Almost forgot congrats and good luck to him and his family and the others that might leave with him.

I understand that some of the players are pulling for Matt Altobello to be the next head coach. It seems this would be a good choice as the administration knows him, he teaches at the high school, continuity with the program and he has a very strong work ethic. Good luck to coach Salmons, he has left a good mark on LC football and all the players he mentored and coached.

Yes academics is and should be the focal point at LC, but the football program brings all the revenue, spirit, excitement, and attention around the school and community. It is vital that we bring in the right person and the administration doesn't make another bonehead decision towards a coach like they did with the basketball program. Look at that program now and you would be a fool to think the same thing couldn't happen to the football team.
As for a coach, Copley would burn the program to the ground, Caudill would be friends with all the players, and Dixon would play playstation minutes before every football game like he use to all the time when he coached. The sad thing is, is that this administration would allow all of these guys to be on the same coaching staff together at the same time. That would equal complete meltdown of the program.
They need to go out and hire someone who is experienced both coaching and playing in college (not someone who played baseball in college), someone who has a plan mapped out and presents his plan for expectations and success for the next few years, and someone who can motivate kids to do well both academically and athletically.
As far as the comment about other coaches leaving from other sports. I wouldn't be surprised to see the baseball coach leave next. It could be a snowball effect here at LC.

Coach Salmons was named Huntington hammer coach but resigned earlier this year due to focusing on high school coaching. Cant HAMMER him for that..

I could pull for Alto... as for Copley, I wouldn't waste my breath.

I could see Alto, Skinner, or Cecil being good candidates for the job. Coach Cecil I know has plenty of experience and use to be a head coach somewhere I think it was East Carter. Alto and Skinner would probably go with Salmons but who knows for sure. I doubt they would stay around here though

And for who they hire I hope its not Copley.

yeah i agree, coach salmons had to pull teeth to get someone to line the game field for JV games. I played for coach salmons and his staff as well as goldsmiths' last year here and i compare both staffs. it was like night and day between how much harder salmon's staff worked and prepared compared to goldsmiths. I saw how salmons would always struggle to get a few things to help the program. I heard all the playoff money from 2009 went to stupid stuff like those new basketball rims outside the board office that you always see kids hanging from the nets and rims. someone is gonna get killed. also they are building a new tennis complex around 200,000 dollars and i'm sure most of that came from money generated from football. No money is going back to the football team and salmons is fed up and i do not blame him. Heck the band gets more things than the football team, they get 100 percent of the concessions and they only have like 20 members!!!! they do not even stay after halftime!!
when you fight for years, show success, and get nothing in return, yes you will leave. they didn't even pay a long time assistant coach this year, and if i heard right, this is two years in a row and that is why coach preece will not come back next season. again, another good coach the administration let go. first it was anderson, then preece, now salmons, then probably his staff, then probably baseball coach... there will be nothing left here to guide our sports before long.

I would guess that Salmons had no intentions of staying at LC very long regardless of the situation... but that is just my opinion. Going back to his home area to coach at a larger school would be his main incentive I'm guessing.

Coach Salmons was indeed a very good coach.. who leaves behind him a fine group of boys. He did make may strides in the football team during a down time. There is a great disappointment in the fact when the boys questioned him about leaving to go to Boyd Co sometime back.. he told the Seniors of 2012 he would be there for them their Senior year..as they were there on the sidelines as Freshmen in the "o"fer season. Wonder how the players and fans of Midland will still show support if their team goes 0-11? I know many of the boys are wanting Coach Altobello as as the new head coach next year. I wish Coach Alto the best and hope the rumor is true.

