I didnt mean any disrespect to the Pikeville program, I was listening to game on line and didnt know Belfry's freshman scored on Pikeville. Just stop them and this would not be a issue. Coach Haywood has never been one to run up the score, the last ten years should prove that. :eyeroll

Read a lot of updates from EKU in the updates thread and was quite amazed at how well Pikeville played in the 1st half. I didn't expect that, I really thought Pikeville would actually be intimidated by Belfry this season like in the past couple of years, but I was wrong. Really impressive and like PT said, Pikeville still has a shot at the regional and state championship. This team has a true leader in Maynard and a great coach!
Belfry done like they've done all too many times in the past, play slow in the first half and wait for the opponents to make mistakes in the 2nd half and capitalize. I've seen it against my Blackcats many of times and it sounded as if this is what happened early in the 3rd quarter tonight.
Congrats Pirates... Great effort Panthers!!!
I hope we all get to cross paths in Bowling Green.

Let it go big guy. It good have been worse. 2nd and 3rd string finished the game. Don't fault the kids for wanting to show what they could do.

Pikeville definantly can make some noise, just not ready for a state championsip run. Need to much more focused. Thats the coaches job.

I believe they have time to get focused.
We're just in week 5.
There is plenty of football left to be played.

I hope this rivalry dosent become like Belfry/ Williamson where the game dont mean anything anymore, and dont benifit eaither team anymore. Belfry out scored williamson 254- 18 in five years. Whats the scoring the past five years Belfry/Pikeville?

Well, I think that all of the Pikeville fans new that this was bound to happen considering howw good of a team Belfry is!
Congrats Pirates!

Yes, you do. If you're the coach of a football team you can do whatever the heck you want to do.
I get so sick of people crying "they ran up the score" on here. If you don't like it, do something about it. Don't like that Belfry went for it on 4th down? Should've stopped them and taken over on downs.
I agree with most others on here that Haywood played the situation exactly the way he should have. Just like Haywood, I would also take my starters out in that situation and give some of my backups and younger kids a chance to play. But would I send in the kids and tell them to take a knee? Shoot no. This might be the one chance all year they get to run some plays, no way would I take that away from them.
Look, Pikeville has a very solid team this year. The schedule sets up nicely for them to finish 9-1 and earn the #1 seed in district. They certainly don't need people getting on here and complaining on their behalf.

Well Haywood is a damn good coach, and the classiest man to ever walk a sideline in this area. He isn't gonna run it up on no one. What he will do is have His young kids prepared for two years down the line when they are playing in that same system.

Congrats to the Pirates. Proud of how my Panthers played in the first half. I said to my brother last week that we might "Be a victim of our good kicker" one of these days. Meaning our kickoff team is so used to ZBV booming them in the endzone that I was afraid some team might catch us slipping and bust a big return and Belfry did. The first 2:00 of the 3rd quarter would have been a back breaker for any team. I was really proud of how our boys fought them in the first half and Im sure Coach Mac and staff will work with these boys this week and correct some mistakes we made. Speaking of ZBV. Hes a good kicker no doubt. But after 2 negative punts tonight I think its time to look at Gavin Miller to handle the punting chores from here on out. Heads Up and Eyes Forward Panthers!!! Move on and get better!

Congratulations Belfry!

All i can say is Haywood is a class act dont agree with the play calls at the end of the 1st half, but that may have been some mercy for pikeville rite there because I know they could have run the ball and scored had 2 time out inside the 10 and he worked on the pass game. like i said i did not agre with it but im not the coach and could never do what haywood has done. To say they run the score up when the 2nd team played in the 3rd and freshman scored in 4th is silly! Thats why belfry is good year after year getting the young kids ready to shine when their turn comes. sorry some of you feel that way but your just wrong.:dontthink

