Half these kids have never seen any meaningful playing time. I'd like to think they'll have a great year next year, too, but I don't believe annointing them as title winners or 1st team all-staters will help their cause.
I disagree with "first team all state" but most of the guys mentioned are pretty good ballplayers. Only the first four and MAYBE Davontae have the "Wow" factor, but I expect all of them to get alot of meaningful playing time and be solid before it's all over with.

I know its very hard to be first team all-state and not likely, but I still feel that if Justin Johnson gets 10-15 carries a game over 14 games and belfry meets expectations of going back to the state title game and hopefully winning then yes I feel he will have a good shot at it. If you dont count the RB's that were on his own team this past year I would argue that besides for #1 from Garrard and Ace from Central he was as good as any RB in "AAA". (Not The Whole State for the people who pick and choose what they decipher "Boondock Saint"). As for Warren at QB, I feel if he gets to throw the ball 10-15 times a game and we win the tiltle he also would have a shot at all-state. The kid from Breathitt and the kid from Garrard are gonna also be very good and Im sure there's more out west thats very good, but I know his talent and work ethic better than anyone and don't underestimate Sani. long_time_pirate Wrote:If you don't mind, who do you coach for and have you ever coached in a state championship? I can tell you one thing, I promise you there WAS speed on that field and evidently you didn't pay too much attention to some of the playmakers. Sorry, just had to voice my opinion on your post and was curious as to your resume details.
I don't mind you asking those questions at all. I am not a coach and I never coached in a state championship. If that makes me unqualified to make my observations on a game, than so be it. I guess in your eyes then I'm unqualified. I have to assume that countless other posters are likewise unqualified to post their observations. I thought the Belfry players played extremely hard, played great defense and gave it their all on the field. Am I likewise unqualified to have such observations because I'm not a coach? Perhaps your observation about there being SPEED on the field Saturday is also unqualified unless you are a coach and coached in a state championship. Are you a coach and have you coached in a state championship game?
I thought I was being as respectful as one could be towards Coach Haywood. While not a coach, I do think I know enough about the game to make the observations I made. I did play the game in high school. Good enough to make first team All State by both the coaches and the sports writers. Good enough to play the game in college where I made first team All Conference. I have two sons who both made All State in high school (I doubt many folks can say not only were they All State in high school but both of their sons were also). I follow the game very, very closely to this day. Well enough to be asked to be involved in the production of the state games by the KHSAA due to my knowledge of the game. I actually paid quite close attention to the game and the players in it. I know the game. I'm sorry if that comes across as arrogant, but since you were questioning my credentials to make observations, there they are.
No. 22 for Belfry (Howie Dotson) has nice speed, I'll give you that. Justin Johnson (No. 28 for Belfry when Belfry wears red jerseys, but No. 12 when they wear white due to the fact the white No. 28 jersey needed to be cut off of him early in the year due to an injury; yeah I know that much about Belfry) also has nice speed. But Belfry did not have the speed needed to get outside of Central using the flex bone. It just didn't. Which is why Belfry in fact did not get outside of Central during the game.
I obviously touched a wound that was still too fresh and I genuinely apologize for doing so. As stated, I'm a big fan of the Belfry program. I publicly predicted before the game that Belfry would win. Heck, one of the radio announcers for the game even mentioned (without stating my name) that I predicted Belfry would win. I'm a big fan of Coach Haywood. The man is a legend and rightly so. But I'm not sure I can go so far as to state the man never makes a mistake. There has only been one perfect person ever walk this earth. Even the best of coaches make mistakes. The coach of the program I support (Highlands) made a time management mistake towards the end of the first half of the state game this year and he has coached and his teams have won 10 state championship games now. It happens to even the best of coaches.
I just think that the Belfry coaches need to step back and evaluate their O for 2012. It's a great O, but since they've now been beaten by Central the last 3 times they've made it to the state game and scored no more than 17 points in any of those three games, is it being unreasonably harsh or unfair to ask the questions that I have? I hope not. If you feel differently, I apologize to you. Trust me no offense or disrespect was meant to you, the Belfry program, the Belfry fans, the Belfry players and certainly not the Belfry coaches. I'm just asking if the O needs to be modified to be able to beat Central in future state games and pointing out what I observed in last Saturday's game that supports my observation that it does need to be modified some. Lordy, I'm not suggesting Belfry abandon the run and start throwing the ball 75% of the time. I want Belfry to win state next year; just like I wanted them to win it this year.

