Pikeville vs. Belfry 9/18

AtlPirateFan Wrote:If you at all mistook my post as overlooking Pikeville you need to reevaluate your reading comprehension, because I for one would never overlook Pikeville. My statement was that the kids did last year because they had no reference to Pikeville being good enough to beat them. I thoroughly remember 98, 99 and 2000 vividly. It sucked loosing to Pikeville when I was a student and I remember all the hype going into those games. We knew Pikeville was a big game. The kids on Belfrys last few teams did not have that reference to know that Pikeville was dangerous.

Nice try but that wasn't overlooking at all. I am pretty sure the statement "if the Panthers rely on Pugh alone then it's going to be a long, long night in Pikeville. " was pretty accurate. Pugh did not do it alone last year.

Nice try but this was your prediction and it was pretty inaccurate:

Belfry - 42
Pikeville - 20 ( with a TD coming in garbage time)

^^^That's what happens over 13 years.

AtlPirateFan Wrote:I said it last year. The Pirates sleep walked in Hillard Howard thinking Pikeville didn't matter. The kids on that team looked at Pikeville like they looked at Pike Central, we the older generation might know and understand the rivalry between Pikeville and Belfry. We might know that Pikeville can be a force to reckon with at times but those kids had seen scores like these in their past

2014 29-20 Pikeville
2013 56 - 20 Belfry

I would warn not to fall into the trap of looking beyond the short term.

These are the only two games that give a clue because they are the only two games that involved players on these teams who contributed to the outcome.

Obviously we know what happened last year, but that 2013 score was a bit misleading as well. Belfry wound up cruising on the scoreboard but if I recall Pikeville had success moving the ball and had a couple cataclysmic failures that helped doom them.

The Panthers gained around 270 yards that game.. granted some came against reserves...but they did move the ball against the Belfry 1's and Chase Hall gained over 100 yards.

I also believe Belfry was a bit flat footed and the early fumble return for a score didn't help matters any. Once the Panthers got into a groove it was too late.

My main point was that going into last year the kids on the team did not have a solid reference as to who Pikeville was. They had fallen on hard times yes Jetpilot I will give you the win on this one, I too expected Belfry to dominate Pikeville for a few more seasons before Pikevilles win drought was over. I still believe the Pirates were asleep at the wheel last year. I also stand by last years statement that one player will not win the game on his own. Pugh is good we all know that but if he doesn't have help Friday night Pikeville will be in for a long night.

Even if he does have help it could be a long night. Two different teams, different venue, different mindset, etc...Pikeville must play mistake-free football and mix the run and pass successfully to stay in the game.

Here's what it comes down to for me:
-Belfry averages about a 50 pound per man advantage, and about 3 or 4 inches in height in the matchup of Oline vs. Pikeville D-LIne
- Horton and Bentley have a huge size advantage in the matchup of Belfry DL vs. Pikeville OL
- Pikeville has 5 guys playing both ways full time. That is really good for a 1A team... but Belfry will only ask 3 of their guys to go 4 Quarters both ways. Even more important Bentley is the only player in Belfry's Front 7 going both ways..whereas Pikeville has 4 guys doing so.
- I like the Dials kid a lot but I don't see the same pinpoint accuracy that they got out of Austin Charles. We can talk about Pugh all we want, but the game hinged on Charles' performance to keep the sticks moving and maintain balance. He pin pointed the short passes for 5 yard gains all night and softened the box. Charles did a great job of putting the pass in stride so Estep and Vanderbeck could get up field for positive yards.
- The value of what Estep did on Defense is lost. He saved no less than three TD's with his open field pursuit and tackling. Also gone is Caleb Skeens who played a whale of game making one on one tackles on the edge.

Ultimately how Belfry responds to having their legs cut out is critical. I thought it was genius and executed perfectly last year. In fact the entire gameplan was brilliant. Pikeville knows the recipe to beat Belfry... clutter the LOS, get off blocks and shut down the outside, win Special Teams, and maintain balance and the short passing game.

