You see Yogi this is where some of us differ on our opinions as a taxpayer to both the city and county and also the state of KY, I feel that my family pays enough in taxes that I should be able to send mine to any school that we choose, and not be forced to go where we don't feel that it is the best fit.

It is America. Where education is free. However, it is not Burger King---You can't have it your way. There are certain rules we have to go by. I could live in KY and work in TN. I still have to pay KY state tax. That is life.

Not to disrupt a good discussion, but is there any news of a basketball coach for those kids that pay taxes/write a check/choose to go to Harlan?

Wanted a face that could battle your face in a fight
I heard they are really "roughing it" with the staff on hand for the summer. Haven't heard much on the permanent position.

Where's the popcorn? I'm off tomorrow and will try to get over that way and find out some news, if there is any.

I can save you a trip....Derrick Akal WILL be the coach if not this year IT WILL be next year....I have tried and tried to make my point but other names keep coming up...you see, this is a plan that has been in motion for quite some time and it is now starting to unfold.

Well, if you are correct then who will do it this year? That's the "million dollar question." Why won't he do it this year?

I would have no problem with Akal coaching a boys team or staying with the girls team for as long as he wants. I thought he deserved district and region coach of the year this past season. He has proven his ability.
My curiosity is more about some type of 'plan'. My impression is that Harlan is far from 'sports crazy'. Are there people that would care enough and have enough weight to implement such a conspiracy just for 5-8 more wins per season (or whatever you think Coach Akal would bring over Coach Lester)?
Gas is $4/gallon, so if you can lay it out, I might just try to find a baseball game to watch instead.

Save your gas and watch a baseball game.

Never understood about a "plan." Would anyone care to tell us about the "plan?" I thought there was a resignation because of pressure by administration to win more and he didn't feel like he could live up to their expectations. If there is more, could someone tell it, please????

Alright, drove all the way to Manchester only to watch the Bears fall apart. Wasted gas either way. Baseball is done; basketball is quiet. Less than 12 weeks to 1st football game...best I can do.

Who started the "plan," and how did the "plan" start?
06-01-2011, 12:27 PM
I don't have to explain the "plan"....if you are from the inner circle of Harlan Ind. and one person from the county board, they know what is going on....look, I don't have a problem with or for that matter really don't care who they hire but it will only be for one year so that Akal can have his moment of glory with the girls....it is just ashame of how things were done and how Lester was done as much time as he has put into Harlan...at least they could be honest with him and quit playing games with him and his family.

Sorry, I don't understand what the "plan" was/is, but I just thought that someone could explain. But i'm starting to ge the picture.

Why do you have a problem with coach Akal having his moment in the sun as you call it? He and his girls have earned whatever time they want together, as I remember coach Jones wAs the girls coach at Cawood then switched to the boys and it was ok and it worked out pretty good for him and the kids that he later coached.
06-02-2011, 01:45 PM
Granted, this is an outsider's view, but it looks like their problem is (if the entire rumor/plan is true) that Coach Lester was not told the truth (based on the posts here), not to mention any coach that might be looking to come in probably needs to know he/she is only for one year (again, if the plan is in place).
06-02-2011, 02:27 PM
I don't disagree Mountain Pride 10 about Akal wanting to stay with the girls...the thing I have a problem with is the way they handled Lester, playing him like a pawn.
06-02-2011, 02:32 PM
Eric Ratliff will be the new basketball coach.
06-02-2011, 03:17 PM
Is that the Jenkins (former East Ridge) coach?
06-02-2011, 08:21 PM
Eightball, could you fill us all in on how him and his family were played. I would like to know the truth about all this and you seem to know more than you are telling.

I wish Harlan would just hire a coach. I could understand all the talk if this was the 90's.
06-02-2011, 10:45 PM
Well I still don't know how he got played if he resigned. Hopefully the "plan" is true because if he resigned/quit on his team because of a "conspiracy/plan" that is not true, then how would he feel.

Off the topic and by no means trying to be confrontational, as I am old, gone and out of the fray, but I want to take up for my hometown school. It is important who is hired as coach at Harlan. The solid basketball program there goes back 80 years, FAR beyond the 90's. The ESPN highlight generation has given us short memories. Harlan has a tradition that is as good as any school in SE Kentucky. Harlan has been to the Sweet 16 in 3 different generations, and is 1 of 3 schools to win an All "A" and Sweet 16 title. Names like Gilley, Troutman, Gray, Hicks, Jones (Wah-Wah and Mike), Parsons, Miller and Thomas are an impressive list. It is not great at the moment, but the program is well worth discussion and concern.

Good points.
Harlan had great runs in the 40s, 60s and 90s.

I agree with dungy that HHS is far from a one short run in the 90s school when it comes to tradition. Some people would have you believe that the only time that Harlan was a state power was when the team that was built by Jerry Blanton and had county kids as some call it as the main components. Some other points that Dungy left off was that Harlan has won the 13th region multiple times in multiple decades, they also are third behind Clay Co and Corbin in number of times to win the region.

How many county teams made it to the Sweet 16?
