LOOKAYANNER Wrote:I can understand this with most consolidations where several schools are discontinued and a new one is built---with a new name, mascot, location, etc, with the exception of Laurel County. The Cardinals won the state championship in 1982. Then North Laurel was created because the school had outgrown itself. Instead of leaving the original school as Laurel County High, the school officials changed its name to South Laurel, even though it is still in the same building, same gym, same baseball field, and uses the same mascot name as the "old" high school. That has never made sense to me. Actually, only one new school was created, not two. Students were taken from the Laurel County High and moved into the new school to make North Laurel.
But in the state program it has Laurel County winning a state championship in 1982 and then another category for South Laurel when they won their championship.....even though they are the same school. Go figure.
We have a couple of similar issues in our region as well. Allen County High School was formed in the 40s and there was the city school Scottsville High School as well. The two schools consolidated in the 1970s. They had built a new building for Allen County High about 5 years prior to the consolidation, and following that, the newly named Allen County-Scottsville High School was in the same building, with the same mascot (Patriots) as Allen County High. In the Sweet 16 record book, they list Allen County and 10 regional titles, thus combining the two schools. In their own school, they have trophies in the trophy case for Allen County High, but have no banners recognizing championships from before the consolidation, but banners for after.
My school, Warren Central (who has 11 titles by the way, hoping for a 12th this week), had a similar situation, though there were no championships prior to consolidation. It was formed in 1968 by a consolidation of Warren County and Alvaton. They remained in the Warren County building, retained the Dragons mascot, and had the same colors. Beyond that there was a prior school South Warren that also had the same mascot and colors. I would not combine any championships were there any, but that's just me.

Scotty doesn't know Wrote:I was just wondering about this the other day. I was thinking about how many overall regional titles my ole alma mater has and I thought that this would be a really fun thread to see all the history in the area!If SV has 6, that's what they've got. Dorton and Virgie don't count in Shelby Valley's records. Dorton has their records, Virgie has theirs, and Shelby Valley has theirs.
With the formation of Shelby Valley in 1990 stemming from Dorton High School and Virgie High School I think that the overall regional title count would be 13. Some one correct me if I am wrong but Shelby Valley has 6
15th regional titles (2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010) and I believe Dorton had 2 and Virgie had 5. Strong history for Valley as well as other teams in the area! So lets hear it!

I disagree. I think that it is fair to acknowledge a school's history. For South Laurel do you think that they should not be able to claim that their school is the state champs when it was Laurel county before the split. I think it is a fitting tribute to your school's past and should be completely acknowledged.
By the way, I think that I was wrong in the beginning post. I believe that Dorton had one as mentioned before and Virgie had 7 which gave the total of 14. Please if someone has any way to confirm these old regional records, let me know.

South Laurel has a different complaint than SV. SL never consolidated. They just added the word "South" to their name. Therefore their's should count.
SV on the other hand. Was consolidated and created. A NEW SCHOOL. SV didn't win those titles, Dorton and Virgie did. And that is the case with ANY school that has consolidated.
If you counted them for the new schools. You would need to change the programs and replace all the old school names with the new ones. And IMO that would be a slap in the face to the people that played for those teams and earned those banners. I'm sure if you asked one of those former players. They would tell you REAL quick...Virgie won that title NOT SV or Dorton won that title NOT SV.
Now I am all for keeping the history and taking those old banners and placing them inside the new schools. That way people would always see them and know.

I know that the former players and everyone associated with the regional titles would not say anything like "Shelby Valley won these" but that it is "Shelby Valley's rich tradition." All I am saying is that it is their achievement that feed into the "new" schools basketball tradition. If not for the great basketball programs that Virgie and Dorton had for the community, there would not really be a fertile history that has help pave the way for Valley's achievements. I really do not think that it is "Shelby Valley's" titles persay but than again it is their history that lead to these 6 recent titles. So I recognize them from a historical standpoint. I can promise you, 100%, that when "Shelby Valley and how many regional titles they have" ever comes up I ALWAYS say 6, not 14. But if anyone was to ask about Valley's or the community's extended history it is valid to say 14.

This is true.
The area has that many. But, not the school.
If that were the case Johnson Central would have a ton of great accomplishments to claim as their own. With the sccuess of the older schools....Flat Gap, Oil Springs and Meade.

How much more does those schools add to Johnson Central's success? I think that it is fine to claim those seeing as though they laid the way for Johnson Central.

I think it's fine to say "Shelby Valley has won 6 regional titles in 20 years of existence. In addition, the two schools that consolidated to form SV back in 1990 had combined to win an additional 8 titles between them."

Not sure on everything. But, those were some of the best teams and players in all of eastern KY in their days. They had former NBA players and still to this day the second all time leading scorer in the state. I woud have to do a little more research to find state tourney births and things like that. Same could be said about Sheldon Clark with Inez and Warfield. Maybe someone like KYRIFLE could help us out on this one. I'll send him a message.

That would be correct they do have 3 regional runner-ups. 93-94 loss to Allen Central @ allen central (first year of the program) knocked off Elkhorn City who then had Todd Conley (was up for Mr. Basketball that year). 98/99 loss to Pikeville @ Johnson Central (Pike Central knocks of fav Johnson Central in a triple OT thriller in the semi-finals only to lose to Pikeville for the fourth time by double figures that year, Central was in the 59th at that time), (Pikeville would go on to beat Boyd Co. in the first round of state losing to Ballard, Ballard would go on to beat Scott in the state finals). Then in 03/04 loss to ER @ P-Burg on a last second Spears follow up (most heart breaking loss I have ever endured and was truly David's loss for the love of coaching the game). This would be one of Valley's 3 losses since 01 in the regional tournament. Which they lost to P-Burg in the first round with Kiser and company.
Just thought I would give you some info on the history of your schools basketball program if you would like to know more PM me.

You could say sheldon clark has won a few state championships if you want to go by what the previous schools did before consolidation. And Johnson central would have the most on anyone in this region If all the titles were to be added together.

What schools fed into Sheldon Clark? See this is insanely interesting to me. I am so interested to see the states old high school history. KHSAA only goes back to the mid-late 90s so I am trying my hardest to find this information.
This page was an excellent lay out and really helps to see the state's history and the schools that have allowed for the these traditions. If only there was a spreadsheet like this for regional titles!
