Bell is solid every year and no exception this year. They are tough and it will be tough on the colonels. Our kids will compete til the end, no matter what the score is. I hope we will work on our pass game this week. We have struggled moving the ball on Bell the past three years.

Were only dressing around 40 players and the majority of them are underclassmen. The returning starters we did have all just about quit.
Its just gonna be a long year for Whitley. Growing pains for atleast 2-3 years before being ready to step up and compete with teams like Bell.
If we dont get more kids out though, well lets just say we will never turn it around.
The junior class at Whitley was awesome in middle school. They ran a balanced attack and killed people; beating Lexington Catholic 2 years in a row. The last game, Catholic threw the towel in with 5 minutes to go in the game. Whitley beat Somerset 54-0 and Somerset threw the towel in at the beginning of the 4th quarter that year. They beat Corbin 2 years in a row. This bunch of boys were only beaten once in middle school-that by Bell County. Whitley was the most dominating and balanced middle school team I have ever seen. When they entered high school it was a different system which relied on the run 90% of the time. Look at the programs now: Catholic, Somerset, and Corbin have gotten better while the big question at Whitley this year is if they should have kicked the field goal or go for it in the last few seconds trailing by 30 points. A good coach would have looked at that talent coming in the high school and adopted to it; instead of being set on a system that doesn't suit your talent level. Whitley will be better next year because of the seniors to be and their desire to win, but the sad thing about this group is they will finish their high school career with a losing record. What a shame for these kids that once was the most feared football team in the area. I don't see it getting any better in the future.

It doesn't matter what offense they are running with the number of kids they have out it will be hard to compete.
You seem to know a lot about that group of kids. can you tell us why so many of them are not on the team now?

Longshot???? That usually means they are the underdog or not the favorite. Is that what you mean, this will be a BC upset?

Great question. As ive stated before on here i know very little about this team or hardly any of the players, but keeping kids from middle school to high school has always been a problem at Whitley.
Id like to know a little more of this group and try to understand why we have lost so many of these kids.

Whithley scored 0 the first game, 3 the second game. Thus, the over/under against Bell County is 1.5 points - Any takers????

Whitley really needs to do some investigation into what causes these kids to quit/transfer or just not come out the next year. Numbers do not seem to be a problem for other teams around this area (Bell Co. for example). So what are they doing different? Whitley would be well served to study a program like Bell to determine what methods they are using to get and keep kids out.

There are several reasons that Whitley does not retain players, it has been a problem for years going back to the Campbell years. Some kids lose interest, some have crappy parents who don't want them to play, some can't step up to the next level, also Whitley has had a problem with coaches sharing athletes within the school. It is not just football that they have this problem. Parents think they can run the program and have been known to complain to board members because their kid was not starting, some kids have parents who shop them around like free agents. Parents are as big a problem as they are a help in most cases, one parent took his younger kids to another school because Coach Black did not get him a D-1 scholarship...LOL. Then took them to a third school because as 8th graders they did not get as much attention as other kids who were born and raised in that system. Whitley provides great equipment to the kids and every opportunity to succeed, but due to the way the elementary school program is run everyone thinks they are stars, thus when they find out they are average and have to wait their turn to shine they get mad and quit....I could give you a bushel full of reasons, but honestly the reasons are as numerous as the stars in the sky.

Every school has those issues at some point though.
Parents are not an excuse IMO.
I think Whitley has a good feeder program for the most part. Kids are able to be competetive at a yound age and with 6 elementary schools to choose from, there should always be players around. The middle school use to not have a problem with getting 60 or 70 kids out for each grade.
Its a shame that there are that many kids in that school and all we have is 40 players.

Great post. You should join the site, its always good to have WC fans.
I agree the reasons are numerous with parents being up there near the top. My point is that I'm sure places like Bell county probably have parents just as bad as Whitley but they have solved those problems somehow. It would be nice to study a program like that to find out how they get kids out.

RIUTG, I agree with you that every school has those same problems (parents included). Some of these schools have figured out how to be successful, and do it consistently, despite these problems.
Whitley needs to figure out also because they will never be a consistent contender with 40 kids in 5A.

How many srs does Whitley have this year? Was this expected to be a down year?

I think we only have 6 or 7 seniors. None of which are skill players.
It was expected to be a down year. I think everyone knew it was going to be a rough year and losing our top two defensive players and starting RB made things even worse as they were all 3 seniors. Its going to be extremely hard to get the ball rolling. I look for this bunch to make some noise in a couple of years but as for now, its going to be a learning process.

I haven't spoke to Ryan Collett in about a week. Is he playing tonight? I see Davenport with 300 yards and Polly with 200 yards rushing tonight. Pound it football tonight!

Someone said he could have played last week but was held out as a precaution by Coach Mills and the family, smart move IMO. Turns out they did not need him against m'boro.
