Steriod Testing for the State Playoffs?
#31
What needs to done is that if a kid becomes a overnight success,by that i mean gains alot of speed or a lot of muscle in a very short time, they should be tested. If they fail their parents should have to pay the bill.If it's my kid,I would surely like to know.

That would be hard to do since all kids should be developing overnight. They are maturing. They will gain incredible amounts of size, strength and speed at this age. I bench pressed 205 in 8th grade. By the beginning of 9th grade I benched 225. The next year I benched 275, then 350lbs by a junior then 365 my senior year. My senior year I lost 30lbs and still increased my bench by 15 lbs. So There is a 75lb jump fairly quickly. Steroids won't make you go up any faster. It would be hard to pin point whos on steroids based on performance. These kids are already having the side effects naturally. Oily skin, acne, mood swings, increase size, stringth and size. We also don't need to acuse kids of steroid use just because they work hard and develope. That can be damaging to the kids. They are kids.

What I want to know is how these kids could possibly get the stuff without a parent knowing. I mean at the cheapest it's around 2 or 3 hundred dollars for one cycle, which lasts about 2-4 weeks. Depending on the route you go. So even if thy have a part time job it's going to be hard to get enough money. I may be wron but I dont think hhis stuff is sold in doses.
I'm in love with Tawnya.. hehe..

Tom is not my friend....

if you have any questions send me a p.m.

A rumor is something that may or may not be true. This is facts. Most of their fans will even admit it and even go as far to say that's why the program is on a decline. I will say if you think I'm referring to Ashland I'm not.
You're on crack if you think it isn't going on at Raceland, or at the very least hasn't gone on. Try casting that stone out of that glass house. Typical Raceland reply however.

Negative. You might want to google it. Its leagal in alot of places. Its legal here to an extent. I will just go ahead and tell you less than 100-150 dollars will get you 10 weeks and a pct. I have never used steroids. However I do have a degree in kineisiology and have worked with alot of athletes. I compete in powerlifting, both tested and non tested federations. I have been around it. It is not expensive or hard to get until the feds show up at your door. Which will eventually happen.

If it save the life of one young person I am for it..

Sometimes their is a way you can tell if a person is on Steroids without any testing, however it's not always evident. Just last week a friend and I were talking about this subject (kids using steroids in H.S.). My friend knows a lot about steroids because back in the day he had a few very close friends who took them. He recalled several reactions that his friends had to the drugs.
And the one I'm refering to is ***** TITS. Just this summer he said he saw this kid with his shirt off and the "B.T's." were very much present along with a musclar body that most kids weighing 160lbs don't have and a bench press that kids weighing in the 200lb class will most likely never see.
Sorry to say but right now at the present time this kid is getting major news coverage.
Now some kids have breast where their nipples stick out and they are doing nothing wrong, but the 'B.T's" I'm talking about are, not only does your nipples stick out but a breast tissue has started to rise and form. If you see this than that's a dead give away.
#38
WOW!! What is this world coming to. Have been around high school athletics all my life and have NEVER suspected this of anyone.
#39
Why just the kids in the mountains! If this is true then people would be stupid to believe it doesn't go on all over the state. Some kids work hard for what they have!!!!

If you have "proof" then go to the local school boards and present your "proof" to them. Lay it out clearly with evidence. Put it on public record. Then let the local media see this evidence. Don't just pass on rumors or this team kicks our @** so they must be on something. If you have the facts lay them out. Same with "recruiting" or any other "illegal" activity that taking place in high school sports. If you have proof shine the light on it, if not then just....................

Yes that is a common side effect of steroids. It is also a side effect ot puberty. It is also easily taken care of with anti estrogens or serms. So that would not even be present in most users. Also who are we to say what is reasonable for a kid to lift at any weight. The strength thing does not hold true. I know people who lift insane amounts of weight for their size who are natural.

All this is 100% correct. I don't know why people think it's so expensive. The only time that happens is if someone gets it and jacks the prices up to sell to someone who doesn't know any better. A kid can get all his juicing needs from just cutting grass.

If you have evidence of trafficking in and use of illegal steroids, you should contact Kentucky State Police. They have posts at Harlan, Hazard, Pikeville, London and Ashland serving the mountains.

I kind of noticed some of the mountain kids that came up to Ft. Thomas were very mature for their age.

I went to Sheldon Clark and MSU.

No, but then neither has tobacco use been proven to "directly" kill anyone.

