good season Belfry

You win some, you lose some.
Russell was fired up in the first half and for a while I thought it was gonna be ugly. The Red Devils set out to turn the Pirates against the game of football and they almost did. At halftime the Pirates readjusted and made some big plays to get back in the ballgame. They say to win a state title you have to have coaching, good players, and the ball has to bounce your way a time or two. Well, we had the first two, but the bounces did not go our way.
Bottom line......Belfry got beat by the better team tonight. Good luck to Russell in the state finals. Keep that title in the east!!
BTW........Matt Maynard ran the QB from Russell down from behind when the QB was a good 15-20 yards in front of him. That was one of the most impressive plays I have seen in all my lifetime. The kid he ran down was not slow, but Matt made him look like he was barely moving.
I feel really bad for the seniors on this team. I've gotten to know some of them and they are really great kids. But I think you did better than most expected you to and really showed a lot of determination throughout the year. Losing the last game of your high school career really hurts, I know that, but life goes on and eventually you'll be up in the stands cheering on kids who grew up admiring the things you done on the field. And when you look back and think "Man, I've got two state chamionship rings on my hand" remember that most people never get to wear even one.

What a game. Russell seemed to start off more fired up than Belfry, and they really took it to the pirates in the first half. After halftime Coach Haywood made some adjustments, and that set the tone for the second half. Like Belfry in the first half, Russell just couldn't move the ball in the second half. Belfry had the ball deep in Russell territory twice in the 2nd half, but just couldn't convert due to fumbles and penalites, including once where belfry had the ball 1st and 10 deep in Russell territory, but before long, that 1st and 10 became 3rd and 43. Things like that killed Belfry.
Congrats to Belfry on a great season. Everyone doubted you all season long, but you all kept going and proved everybody wrong. You all have nothing to regret. And to you Belfry seniors, you all did a great job leading a young Belfry team. I wish you all the best of luck in your futures.
Congrats to Russell on the big win. Ivan McGlone is a great coach and it would be great to see him get another ring, and it would also be good for Russell and for EKY if they won the 2A state championship. Good luck to the Red Devils in Louisville!

NEXT Wrote:Not what I was saying at all, just those delay of games killed the big Mo. And that last play call, a pass on 3rd and 8 with 50 secs......come on thats a plain out horrible call.I can't think of many teams in the world who would run on 3rd and 8.

Belfry does 99.9% of the time.

WOW! I thought Belfry would pull through... very nice season though. Way to go guys!

Thank you Pirates for another good year. Not too bad i say for a rebuilding yr. We played a horrrible 1st half but Haywood made the adjustments he had to at halftime, but we just fell a little short in the end. IMO the best team didn't win this one, just the team that wanted it the most did.

:lmao: not laughing @ anything of belfry but the fact that the best team did not win.

You mean in your honest opinion that Russell is a better team than Belfry? NO WAY
11-26-2005, 11:58 AM
Well they won did they so they have to be the better team then belfry. I am not sayin that Belfry is not horrible or anything iam just sayin that russel had more talent then they had that night. Do not get me wrong Belfry is good you do not just get into the playoffs without nothing.

i have to agree that they won and i never did say that they didn't want the win more, i just said that Belfryt is an all around better team that They are, but enough of this stuff. Russell won and now they get their chance at a State Title. but i also predict a Catholic sweep of the Championships this year.

I was disappointed to see Belfry lose this game. I was hoping to see BHS as the 3 peat champs. Belfry you guys have nothing to be ashamed of. Coming in to this year, you were huge underdogs due to the graduation bug, but you guys stuck together and played championship football. I don't see anything to be ashamed of. You dominated the district and the region once again this year, and I don't see much different from this squad next year. Belfry is a prime time football team that can and WILL get it done. Congrats to the pirates on a beyond expectation season.

Congrats on a great run Belfry...for three years you've been the most consistant team in the bluegrass in November and December...hold your heads up!

I heard that game would be @ Ashland. Is that true?
11-26-2005, 01:29 PM
It killed me last night to see the final score....and Belfry came back so strong in the 2nd half and then fall short.......Congrats to Russell tho and good luck in the State title game.....and Congrats to Belfry on an outstanding season.....u all proved alot of people wrong this year by making it as far as u did....but i wish u all would have made it all they way for the 3rd straight....nothing to be ashamed of and u all had a hell of a season

Mental Mistakes...... the difference in Belfry sitting at home next week and playing.
1st Half- The blown coveraae on 3rd and forever that Clark turned into a 50+ yard reception The fumbled kick. Right there was 13-0 because of two mental errors.
The missed blocks in particular at the end of the half on 3rd and 4 when Maynard runs a sweep...Belfry picks up that block and it is a 20+ yard gain.
2nd Half- We were literally a butt twitch away from playing in Lousivlle...the TD gets called back on what was the right call.
The delay of games penalties were drive killers.
The fumbles (although we recovered them) also hurt us, in particular the one where Matt tried to reverse field and lost 10+ yards.
The iso-play was there all night as was the quick pitch to the weak side...we had already converted two 3rd and longs of these plays,,, with a timeout left and after already going to Chapman on 3 passes I felt we should have ran the ball. Worst case scenario we have a 4th and 5 (very makeable) and use our last timeout. Instead we throw to a receiver who was covered with a safety spying him. That was a mental error by the coaching staff.
This game truly was about who made the fewest mistakes and who made the big plays.... we could verye asily have lost to Russell by 40 points... but I also feel that had we not made mental errors then we could have beaten them by 3 TD's 28-7.