Lets look back at what you said, and then tell me who is calling out kids.
"I agree with some of your suggestions but not Madison Ghormely at fullback. LB only for Madison, i remember his only carry this year he fumbled. (Bad idea)." - This kid just played his heart out at LB all year, gets one carry during the season and fumbles, yet you in all of your infinite wisdon say he doesn't deserve a shot at FB. Nice call.
"In my opinion I would move joey duty over to offense and play him at the guard position next year and you would be better than you were this year. Its no disrespect to john (who done a great job) but joey is twice the ball player he is." - Thinking this and saying this on a public forum are two very different things. John Duty earned enough respect from me to never worry about being called a lesser player than his brother on an open forum. Again, nice call.
"I would echo the same about the fields boys as I did the duty boys, Keagan was great at center but Zach has always been the better of the two. Zach fields is a beast on the football field and no one can deny that." - This one is even more ridiculous. You won't find a tougher, more hardnosed, and down to earth kid than Keagan Fields. Still, you find the audacity to say he isn't anywhere near the player his brother is, while his brother didn't even have the opportunity to suit up this year. Yet again, nice call.
These 3 kids are still in high school, just finished representing their schools with pride, dignity, and heart, but you find a way to give them backhanded compliments. Whats harder to believe than that is the fact that you call me an untrue BHS fan because I'm not tooting the horns of unproven players.
I hope the future team works their tails off, goes 30-0 over 2 years with 2 state titles (both against Central), and are humble enough to thank God they got the chance to go against these guys you call inferior each and everday in practice for making them better ballplayers.

charlie22,
We are on the same wavelength. I have actually wondered what would happen if Belfry operated out of the pistol with Warren next year. The biggest issue with Belfry trying to pass is how the QB has to do it. Even in obvious passing situations the Pirates are still running play action and the QB is not looking downfield until a full 2 or 3 seconds as he carries his playfakes out of the drop. By the time he looks up field the pass rush is on him and he has to make a decision immediately which often results in throwing to a set receiver.
When Belfry does pass typically you will always see an unguarded guy somewhere on the field. If the QB doesn't have time to find him it is all for not. The Bretahitt game had a perfect illustration of this. The Pirates had just gotten the ball from a beautiful defensive play by Warren in Bobcat territory and had a chance to open a 2 TD lead before the half. Williams drops to pass and gets pressured, he throws down the field and the ball is intercepted. On the same play Justin Johnson is in the flat with noone around him for 10-15 yards. If Williams dumps it to him, Johnson gets a big gain and the Pirates are set up for a TD. No fault to Williams, he didn't have time and was throwing to a spot instead of taking a sack.
The pistol would allow Belfry to still use motion and use multiple backs, but it would give the QB more time to see downfield and know where pressure is coming from.

Here is what you should do if that's really how you feel, and if it is in fact a friendly gesture.
Go to Belfry High School when the last bell rings, wait on those 3 particular kids and tell them face-to-face exactly what you've said on here.
Look John in the eye and tell him, "you played really well, but Joey is going to be better than you before he graduates".
Look Keagan in the eye and tell him "Keagan, you played your heart out, but when Zach gets up here everybody will forget about Keagan being the starting center for two state title games."
Tell Madison, and his dad if you're feeling froggy, that "hey, you did a pretty good job at LB this year, but I really don't even think you should attempt to be a FB, you just don't have it in you."
If you really feel comfortable saying that to a kid's face, then it is ok to say it on here. But you and I both know you wouldn't.

You took a great thread about Belfry's future and turned it into a 1 on 1 argument with someone's opinion. "Got an opinion" said nothing wrong at all, they just stated there opinion. The truth is, ask 100 people at Belfry there thoughts on those 3 comments, wanna guess how many would agree..100!! Now do us all a favor, those of us who represent Belfry with some class, crawl back in that hole you came from, after you wash that dirty mouth of yours!

I know the fields and the dutys very well and I have made the comment to joey and zack in front of them and there families that if they work hard they can be even better than there big brothers. ( I am sure they would rather here you tell them that they are not! That wouldnt hurt there feelings, that would make them feel real good). As for madison and his dad, I am friends with them also. charlie22 Wrote:When I watched Belfry this past Saturday, I thought the same as the bolded and wondered: is that the best O to beat Central? I know the flex bone helps get the RBs outside quicker, but I wonder if Belfry will ever have the speed to get outside Central even using the flex bone. They certainly didn't have it this year. Watching the game, I thought Belfry might have been better off running out of the I more often to pound the middle and then use play action passes to the TEs and SE when the LBers start cheating to stop the run. If you feel you need to run wide to keep Central honest, bring the wing in motion and run a jet sweep type play, or pitch the ball to the TB and use the RB as a lead blocker.
I have a ton of respect for Coach Haywood. His resume speaks for itself. I'm almost embarrassed to be second guessing him. But I've posted that Johnson Central's O may work fine against a lot of teams but it has to be adjusted to beat Highlands and I need to be consistent: should Belfry adjust it's O in anticipation of meeting Central in the state game? Or would such adjustments result in Belfry not even making it to the state game?
I wasn't going to bring up my thoughts until I saw you state what I bolded.
I wondered in a post before the state championship if Belfry would have been better to go back to the tradition bone or the broken bone to help neutralize Central's speed. The flex bone just requires to much east to west running to get to the outside against a defense that has speed at every position. I picked the tradition bone over a I-formation like you mentioned because all of these kids have ran it before and know it well. It would not have been difficult for them to pick in a week.
Let me state for the record and those who do not like dialogue about options to attack your opponent. I am as big a Coach Haywood supporter as you'll find on Pond Creek. I would not have wanted to play for anyone else and hope my son can spend 4yrs learning from him. Coach Haywood has forgotten more about the game than the collective bgr poster will learn in a lifetime. This is just thinking outloud. GB squared.

