I think this would be the best thing for High School Football in Kentucky. IMO. I would like it anyway.
yes, there would be better playoff competition, would have more in-state matchups in the regular season, and get rid of the 0-10 playoff teams. a setback to this is having struggling programs take a serious hit, making it harder for them to make the playoffs, recruiting could become a bigger issue, and the state would lose money, but it's great for creating competitive football in this state

I really dislike having a winless team in the playoffs.

You would have to, thus if that were to be changed every sport would go to the top 2 teams from each District advancing to a playoff.yea 6 classes in all sports spread the hardware around

Everyone is hung up on not wanting winless teams making the playoffs, so?
Horrible teams get blown out in basketball district tourneys every year and there is no outcry. In fact in some 3 teams districts a horrible team can draw a BYE in the first round get blown out in district finals and THEN proceed on to the Regional tourney to get blown out again. Where is that outcry?

Playoffs aren't perfect but they are no where as bad as many on here say.
Each year there are 3 and 4 seeds that win games, are you guys saying they don't deserve a chance.
I say the more the better I have absolutly no problem with 4 teams making the playoffs.
Remember High School Football IS NOT pro-football, it is supposed to be for the kids. How many of you, that played in High School wouldn't have given anything to get to play one more game. Why do a bunch of middle-aged or 20-something has-beens think that they have the right to take games away from kids that work their butts off year round to play the game they love.
To Quote a GREAT Movie, "Let them Play, Let them Play!"

the difference is in basketball, everybody goes to districts. the districts that use draws get a good amount of criticsm, which is deserved. but in football, there are 0-10 teams in the playoffs, but teams that are 5-5, 4-6, or 3-7 that wont make the playoffs because theyll finish 5th in their district.

Go Back to 4 classes. It worked very well

Everyone keeps bringing up basketball & baseball, comparing them to football. When those two sports go to playing in a class system, then hat conversation may be relivant. Until then it's like comparing apples & oranges.
The deal with 0-10 teams going to the playoffs, isn't to cut teams out of the playoffs or prevent blowouts in the first round. My peeve with it is more that when I was in high school, it was more prestigious to go to the playoffs. Now it means nothing because everyone goes. On top of that comes the blowouts etc. When it was a 4 class system, you use to be able to go to a good playoff game any week and it be entertaining. Now it's not as much & the TRUE football fans sit at home listening on the radio rather than going to a game. The state is still losing money by the extra games.

NO.
5 classes public/private would be OK though IMO.

Nope, that was not the argument. Had you read the comments, it was about everyone stating that only the top two teams should go to the playoffs. My argument to that is that if you only allow top two teams, then you should change it for all sports! You are going to have 0-??? in other sports, so we should eliminate them from playoffs in all other sports as well!

Whats wrong with the way it is more teams get to compete that would not in in 3 class system. Just let the kids play! The best team still wins with more kids getting to play I love to watch them.

playing devils advocate here.
ask any senior on an 0-10 team if they would be willing to travel for 2 hours, so they could put on the pads 1 more time and play 1 more last game in their lives of organized football and tell me what the percentage is of the kids would say yes... i bet it would be very high.
remember these are kids that for the most part play the game because they love football not to get a college scholarship. what is the problem with giving them one more game...

Go back to 4 classes, put limitations on private schools. For example: an individual wishing to compete in sports must be enrolled 2 years before eligibility is granted, unless he lives in the county of private school. If you do not put limitations on private schools how can you hold public schools accountable.

While I see your point, any other sport only consumes one day. In football, it consumes a whole week.

I do have a legit question about the 6 class system. why does Class A and 6A only have 32 teams? there are 222 high school football teams in the khsaa, that can be split up evenly to 37 teams in each class. not trying to make an argument, really just want to know
10-31-2011, 05:58 PM
No , I think its cool the way it is.
10-31-2011, 08:29 PM
Not a fan of this or the current system. Hard to please everybody. But, I would like to
see KHSAA have more balance in retrospect to the number of teams. Take a team in a
6 team district and move them to a 4 team district. Then, I would like to see a district
playoff ( 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3 ). Winners moving on to a District Championship. Both
teams in the District championship playing the top 2 teams from the opposing District
championship (i.e. Dist. A #1 vs Dist. B #2) with winners advancing to Regional
Championship. What I like about this is that it gets rid-of the majority of 1st round
blowouts (to many districts with 0 - ? in playoffs). It gives substance to a District
Championship. It gives that Dist. B #2 a second chance to redeem an off night. And,
it would only add 1 game to the playoff schedule. Just my thoughts.....

That's a somewhat romantic p.o.v. If I'm a senior on a team miserable enough to be 0-10, I'm thinking "Let this end." It's like being on life support with a terminal illness.

What he said!! I was on a winning, playoff team all seasons but my senior year, and finishing 2-8. Desite that 10th game being the second win, senior night couldn't end fast enough.

Six classes are to much. They are hardly any teams in each class. Kentucky is not big enough for six classes. I don't know how to fix the private school problem. They are less great teams in each class. I agree with an earlier post, Some champions are a given Highlands-4A Central-3A and Trinity-6A. 5A is the most wide open. Who would of thought 5A would be the easiest class in the state.

A rough idea based on a softball league I used to play in. Each night there were four leagues playing. A, B, C, D At season's end, the top two teams from B would be moved up to A for the following season, with the bottom two in A were dropped to B. Same for B to C and C to D.
Since there were only eight teams in each league two teams up/down worked well. Maybe with more teams in football, the final four could be moved up.
To get it started, you play out this season. Based on the finals, you start the next year with the up/down changes.
Like I said, this is rough, but could probably be tweaked enough to work.

Because you have schools such as Highlands, who play up from their class some years & play in their classified class in others.

For those who say that fans don't apply the winless teams arguments to other sports: I do. I don't believe every team should make it into the playoffs in football, basketball, baseball, or any other sport. The regular season should be meaningful, or why else play it? Awful teams shouldn't even have the chance to ruin a good team's season through some freakish occurrence in an opening-round district game. Just my two cents. Obviously, others will dissent, but the regular season is what participation is for. I'd rather reward excellence over a full season than a team that just happens to get hot over a couple of games.