What will happen with the wrestling team? They have some good wrestlers that love the sport and some want to go to college and wrestle. Is anyone going to step up for those boys that have put in a lot of time and effort and help them at least finish their season.
01-13-2011, 02:59 PM
Yes football brings in the money but that is the same everywhere and at the college level as well. But just because they bring in the money doesn't mean you have to hurt your other programs. LC doesn't get the most bang for their buck. They have multiple everything and a prime example is how they are doing soccer. Instead of spending money and getting field turf put down which would help the football team, track and field, soccer and be able to be used for other stuff they will instead leave the football field as is which results in them not wanting the band to practice on it, organizations like relay for life unable to use it anymore, soccer spending money to try and build a new field and the football team still having a field that is better but not that great and will need redone in a few years again. Makes no sense and guys I'm telling you boys soccer is coming might as well get ready for it.

that brings up a good point dawgbyte who will take over the wrestling program? or will it just end for the year now that salmons is gone? a lot of questions need to be answered soon as spring ball is coming up, who will run the weight room till then, and who will take over the wrestline program? will salmons finish out the school year or leave immediately?

During the last time around, I said Cecil should get the job. He was at Russell when I was there, and he was a great coach and person. He really gets kids motivated, and knows his schemes. Maybe he doesnt even want the HC position. I dont know, but if he does LC should take a good look at him for the position.

lot of $$ coming his way from Cabell from what I understand. Maybe ALL about the benjamins was a little harsh, but Im betting it helped tip the scales.

Isn't the basketball program the way it is now because they didn't hire the guy that the kids wanted? If that's the case then they would be fools not to hire Altobello solely for fear of the same kind of thing happening to the football program.
01-13-2011, 08:20 PM
You dont hire a Coach because of the influence of kids. They are kids and cant make good decisons. As for them quitting any sports because of not getting their way, seems really childish. LC should take the advice of past good men. Goldsmith, Eddie Wayne, Phil Ratliff all would be people I would trust to help make a good choice.
01-13-2011, 08:25 PM
That's what I would do... from this point forward turn all hiring decisions over to the kids... if not they will not play sports, come to school or participate in any school activity's because they didn't get their way. :lmao:

i really doubt coach altobello will want to take the head job here. i doubt he will even be here next season. probably go with salmons to midland

Wasnt your principal an assistant coach for Copley when he first came to GC until he (Cook) went to Fairview. Looks like Copley may have the inside track.

Coach Burchett actually has more of an inside track to this job than Copley does.

I really feel the administration had better pick a good coach soon because if they let it drag on and on, the numbers in the weight room will get smaller (if they even have someone to run the weight room), spring ball will be a waste, and momentum heading into the summer will be low= bad season all around. they need to do a thorough search but it needs to be a top priority. Football in this town is all we have really and if that goes wayside then a lot of the town pride will go bye bye with it.
01-14-2011, 01:20 PM
Is there a short list for who might be in the running for the job?
01-14-2011, 02:48 PM
Agree with some of the posts that Burchett should be at the top of the list.
Coached here with Chuke Williams & also @ Johnson Central w/Matney &
both had or have potent running attacks which is the Dawgs trademark.
Based on Burchett's past (experience) he might be an upgrade for Lawrence CO

The only logical hire to continue the recent success of the program is Coach Burchett.

What about the baseball program? Are they not successful enough for this town?

I think it goes without saying that Burchett would be the obvious choice. He has the most experience, every team he has assisted or coached has had an incredibly productive rushing attack and he could bring back a little bit of pride and tradition to the Bulldog program.
As for the other coaches mentioned for the vacant position: they all seem like they would be good for the program, but not as the HEAD man. Maybe with a few years under a seasoned and experienced coach like Burchett, but not without being proven. The LC football program is back on the rise. A young, and/or inexperienced coach would only run the program into the ground.
The logical hire would be to get Coach Burchett back in LC and hire another prospect to take over when he decides to retire. But the current system has made some pretty ridiculous decisions in the past few years and it's really hard telling what the people of LC should expect. But I guarantee they are with me when I say something needs to happen to put the fun and excitement back into Bulldog Football. Seems like everything changed after the "Chuke" era.