I believe this team has the potential to be better than the 2011 team but I look for them to stumble some early looking for their idenity. The soph and jr classes provided many starters and depth that the sr class lack but what the sr class lacked in quanitity they more than made up for in quality. Trey Willis,Josh Dixon, and Gary Runyon were game changers. Your only proven underclassman playmakers were JJ on offense and Sani on defense. JJ is likely to find a tougher row to hole next year without Trey requiring so much of the defense attention. He will be fine but it's going to be an adjustment. Sani is likely not to play defense next. The begin of the season will be a learn process and could result in some dare I say loses.
I believe the offense will be different next year. When Sani was in the 8th grade they ran some spread. This will suit their talents better next year but will they run it as their primary offense or just a wrinkle like the Tomcat in 09.
Alot of ? to be answered in 2012 not to mention rumors of transfers in and even transfers out. Stay tuned for another exciting season of DALLAS, I mean BELFRY.

Transfers in and transfers out??
I've heard rumors that Johnson and Pugh from Pike Central may be possible transfers in. Along with a few from Mingo Central.
Also heard that Warren, Carr, and Dari have been approached. Surely this is just rumor, can't see these boy's leaving Belfry.

Let me put this to you simple guys plainly.
If I had two sons at Belfry High School, and you compliment one by saying he is a little better than the other, or will be better than the other, only one thing will happen.
I won't thank you for the compliment towards one of my children, I will without hesitation punch you square in the mouth repeatedly for hurting my other child's feelings. It's that damn simple.
And I say again, if you were not on the computer the wording in your comparisons would not be the same. In an actual, verbal and physical conversation discretion would be used as to not offend the person you are having a conversation with. When talking about high school kids on a message board that kind of discretion should be used. Say want you want about the president, professional athletes, even the local magistrate, but tread lightly when discussing a child.

We have several kids from the "Surrounding area". Most have been playing in our system since the 5th and 6th grades. Jealousy will get you nowhere. We do not call it recruiting when kids come to our school on their own because they want to have classy quality coaching and to be a part of a classy successful program.

Let me put it straight out.
On offense, there are 7 slots to be filled from the loss of "starters"-K. Fields, T. Williams, H.Dotson, J. Nelson, J. Duty, J. Dixon, T. Willis and (8) if you want to count J. Aldana
On defense there are 2 that I can think of off the top of my head- H. Dotson, J. Aldana, And there are probably more I'm just throwin this out off the top of my head.
If there are some out there that think those listed could have been replaced on the line or on the field this year, something is dead wrong! Those kids played their asses off and deserve some credit! Granted, next year is coming up and the talent Belfry has will shock a LOT and I do mean a LOT of people but in NO form or fashion were some of the kids listed in this thread (having calls to come somewhere else) ready to play the game we played Saturday. I'm sorry if that offends but the boys that were on the field played one hell of a game and deserve some credit instead of being "second-guessed" by those who feel the need to belittle! Good luck BHS on your upcoming season in 2012.... bring it home boys!!! But do remember all those before you and do it for them as well as yourself, the fans, and glory of knowing you've worked your asses off to GET where your brothers, dads, uncles, cousins, and friends have been!

Eli played 2 games as corner. He played for Zack before the Garrad game so I am going to make the assumption that Haywood can and did 'put up' with Eli's skills as corner. For your sake and your faulty opinions, go to KSHS and look at Belfry's stats and see what Haywood has to put up with in 2012. I would also like to add that his stats were earned during the beginning of the game not when the starters were pulled.

#29 did a good job with the exception of a play or two. Looks athletic and I think he will do well with more snaps.
Anyone have any idea on the schedule next season? If so, please post it up on here.
I think the defense will be as good or perhaps better than this season. 3 of 4 linebackers returning (who will only get better), very good players in the secondary (Robinson, Thacker, Huddle, Warren "if needed"); and on the d-line look for Barnes to draw double teams all season, with the other guys - Duty, Hatfield, May, May, etc to get penetration on a consistent basis.
That defense ^ will get teams fits, and give the offense time to find its footing. I for one and very excited to see Warren get his shot at QB. I think he will be dynamic.
Interesting to see how the roster will look in week 0 next season. Addition can be good, but I would be MORE THAN PLEASED to see that everyone just comes back!

Schedule: Flip home and aways and change Pike County Bowl to Scott County or Henderson County. Not sure if that will be at Belfry or Shelby Valley. Have heard they're trying to do away with having it at SVHS due to low attendance.

Scott County or Henderson Co? That is great!
So 2 6A teams on the docket. Love it. Belfry will have their hands full handle Henry Clay's Devion Jackson next year too.

I suppose everyone is off to roundball season. Fair enough.
Still SUPER happy to hear Scott Co. is on the schedule. How good for 3A would it be for Belfry to beat the reigning 6A runner up? I think it would be a tough challenge, especially early in the season as it seems it would be. Still, I think the pirates would have a punchers chance.

Little update from Pond Creek: Sani Warren has been arranging player-led throwing sessions a few times a week with a good number of players showing up. Excellent news and leadership from him. Can't be more excited to hear that!