Daric Pugh was the ONLY HB to run for over 100 yards on Belfry last year and through 3 games this year. Pikeville will be very content taking 3.5 yards at a time and letting the clock run and hoping for that chance to pop a big one.

I think if both teams play flawless Belfry wins by 21-24 points.... with Corbett and Willis back and having to find their timing again I don't think flawless is possible for Belfry though. I actually think this game ends up resembling last week a lot. Super tight for a Half...and a couple key stops in the 2nd Half and the weight of Belfry's line eventually opens it up late

Belfry 27
Pikeville 13
Belfry will have no excuses if they get beat this year. Yes, we didn't come in with the mindset we needed last year. It won't happen again. My boys fight all the time about one winning a couple of championship and the other not. But my oldest puts his younger brother in his place by this statement. "At least we didn't lose to Pikeville". Younger brother realizes the importance of the game now. IT WONT HAPPEN AGAIN.
Belfry 35 Pikeville 14
Game will be interesting. Last year....IMO Belfry came in flat-footed and bored and played poorly. I thought Pikeville exposed some weaknesses that the staff addressed and fixed throughout the season. I guess the question is this......Does Pikeville have Belfry's attention? If they don't after last season's debacle....then Pikeville will have an excellent chance of making it two in a row. My gut tells me the Belfry Kids have circled this game on the schedule......and they'll be dialed in and ready to play. If that's the case......this game will be back and forth for a little while....but the Pirates will have too much depth.

Belfry 44
Pikeville 20
Belfry 42 to 21
Belfry-35
Pikeville-14
I love this Pikeville team, but they don't win two years in a row. They especially don't do it at CAM.
Pirates by (2) TD's.

I was taught the way to defend the taking out of the knees of our offensive lineman in my living room!!!! It's gonna be a way different game this time. And some really sore DL for pikeville. Lol
So if Belfry beats you it's because you are at CAM, you are just 1A, or Pikeville just got beat. If Pikeville wins it's because their under estimated. Well I guess Pikeville has more going for it if they lose. That sounds good to me!
I agree with 1991#8. I like a good clean, rough, solid game. To cut the legs is cheap IMO. What does it show? Weakness! That means that team can not play with you. Just MO.
That was the saddest game I've ever seen. I really don't know what happened. Yes, I do think we went in over confident, but it was more than that. I felt like Belfry was moving in slow motion. It truly was the worse game I've ever witnessed. Praying for a better out come this year at CAM!!!
It sounds like someone who has some insight in the future of HS football. I'd love to know how their season will end up and if the technology helped them. Keep us informed!
I would love to see a running clock by the end of 3rd. quarter. But I guess you could say "oh ye of little faith," to this Belfry fan. I sure hope you are right though!!!
I have to disagree with the concept of Belfry having "me" players. These juniors on Belfry's team all came up together. They were the first group that won the 8th. grade state championship that continued from then til now. They did that by playing together. This group of guys are outstanding. Just sayin',
Hoped to exchange barbs with the Belfry faithful all week, but the rivalry is too intense for both sides to make it fun....so I'm going to make my prediction and bow out....good luck to both sides and proud to be involved in this rivalry for 30 years now...great people on both sides....

Notice he doesn't leave who the winner is gonna be lol. He'll be back
Posts are getting silly, it should all be in fun about a rivalry. That said I'm picking Belfry by 10 in a great game.
On took till Monday for Pikeville to drop some solid racism. Good work Panthers.😳

A very young kid made a bad joke. I can assure you there is no racism involved. If you insist on getting offended go ahead. But there was no harm meant or bad feelings. People of color going to school at Pikeville and playing sports and being loved for it 50 years before Belfry...
Belfry gets the Win.

But as Lee Corso would say.... "Closer than the experts think."

Saying Pikeville people are racist...really.? One person says something and it doesn't represent Pikeville and everyone should know that! Now on to the rivalry fun...
