When does the deal run out with WKU. I would like to MSU get one.
WKU- Sweet 16 girls, football
EKU- All A
UK- Sweet 16 Boys
UofL- Swimming and driving
Like it is right now WKU got two championship. MSU- don't got nothing. There is more sports then these 4.

MSU (either Morehead or Murray) is too far from the middle of the state. Murray, in the Jackson Purchase, to too far west and Morehead, is too far to the northeast.

People complain about WKU, but I think it has been great for football.

Other then the fact that the kids got to play at Louisville's stadium, WKU is a much better venue for the state championship games.

murray state is too far from an interstate and morehead's stadium isnt big enough for a state championship game. i think the khsaa looks for a stadium that holds atleast 15000

1A, 2A, and 3A Don't really bring that many fans out. If they have 1A to 3A and one and 4A to 6A at the other one.
#71
Anyone know the final attendance for the 3A game?

There is a horrible crowd right now for the 6A game.

what about 5A?
#73
Don't know the numbers, but Christian County had a very nice crowd and Highlands was down some presumably because of the snow.
#74
i heard that ACS pre sold 12,000 tix. any truth to this?
#75
Sounds like the fans who only have to travel the interstates to get to Bowling Green seem to be the wimpiest.

Yeah, other than the fact that the media hates it (no heat in press box and no windows as it is open air ... plus no elevator) and parking stinks. Plus, it was actually LONGER for teams to drive to BG than it would have been had the finals been at U of L, UK, EKU or somewhere in NKU (if NKU ever gets football).

WKU lucked out with AC-S getting to the final because it skewed attendance. If the finals were in Louisville this year, Central, Male and Trinity all have far more fans show up than what they brought 200-plus miles roundtrip to BG.
#77
As far as the 5A game goes, I kinda think the snow between Fort Thomas and Louisville may have had something to do with it. Driving home was no picnic. Black ice is not fun.

Bowling Green: Basketball (Girls), Football, Golf
Frankfort: Wrestling
Georgetown: Soccer
Lexington: Baseball, Basketball (Boys), Cross Country, Tennis
Louisville: Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Swimming-Diving, Track, Volleyball

Softball rotates. In the past 10 years, has been held in Owensboro, Louisville, Hopkinsville and maybe even Frankfort.

KHSAA will have a bowling state tournament this year too, most likely in Louisville or Lexington.

And with where Murray and Morehead are located, I don't see them getting ANY championship any time soon. Plus, you better have a big local booster lined up (like BG has in Houchens and Leachman) or Lexington with Forcht Bank for baseball.

What do you mean NO WINDOWS? They are big windows that roll down when it is cold. Just pull them down. You guys can't figure that one out?

tradition Wrote:What do you mean NO WINDOWS? They are big windows that roll down when it is cold. Just pull them down. You guys can't figure that one out?

Many high schools have better press boxes than WKU.

The windows are like roll-up garage doors. It's either:
1) Watch game in open air (and a breeze will send your papers/notes flying)
2) Shut the garage door (which means you can't see)

It's not like many high school press boxes, where you can just shift the window open or close it and still see thru it. That's NOT an option at WKU.

You shouldn't have to wear gloves in any decent "big time" college press box to write notes/type your story.

Talk to any media member who has covered a football game at WKU (basketball is a different story because Diddle's set up is nice) ... for a D-I school, it's a joke. And for them to go through all the remodel at Houchens/Smith, the press box is laughable.

I know fans don't care about the press and think they're biased -- FWIW, it didn't matter to me who won titles this weekend at all. Highlands could roll or get upset by Christian and I'd sleep the same either way -- but it you want to have positive ink and get good pub once in a while, you might want to make it a wee bit easier for them to WANT to cover a game there.

Even the courier-journal guys, Mike Fields of the Lexington Herald-Leader and Ryan Ernst of the Cincinnati paper were all saying the same thing ... WKU's press box is awful to work in in December.

I'd rather be at U of L, Commonwealth, Old Cardinal Stadium (parking was better, heated press box), Georgetown College's Rawlings Stadium, EKU, Kentucky Wesleyan, Campbellsville University, Lindsey Wilson, Union, etc.
#81
Who cares about the comfort of the media? The finals are about the players and the teams in the finals and WKU is better all the way around for them.
#82
I enjoyed working in the press box during the Belfry game. Saw everything. Didn't need binoculars. Only thing you gotta do is dress warm.

To revisit an earlier thought - I think it would be an excellent idea to hold some of the outstate regional and semi-final games at the regional universities - Murray, Morehead, Eastern, Western, etc. It is an idea worth considering if everyone can agree on the gates and travel is not too cumbersome.

If this happens the KHSAA will take over the state semi's, pay a few expenses of the teams like they do for the finals, and they will keep any profits.

People from Louisville and Northern Kentucky wonder why people in Eastern Kentucky and other parts of the state dislike them and think they are whiny snobs. They want you to feel like they are making the biggest sacrifices because they have to travel over 200 miles roundtrip. For many teams it is over 200 miles one way to Bowling Green, Louisville, and Northern Kentucky and you never hear their fans complain. Many of these teams are so spoiled that they think if they drive over an hour to a game, they are being mistreated. When you make it to the state tournament, you should just be happy to be there no matter the location. If you are going to move state tournament sports events to a location that is more convenient to majority of the population of the state, you would have everything in Lexington. Here is a tip for the media in Bowling Green.

1. If it is cold - wear multiple layers of clothes and a heavy winter coat.

2. No elevator - lose some weight. I do sympathize with a media person that
may be handicapped but most complain because they are fat and out of
shape.

3. If you do not like the drive, stay at the d&*n house and listen to it on the
radio.

Look at the 12 finalists. Can you honestly tell me it was better to have it in BG compared to Louisville when you had three LOU teams (Central, Male, Trinity), two NKY teams (FTH, NCC).

I'm NOT from Louisville or NKY. I can be in BG in a little over an hour and I love watching the Hot Rods play at home. Been to several games at Diddle and had enjoyable experiences (better than Rupp for watching a game, IMO).

I can show you the average miles per team (and fans) and in most years, the football finals would be way better off in Louisville and Lexington (won't get moved to Commonwealth unless turf is added) than WKU. Outside of OCath, AC-S and Christian, being at WKU was NOT that advantageous. And in some cases, going to WKU was a LONGER drive for folks from EKY.

Plus, there's this: While WKU has grown in leaps and bounds, it's still not seen as "big time" like Rupp, Freedom Hall, Papa John's, Commonwealth, Yum!, etc.

While I think Diddle has been GREAT for the girls' hoops, there are still complaints the girls should pull a Title IX and play in Rupp as well (although they'd never fill Rupp). Football teams would never fill Papa John's/Commonwealth either, but for the most important game, you want to play in the best venue.

I'm not sure WKU is it.

If they did, about 6,500 didn't show up.

The crowd of 7,964 was the second biggest crowd to ever attend a Class 2A state playoff game
#89
In my opinion WKU is just as good as Louisville. That's just my opinion.

Recap:

A 5761
AA 7918
AAA 5792
AAAA 13167
AAAAA 5959
AAAAAA 9116

Grand Total: 47,713

Great weekend for crowds. Too bad the games did not live up to the expectations for 5 of the teams.

BTW Ohio had a total for their 6 of 35,586 but they had live TV in parts of the state.
