMO I think barring any injuries Barger will be the best player in the region. Only time will tell, there is a lot that can happen between now and then.

I didn't hear that this was where he was going, but I did hear that he was looking for a place to play.

Corbin won despite the lack of talent this year. They will continue to win next year because they have a good core of role players again. McDaniel, Allen, and Barger will be the best players. Knox and Clay will be the best teams.

Not sure why you wouldn't put Griffith from Williamsburg in the mix? Shelton also.
03-13-2013, 03:33 PM
If you thought region was wide open this year, just wait until next year. Knox, Jackson, and Bell stand out as the favorites but anyone 3-10 could be a surprise and win region.
03-13-2013, 03:49 PM
Footballfever, I think Griffith could be a top 10 player, I would rank him at #11 preseason and Shelton top 15.

It's hard to get a lot of attention when you only win two games inside the region. There's some talent there, but I'm sure a lot of people didn't see them play.
What was the deal with Williamsburg only playing 21 games last year? That doesn't make any sense to me.
03-13-2013, 10:58 PM
Clay should be in top 5 with number one player in the region in McDaniel.

Williamsburg has some talanted kids, but there are a few that did not play. The Basketball coach scheduled around football (several of his kids play and go deep into the playoffs). I am not sure how motivated Williamsburg is to have a serious basketball program. A lot of people around the program questioned why they only played that few games. Had they played more they could have been better, they were starting to play much better at the end of the season but just did not have enough time to get as good as they needed to get to compete.
You look at the other teams in that district and they all played well over 30 games, that is a huge diffence.
Coupled with the fact that they seem lukewarm on basketball and having to schedule around football, and a less than motivated support at times, I just don't see them breaking into the top ten. There will be nights that they compete and on sheer talant they may beat a few good teams but won't be consistant enough to be a top ten team.

You are 100% correct with this post. Its a complete joke to only schedule 21 games especially with this bunch of talented kids.

Jackson Co, Bell Co, and Knox Central are the top three and could flipflop at anytime. Corbin, Harlan Co, Clay Co, North and South Laurel will be a notch below those three but all 5 will be very evenly matched. Its adds up to be another season where 7-8 different teams could win the region, but will be another one and done at Rupp for the 13th. There is some very good young talent coming up in this region and hopefully they will be able to get the 13th back to being able to compete again. 2008 was the last close game the 13th had at the sweet 16. South Laurel lost to Hazard 50-47. Corbin did play Lou Eastern fairly close in 2009 but ended up losing by 14. I felt Corbin was actually a better team than Eastern.

1. Knox Central (good talant but seems to choke at tourny time)
2. Jackson County (fast, good shooting team)
3. Bell County (good coaching, good talant)
4. Clay County (McDaniel, nuff said)
5. Corbin (Tony Petrowski, nuff said)
6. Harlan County (Good Talant returning)
7. North Laurel (solid coach, solid talant)
8. South Laurel (sliding farther down every year)
9. Middlesboro (Athletic kids who love to run)
10. Barbourville (Dinky, nuff said)
Best of the Rest (in no order):
Whitley County (impressive group of Soph., decent coach)
Williamsburg (impressive couple of players, need more help)
Pineville (JD Strange)
Harlan (learning to compete)
2. Jackson County (fast, good shooting team)
3. Bell County (good coaching, good talant)