Anabolic steroids artificially raise peripheral resistance (blood pressure). This is because the heart to work harder to push blood through swelling muscle tissue. The by-product of the elevated blood pressure HAS been proven to affect body organs negatively, especially the liver and kidney. The longer one juices, the more end-organ damage accrues.

And I haven't even mentioned the potential psychological effect known as "Roid Rage"...

I have enjoyed reading everyone's opinion on this and appreciate each viewpoint. Here are some thoughts:

1. "Dont test due to expense" Here is a test for 70.00 http://www.craigmedical.com/Steroid_Testing.htm
Clearly, cost is not the issue.

2. Who to test? I agree that waiting to test at Playoff time limits the impact of any such program. Maybe random pre and midseason test?

3. Impact of not testing... These are the biggest reasons why we should test: Health impact to our sons; increase chance of injury to the taker and those he faces; Cheaters should not be rewarded with success; and we don't want pressure on clean athletes to put this junk in their bodies.

People will always find a way to cheat. Taxes, sports, jobs - all places where the unethical attempt to find a short cut. But in nearly every other place besides HS football their is a check and balance to audit and identify cheaters. Not having some way to find the cheaters is tainting the integrity of the game as well as encouraging others to cheat.

I hope someday this is changed.

$70 a test is not expensive????

Now multiply it by just the starters lets say. 22 per team. Let's cut it even further. Let's say it's 10 per team that you randomly test. That's $700 per team. 32 teams X 6 Classes = 192 Teams.

Now 192 Teams X $700 is $134,400 spent on Steroid Testing.

"But only test the teams that appear to be steroid built?" How can you tell?

And at what point do we test?

Right before the playoffs? There are 5 weeks of playoffs. What if you start juicing after the test and reach week 3,4 or 5?

So do we test after the playoffs too?

The cost, logistics and rules for High Schools to do this is not inexpensive just because one testing kit found online is $70. And where does the $70 come from? School Budgets that already don't give teacher's raises or cut positions because they can't afford them? Boosters who can't raise extra income in this economy? :please:

Oneijoe i know as a doctor you understand the side effects of steroids. I know you know that most healthy individuals taking steroids will have lower blood pressure than the average American. There is also an increase in cholesterol, mainly bad cholesterol. However this is only linked to certain drugs. We all know blood pressure and cholesterol is bad for you, yet we continue to eat fast food as well. I am sure you know the different delivery mechanisms in different steroids. Orals will do horible things to your kidneys due to being 17a methylated. That is the same way over the counter pro hormones get into the blood stream as well. I also do not believe in Roid Rage. It is not proven. People like the pro wreslter Bennoit(sp) suffered from depression, alcohol abuse and drug addiction so we can not say he had roid rage. However do not get me wrong. Steroids are horrible for a young boy. I just do not believe the correct way to prevent their use is through scare tactics. The fact is that they do not do a whole lot to improve performance. They increase nitrogen retention. They increase protein synthesis. They can help your body repair faster after hard workouts. However at a young age they can permanently damage your bodies ability to produce testosterone naturally. They can shut your testes down. This can actually make your performance level lower in the long run. I do believe they are fine for hormone replacement therapy for older men going through andropause. They can make them healthier. But at a young age you are basically lowering your peak performance. That will never come back.

Mountain team epidemic or is this a much bigger problem across the commonwealth of Kentucky? Should we start preparing the asterisks in High School football?
#55
Isnt there already a thread a about this? There isnt much you can do about it in high school. Get over it people.
#56
What mountain teams do you suspect or have heard are on the "juice?" IMO anyone that would encourage the use of performance enhancing drugs in young adults should be banned from the game.
#57
The point is those kids juicing know that it's performance enhancing and illegal. Win or lose, they'll always know in their hearts they cheated and it will follow them the rest of their lives.

To be honest the first players I played with that used steroids were from Nky at MSU. That was a few years back too. I knew quite a few in WV but not in EKy.
#59
In the last twenty years or so, I am of the opinion that several top players were using steroids in the central Ky area. I believe the coaches just turn a blind eye to it as long as it helps get W's. Coaches should recognize when a player gets bigger and stronger in short periods of time. Testing would be hard to do because of the cost, only education and just plain ethics will help. Also, when was the last time you heard of an arrest of a dealer of steroids. Nobody cares.
#60
Players that are going to use, are going to use. I don't think a lot can be done. I don't think testing is feasible.
