Bolt Wrote:Your right they do have an athletic director at both schools, Keith Gilbert at South and Jimmy Durham at North, but Randy Leger is the director of athletics and is who does most of the decision making.
Larkey has done a good job at North at playing the best players, however, the last few years there has not been much to choose from. Also, i was referring mostly to south in regards to politics.
If you live around this area, which you may, you know as well as i do that many parents wont even let their kids play sports because of the favoritism shown.
Welch is in their and that how hes kept his job even after a dismal 0-10 season.
South should be one of the premeir jobs in the mountains as London is the best recreational town in the mountains and has the best economy as well as the largest population.
Its just the way laurel county has been and always will be.
I do live in the area and I know a little about Laurel County Athletics. Problem is that South is a basketball only school and North is a Softball school and I guess a football school. Everything else at those schools is an afterthought.
I wish both the best. I enjoy watching them both and I wish both schools the best. I hope North and South can turn things around

Youre definitely right about South being a basketball school, but what about now that all of the bball talent from the early 00s is gone.
I dont see South ever regaining Bball supremecy over this part of the state again for atleast another 7 or 8 years and who knows after that.
North has always come second hand to South, which imsure you know. But really its pretty much dead even now with talent and numbers at both schools.

Hasnt both schools also had good baseball teams? I always thought NL was treated different from SL, kind of like a little brother who is second best.
What are the numbers like for football?

What were the spring football numbers like ?

I have heard South had nearly 50 out and North was in the 30's. Not sure if it's true though.

If North was only able to manage 30 something kids out for spring ball they might be in trouble next year.
Heck, souths 50 is not a good number for spring ball for a 5A school.

Those numbers are pretty typical lately in London, just 5-6 years ago South was dressing nearly 100.

50 is an incredible number for ANY school for spring ball considering you can't dress 8th graders or seniors and many kids are gone for baseball or track.
That would probably put you at around 70 for a fall squad. VERY few teams in Kentucky dress more than that. Highlands, X, Trinity, a few louisville schools maybe. I'd say 5a average is about 60, 4A 50, 3A 40, 2A 40, 1A 30 for totals in the fall.
I'd heard that South only had about 20-25 lifting and less than 30 at practice. Thats from a player and two guys that went to watch them during a baseball game. No clue about North though.

Well after talking to a parent of a player Coach Gray was offered the OC job and was suppose to be interviewed by the site base. From my understanding Co Por and Welch got into a verbal arguement and welch was.confronted with this news. From there the story goes Gray was never called back. He.is now the QB coach at a NAIA school. I do know that deathridge the QB for south seems to look tons better than he did before working with Gray for 4 months after the season. Hopefully Sl does good this year.

I wouldn't have trusted a guy to run an offense after one year of experience. Can't say I blame him.

South Laurel has improved ALOT on both sides of the ball. Have more athletes than last year. Definitely will not go 0-10 again. I watched their scrimmage friday night and they were nothing less than dominant against everyone they played.

If they could keep him healthy they have a really good sophomore in Austin Rickett. What little ive seen of him shows that he is definitely a good football player.