Mark another W up for the Pirates against the Panthers!! This had to be one of the oddest games I watched in all my years. Belfry opened the game by playing pretty flat and slow. Pikeville looked as if they might be somewhat of a challenge this year and then...the 3rd quarter!! Goodnight Sally!!
Just want to mention a few things...Ghormley, Mullins, Messer, Runyon, Thacker, & Dixon!!! My gosh what group of out right HITTERS!!! They remind me of the old days (80's) when you could hear the smashing of shoulder pads and helmets each and every tackle! I LOVE IT! I'm not going to leave out the lineman..they are doing a fantastic job, both the offensive and defensive unit! Keep it up men!
As far as our offense...I don't know who to mention first. Our stable of backs is mindboggling. I don't remember the last time, if any, that Belfry had as much talent in the backfield as they do this year. There is NO WAY to key on just one person. There are fresh legs out there almost every play.
As far as "running up the score"...Haywood has and never will be one to run it up on purpose. If you honestly thought that it was done as a slap in the face, well that's pretty sad on your part. I guess if you can't find anything intelligent to say about the playing of your own team, the mistakes they made to lose the game, why they couldn't stop a freshman from scoring a touchdown in the 4th quarter, then it's easier just to stomp your feet with your lips pouted out and say it's all Coach Haywood's fault that Belfry scored again. Will you be taking your ball and going home now?
Congratulations Belfry!! Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate!

Had Pikeville played better they wouldnt have even had to worry about it.
I dont understand all the whining this year about refs and running up the score. If they subbed down stop them. Nobody gave them the first down. They had to get it. If pikeville wanted the ball back or didnt want Belfry to "run up the score" they should have stopped them plain and simple.
Hell, if i was a coach id score a 200 if given a chance. Then people could say what they want, but at the end of the day my players and I would have a 200 point win.

Congrats to Belfry for the victory. But for a little constructive criticism and I've watched in person every game this season;
IMO Belfry needs to shake up personnel on defense a bit when facing spread teams. As it stands now, Haywood's 5-2 has two of his biggest studs (Messer and Ruynon) covering the flats instead of getting after the passer. Rushing his three d-lineman as they are currently comprised is getting VERY little pressure on the QB. We did have one sack last night when they called a blitz and Runyon got there. Our blitzes from the MLB's do not seem well executed and rarely get there. I do think Ghormley could be a good blitzer, but I wish he didn't delay so much. Show it and come with your hair on fire IMO.
Teams like Pike Co. Central, Ashland, and Breathitt Co. (as it seems that is going to happen) will spread the field just like Prestonsburg and Pikeville. All three of those teams have excellent skill guys and good QB's. Sending our three down lineman and covering the flats with our DE's will give those QB's a lot of time to throw.
I am not sure the solution, but this is the single biggest issue Belfry needs to work on moving forward IMO. I would be interested to hear other Pirate fan's take on this? One thought I have had - is on a 3rd and long against a predominantly passing team, why not go
DE - H. Dotson
DT - Runyon
NG - Trey Willis
DT - Messer
DE - Carr
With the rest of the regulars behind them. That group seems to provide some better pass rush and Dotson and Carr are a little quicker to cover those flats.

You are correct with your analysis... Dotson and Carr ARE faster and most likely would be able to cover the flats quicker. IMHO, I think Dotson is starting @ tackle on D due to the fact that he is quick enough to get a pass rush going. This team has tremendous speed and players that can be moved from position to position and know what to do. Also, I want to commend Coach Haywood in allowing the frosh to get some play time in. Yes, in the 4th, his freshmen QB and players were on the field. The starters, (Dotson, Runyon, Dixon, Willis, Messer, Mullins, etc) were ALL sitting on the bench behind the team getting gatorade and a small break. Good luck to the Pirates on the rest of the season... I look forward at seeing what great things this team can accomplish!

Who said the coach couldn't do whatever the heck he wants to. It's just not good sportsmanship, that's all. Yes Pikeville should have stopped it, but it's still poor sportsmanship. I don't care how sick you are of hearing it, it is what it is. If you don't see it (which obviously you don't) then you fall squarely in the camp of throwing sportsmanship out the window. Which is fine for you. But not me. I'm not whining at all. Belfry could have won by as many as they wanted. But show some class. I'm not making one more post on this subject, you either get it or you don't and you obviously not only don't get it but don't want it even brought up.