Secondly, now that I have been negative I want to be positive.
This Belfry team made me so porud last night to be at the game. Though I have issues with the way we were initially prepared and though I have issues with the playcalling at the end of the game I must say the coaches made EXCELLENT 2nd half adjustments and had these boys playing on a different level. The boys showed true heart as most teams would have gotten drilled being down by 20 at the half on the road to Russell, instead this young team came out and throroughly dominated the Devils.
Matt Maynard, what more can i say, the kid gave his heart again. The play he made on the QB was unbelievable, he had less than 10 yards rushing in the first half and finished with 89...and had it not been for three runs where maynard got tackled for huge losses trying to make a big play out of nothing he would ahve ran for over 100 again.
Dustin May,,, he was a man tonight. The kid will be a superstar next year on both sides of the ball mark my words..
Speaking of next year... the dynasty will continue..this is just a pause as I feel we will roll to the 2A title next year with so muc talent and experience returning...and with such as trong sophomore and freshman class 2007 could be state title #4.

This game was one by the better team on the field tonight, plain and simple. My hats off to coach McGlone and his team, they had an excellent gameplan and had thier team FIRED UP to say the least. Thier intensity was unreal in the first half and thier playcalling had the Pirates so confused it looked like there was only one team on the field the entire first half. With that said, I am extremely proud of the way Belfry played the second half, you showed your heart and you can never be ashamed of that, you were put in a situation that you were definitely not accustomed to (being down three td's) and you never gave up, hold your heads high men, you made your fans proud by your performance tonight.
All I will say about the 3rd and 8 play is this, yes i would have probably ran the ball, but Maynard had fumbled at least twice already that half, so I can understand the playcall. Not saying it was the right one, but I can understand why it was called.
To all the seniors, thanks for proving everyone wrong this year. You have accomplished more during your careers than anyone could have ever imagined, and we as fans have alot to be proud of thanks to you guys. Good luck with everything you set out to accomplish in your lives and thanks again for leaving it all on the field.

Good luck in Louisville Russell, make us proud and bring home the title.

Congratulations to the Russell Red Devils, I'm sure the coachs, players and fans showed great sportsmanship after the game. I'm sure the Belfry fans and coaches did the same. It was a great year for the Pirates, very over achieving from the expectations. Russell has fought hard all year, beat some good teams along the way. I'm for one lucky to have seen both teams play and that I'm looking forward to the Lawrence vs. Belfry game again next year. I'm also looking for another show down in the semis between these 2 great schools. The 2 classiest programs in Eastern Ky, with one going on to state.. Hats off and Goodluck
11-26-2005, 09:08 PM
Congrats to Russell and to the Pirates on a great year!

I said at the beginning of the season that belfry would make it to the game before state and lose to Russell...ande I was right..and it sucks so bad. I think Russell was probably the more talented team..but Belfry should've won. Belfry's defense shut Russell down the whole second half. And Belfry had the go ahead touchdown and got a penalty...this was followed by 2 or 3 more penalties until it was eventually 3rd and goal from like the 43..thats a killer. I don't agree passing on 3rd down at the end. But I'm not the coach. I'm my opinion you have 2 plays to get 8 yards and we still had a timeout left. Somebody earlier said that we had fumbled numerous times in that game to that point was absolutely right...but in the first championship game in 03 we fumbled 6 times or something like that and still didn't pass once. In about every Belfry game I've seen..when we pass in a very preassure filled situation..90% of the time it's an interception. But thats the way things go. Belfry should've won the way things were..but at the same time Russell probably should've been up 35-0 at halftime. But all in the same...congradulations to Russell. Everybody in Eastern Kentucky should root for Russel to beat the Aces and keep the championship over on this side of the state...if for no other reasons Belfry fans should root for the Red Devils because that way we can say we got beat by the best team in the state.
11-26-2005, 10:10 PM
Congrats to Russell  . And to the Belfry Pirates all I can say is WOW what a season this has been. I have enjoyed watching the progress these young men have made all season long. I am truly proud to be a PIRATE..irateSho
11-26-2005, 10:16 PM
Well Russell's defence was hitting and pounding on Belfry pretty good, but belfry recovered and went right back at them of what i saw on t.v. But when the QB throws a Interseption at the last 47 sec.'s on the clock, but we can't blame him for the loss! It was the coach's ruleing to pass the ball! But Good luck to the Pirates next year! alute:

I wonder what red devillette thought about the game....our only true Russell fan and she doesnt have an opinion? Come on RD lay it on us, were big boys we can take it.
11-27-2005, 03:22 AM
Hey can I type it for her lol She kinda got her opinion through me in the other thread. Was a hell of a game. Just when you thought Russell was gonna run away Belfry come clawing back and made it real interesting. Dont think there was any loser in this game. I really didnt think Matt played very well at all and he got frustrated really bad. I think that lost a lot being he is the team leader. Was a geat game though. One of the best I have seen in a while.
11-27-2005, 03:23 AM
I have an opinion, but noone here would wanna hear it lol..
I was there, with the other people freezing my feet off lol, and I havent been to a game since like 91/92 , and I enjoyed it greatly!
I think the devils played their hearts out ..
Both teams showed a lot of talent and to be quite honest, I thought we had blown it lol.. I figured that 1 point difference from last week would come back to bite us in the rear with the 2 point conversion they missed..
I also am very proud to be a Devil and will be pulled them to win this thing next weekend, after 27 years, its about time we got back there again.. Just hope they keep their heads in the game and not let the thoughts of them being there get to them .
