2011-2014 Classification Ranking

I'm told that Boyle Co., Cooper, Harrison Co. and Johnson Central have all requested to move from 4A to 5A.

According to Mike Fields of the herald-leader LexCath has requested a move as well

What reason would Boyle give for moving up? They have several 4A teams within an hour or so.

Same for Johnson Central they have Ashland, Boyd and Greenup at least.

In this case it looks like Highlands is the cat and the other potential 4a teams are the birds since they are trying to scatter out of 4a as fast as possiible before they get eaten.

The Highlands team is very good I understand. But they are full of kids just like the any other team. I would expect the teams in 4A to prepare and work hard just as they have and not make excuses. Kids are kids, only difference is preparation and work ethic. And that comes mainly with good coaching, but the kids must want to do the hard work needed to compete on an upper level.

Crud. The article says LexCath is also wanting to move up to 5A. If all those requests are approved, 4A will have gone from one of the toughest classes to something much less than that.

Yup. What happened to the talk about no one being allowed to play up? Looked to me like a lot of these teams had pretty decent districts just based on the way things fell out naturally.
If these teams are allowed to move up, and HHS is put down in 4A, this would be a big step backwards for HHS. I'm sure the folks in Ft. Thomas don't like the idea. Most 4A programs will be at a huge disadvantage. I hope it doesn't happen. Go Birds! 20 in 10!
No need to panic. Lexington Catholic might find their way into 5A, but all the rest of those schools are staying put. Johnson Central's request is completely pathetic. Boyle County's is better, but not good enough.

If those teams were allowed to move up, I think you'd see tougher out of district opponents on Highlands schedule in the future. Not every OOD opponent would be a Colerain, X or T type team, but I'd guess you see more and see them more often to beef up Highlands schedule. Who knows, maybe that's a possible silver lining. If the road to the state championship is going to be made much easier, maybe Dale compensates for that with a tougher, more challenging regular season schedule. Hey I'm not in the Optimists, but I'm an optimist.

requesting is one thing, being approved is completely different. i doubt they let many move up.

I don't see anywhere for Lex Cath to go in 5A, other than the Jessamnine schools there isn't anywhere and that is just 2 teams.

4A they could have Harrison, Boyle, Mercer, to name a few.
does highlands dropping to 4A pose the same problem as they had last time when they moved up? or are other NKY teams in 4A now.

HHS is not going anywhere, they are 4A to stay, they have a full NKY district in 4A, unlike 4 years ago in 3A.
didnt know if they had enough in NKY for a 4A district. i saw where cov cath was there didnt know the other 2 though.

At the risk of offending, that was un-informed talk. The KHSAA never formally discussed the idea of not allowing any one to play up. Some folks wanted the KHSAA to adopt such a hard and fast rule and were pushing for it, but the KHSAA never indicated it was heading in that direction. The KHSAA's position was when they previously re-aligned and remains: move up for geographic isolation only.

The Jessamine County schools, Anderson County, Woodford County, and Franklin County are all in 5A, and that's where LexCath would end up if they moved up.

Harrison County is likely to be put in with the NKY schools, which is why they (and Cooper) want out of there.

While Boyle County and Mercer County are a short distance, the rest of their district will likely be Marion County and Taylor County, with a chance of Russell County. If Russell County were in there, LexCath will not be. They fit in there if Russell County is not, but the distance is still further than what they would face in 5A.

I'm not saying LexCath will be able to move, but they do have an argument. The others really don't have a leg to stand on.
Will Letcher Central request to be moved back up to 5A?

And I wonder why they would request a move up to 5A?????
I think we all know why. I think we're playing dodge ball now instead of football.

These are just requests, not a decision by the KHSAA, so nothing is set in stone and they may deny all the requests. The one request I am puzzled about is Boyle County, they have more than enough 4A schools within an hour or just over to compete with in district, so how can they claim "geographic" problems?

I think it's safe to say that most of these teams would stay in 4A if Highlands ended up back in 5A...... The geographic explanation is weak as water.