Belfry did everything they could and played every man on the roster with the freshman team in there and they give a simple handoff and a kid breaks a touchdown probably the highlight of his life and someone says Haywood ran it up...The single most disappointing statement in all my years of BGR and PHS I know you have more sense than that cause all your posts are real legitimate...Haywood has and will never run it up on anyone particularly Pikeville. It just so happened they ran some plays with their freshman and an even more important questions pointed out by our buddies on Pikeville radio right beside us, what in Hillard Howard's name was Randy Maynard doing in the game at wideout, and I understand that is a PHS set maybe they were working on, but why is he out there with 3-4 minutes to go...There is a reason Belfry is good every year and it is because these young players get a chance to play in late game situations..To say you lost respect for Belfry is the worst statement I Have ever heard on hear...extremely disappointed!!!First, don't let a post in the heat of the moment ruin your day/night/weekend. YEs, Haywood is a classy guy. So I DO regret questioning his classiness, but at the same time, that brings up my next point.
You don't go for it on 4th and 2 with a minute left in the game. Period. If you're on the 10 and want to kick a FG, fine. Looking back thru the posts/updates, I believe you will see that they actually were further back when they went for it, because as I recall, it was a 44 yard run AFTER getting the first down that was the final result. Should have punted the ball away. I don't fault the kid AT ALL for running to daylight for the TD, I fault going for it on 4th and 2 in a 49-14 game. TRUE, as Panther Thunder pointed out (and I respect his opinion very much), it is our job to stop the play, BUT any old school guy will remember that being an unwritten understood rule that you just don't do that in a blowout win.
I'm entitled to my opinion, just like you are. Again, I regret saying Haywood ran it up, because I know he is classier than that. BUT I stand by my statement that you don't go for it on 4th and 2 in a blow out.
As for the game itself, these Panthers showed that they could stand toe to toe against a much bigger and stronger, faster and deeper team for a half. Take away the 21 point swing in 2 minutes of the opening of the 2nd half, and you've still got a real ball game. It's on the Panthers to make sure they learn from this, and I am sure they will. Definitely should not have had Randy in at wideout in the closing minutes either, that's taking a chance on an injury to a key cog on the team. True, it IS a specific package they have worked on several times in all of the games so far this year, but I think it was a risk. We don't have the luxury of having the depth Belfry has, so there will be times in a game like that when Mac doesn't have a choice, but I would have kept him on the sideline and ran that package with Miller, Estep, Pack, etc instead.
Oh well. Not to take anything away from Belfry at all. Class of 3A as far as I am concerned (I've said that all year, BTW), and barring a serious setback, almost a defnite bet to return to Bowling Green and hopefully bring a 3rd championship trophy back to Belfry. Congrats again, Pirates, and good luck on the remaining schedule, I can go back to rooting for you now, and will.

Pikeville looked fair in 1st half they only had the one good drive that they scored on. Belfry stopped them every other time with pikeville moving the ball very little. Belfry fumble and in my opinion the wrong play calls at the end of the half cost them 14 points(should have been 28 to 7 at half) nice kick block for pikeville but the half was owned by belfry but the score dont show it. Not to take away from pikeville good team good luck the rest of the way!:Shaking:

The reason we didn't punt the ball, is because we don't have a backup special teams unit and are punt team has ALOT of starters on it. By this time half those guys are relaxed on the sideline. No sense in putting them back out there, risking injury. Haywood has no reason to run it up on Pikeville.
Maynard is a legit football player, as is #13, let's hope for a Pikeville-PBurg-Belfry party at Bowling Green this year.

I was very impressed with my Panthers in the first half, but after the first 47 seconds of the second half they were defeated and just gave up IMO. I questioned a few offensive play calls for us tonight as well. Over all the better team won plain and simple. I just feel Pikeville is a much better team than was reflected in the game.
Congrats Pirates and Keep your heads up Panthers!

and speaking of those three teams, Josh Dixon, Randy Maynard, and Adam Crisp (is that name correct, I'm talking PBurg QB) are definitely mountain elite right now. Throw in Alan Boggs, and a few others too. Awesome football players we have.

First to the ones crying about runnig the score up, i ahve heard many many pikeville scores in the 60s, 70s, and even and 80 once or twice. I think pikeville would put up 70 on belfry in a new york second, if they could.
next on the people who are talking personal changes, thats obsurd, frist timmy may had a sack in the first half last night and three hits that caused a bad pass. he also made the hit that forced the fumble that we scored on.he put heat on the qb a p-burg. and that was the first game he dressed this year. duty is getting better every week, he made a great play in the flat on a screen at p-burg, these are soph d-line that were linebackers as frosh. aldona came back against p-burg and ahs made an impact, dotson is getting better every week, and tuffy not trey is the wilus that needs to step up at ng. trey is our fullback and could have his knee takenout very easily by a guard who dived at him. it sounds very silly to me what you sugested.
