Belfry 48 - Pikeville 7

jetpilot Wrote:BTW, congrats to Belfry. Their program is a model for what Pikeville needs to be...again.

I agee, not alot of pond creekers downing their team. Even after the bad decision at the end of the half that cost them the title last year.

jetpilot Wrote:Bull...if Belfry's coaching staff took over at Pikeville it would be night and day IN THE FIRST YEAR. Put Pikeville's coaching staff side by side with any of the good staffs in the mountains and there is no comparison. Pikeville's kids aren't making good coaches look bad...it's the opposite. And anyone who argues that there just aren't enough athletes at Pikeville to have a great football program are making excuses for the adults or just plain foolish...

Yes, yes, and we could all tell how athletic they were against Belfry. I mean with all the great tackling! How has the other sports faired in the last couple of years, besides cheerleading of course?

I don't know about tons, but they do have some football players. Unfortunately, they think their basketball players.

They are .........as a fan of a small school all your athletes are basketball, football etc.

You start making them choose and you get to the point you are at now.

SportsKing Wrote:I guess you would rather Pikeville spread it out on offense and throw it around 35 times a game with all the speedy receivers and athletes they have waiting in line!

Didn't say that but you need to think about different sets maybe a little motion, you can run the ball out shotgun and be effective, remember Barret Rogers, over half of his carries came out of the gun. I'm just saying the belly set is just too predictable, you're either gonna give it to Harmon or throw it to Baker. By the way , what's up with Cleary touching the ball 1 time in the first half, the kid had over 200 yards the week before. We've got other players that can make plays it's up to the coaching staff to get them involved.

Couldn't agree more!!!!

We sure wouldn't be going to Betsy Layne trying to get players and COACHES.

SportsKing Wrote:Pikeville does have hard working and strong kids, but (other than the freshmen class) only have a couple of athletes.

If you only see a COUPLE of athletes "other than the freshmen class" then you know nothing of football. I sincerely hope you are in no way involved with this Pikeville Program.

Great point

SportsKing....You have lost your mind.
SportsKing Wrote:I agree, most of the athletes and football players are in grades 3-6 right now.
Pikeville's little league was neglected for so long, we're seeing the effects now. But, that's all been turned around this year thanks to Copley and his staff.

Copley and staff will be no where close to the Pikeville program when these players are suiting up for the Panthers...

Hard to be upset when you are going to Louisville every year. Let them start losing games by 40 and beating Allen Central by 1 and see how upset they get. And they will come up with something better to fix their program if that ever happens than saying they just don't have any athletes.
The truth of the matter is that hardly any team in 1a, if any, could do much better with our non district schedule than we have at this point. The way Ashland is playing right now I doubt Raceland could beat them again. I still believe we will be a better team come playoff time for this. As far as Copely goes alot people are forgetting that this guy is a first year head coach. Go over and ask Haywood if he did some things in his first year that turned out to be the wrong call I guarantee he'll tell you he made quite a few. Im not making excuses for Copley Im just stating fact. With that said James Cleary needs to be getting more touches even with Harmon in the game. The kid runs hard and plays hard on every snap and our offense is energized with him in the game.
^^^Plenty of 1A schools could at least be competitive with the teams Pikeville has lost by 40 to.

I agree with you. I think they should play as many sports as they can. At a small school you need your best athletes playing all three sports if possible. I wasn't trying to pit one sport against the other. All the coaches should encourage kids to play each sport.

I agree about showing some different sets. I also agree that Pikeville needs to get some other running backs in the mix. It seems like Harmon has been hurt quite a bit this year.

I'm just saying that there are some kids only playing basketball and I think some of them could contribute on the football field as well. Would you disagree?

I'd say your more right than you know.

A twenty-five year Pikeville Football fan and we all should be involved with the program in some way or another.

Who are they? Wes Rowe..probably? Matt Clevenger..never even considered it?

I just don't see a whole lot of basketball players that could help the football program, they are all quite small. In turn I don't see many football players that could help the basketball team besides Harmon.
Ouch. Sounds like Pikeville was beat before they stepped on their own field! For some of Coach Jackson's faults, he SEEMED (to me at least) to be an INTENSE GUY and seemed to genuinely want to beat Belfry.

He quirky offense is probably not missed, but his intensity?
the little league program was fine before the last coach came and wanted to control it. they didn't want the old timers there with some creative play. they wanted to run the 4 horseman- knute rockne offense. it's really worked out for the program.

I could only think of one and even they wouldnt beat Belfry or Ashland at this point. IMO they wont beat P-burg this weekend.
actually, didnt 2 of pikevilles basketball players quit for fotball?
most of the players on the basketball team have never played football and if they have then they are already playing football

Lets stay on topic.
I hate this for Pikeville because they've worked so hard in the off season for a good season. Especially the seniors, and half are hardly getting to play because of injuries!

Unlike Belfry, Pikeville doesnt take alot of fans anymore like in the past. They might get a good crowd to go up Pike Central or Betsy Layne but thats half a gallon of gas to get there. No matter where you are, You'll see red on over half of the stands and couldn't talk when Belfry gets even the littlest yard. Thats one thing that gets the players fired up and playing good, a big loud school colored crowd! Hardly 1/4 of the students in PHS attend football games and that sickens me cause we all know that Copley and his staff could make a great program again

Wes Rowe, Clark Keene, Dustin Boyd, Stephen Layne, Gatlin Clark all played middle school football. I think all the kids should stick together and play every sport they can, all the programs would benefit.

Are you being serious or are you joking around? You don't even realize it, but you stated one of the main problems with Little League programs. In my opinion, Little League needs to be running the same basic plays on offense and defense as their High School program. The creative plays does kids no good if they are never going to run them after Little League. An occasional reverse is always welcome.
Belfry played awesome in that game congrats to them!!
