1987 Pikeville Panthers vs. 2009 Fort Thomas Highlands
#61
If the 1987 Pikeville team was that great they probably should have won more than a district championship in 1986.

So your logic is they should have won more than three straight state championships. Good one.

Who was the QB who beat Pikeville in a close game in 1986 in the playoffs?
Hint...D-1.

I watched the '87 team play and even 4a state semi finalist Henry Clay couldnt do anything with them. I dont know what they could do against this years Highlands team but I know one thing....I wouldnt bet against the 1987 Pikeville Panthers.

qryche11 Wrote:Highlands hands down. That was a great Pikeville team but they were a great Class A team and we are talking about a 3A team in Highlands who plays a 5A/6A schedule.

Taking nothing away from that team because they had a very good recieving corps. I forgot their names Mcnamee maybe and Honaker. I just remember they had some shootouts with Beechwood.

Highlands is 5A

Pikeville is 1A

My logic is if the 1987 team was the best of the three (which should mean that was the best group of seniors) then they would have been better as juniors.

Highlands is 5A only because they asked to play up. They were not classified as 5A, instead they were a high 3A or low 4A but if I recall it was 3A.

I think he meant super bowl appearance.

Guys this is a WASTED argument....We will never know regardless...And like mentioned, just a totally different game back then. High school kids then were MEN...Like they could all pass to be a 30-35 year old today. I don't know what it is, but if you look at any program from the 70's/80's you will see what I am talking about. My brother's winless team from 1987 would win the district that Pikeville, Paintsville and others are in today.

I agree this is a totally useless argument. Hasbeens talk about this kind of stuff all the time (by the way I played college football so I am one of the worst kinds of hasbeens) I prefer to try to live in the now. :HitWall:

Today's game is much different then it was in 87. The off and in season programs and methods a very different. The use of computers and the way film is used today. The techniques taught and the ability to gain and share information. The size and speed of the HS players is different. The schemes have changed. The game is different and in some cases the rules are even different.

Pikeville would win. To big, to physical, to fast for Highlands. Those guys at Pikeville back then were MEN! 400 pound bench presses, jacked up to the gills. They were one SPECIAL team. Very SPECIAL.

Class size didn't matter when the 87 panther team played, they beat whoever they played, but that was 20 years ago, athletes are bigger, stronger and faster now so to compare a great team 20 years ago to a great team now is kind of illogical, but now if you were to compare the 87 highlands team to the 87 panther team the maroon and white would win, IMO

The bolded part is so very true. Football players today are head and shoulders better than football players were 20 years ago. I was a first team, all classes, all state player by both the sports writers and the coaches back in the 70's. I couldn't make the first team, all N. Ky team this year and that's a simple truth (as painful as it may be for me to admit at times :biggrinSmile.

No problem many don't realize that they wanted to play up in class.

No brainer. Highlands.

Tell you the truth it wouldn't suprise me if the 80's team won.

Highlands would be able to put up to many points for pikeville to deal with.

Hahahaha, I'm sorry that just struck me as funny because they have been bottom dewlers so long nobody can remember them winning anything! I on the other hand remember it well, it was 1988. Hey on the flipside looks like they might be turning it around? Well... It is early in the season alot can happen! :flush:

Btw Highlands, Ive seen them both during that time period a couple times. Pikeville was amazing, but once again highlands was.... Well, HIGHLANDS! IMO

I know that Highlands is considered as having one of, if not the most, elite programs in the state of Kentucky......and Ive seen plenty of Highlands games through the years, some really recent. But I also watched that '87 Pikeville team dismantle every team they played. I know its a different era and players are bigger, stronger and faster blah blah blah but Ive not seen a team in any class since that years Pikeville team that I would consider anymore talented. 1. Size...yep they were huge 2. Strong.....you would have to see them in person, film doesnt do them credit 3. Speed.........Well you had better watch their speed early in games because they usually ran everyteam off the field before halftime. Comparing teams from years apart is a task that none of us can predict on a consistent basis but to say that any team from any year would destroy the '87 Panthers is utter nonsense. I know some on here can say theyve seen them on tape but you just wouldnt understand how good that team was unless you got to watch them upclose. FWIW, this is coming from a non Pikeville supporter so I would consider myself very unbiased when it comes to this discussion.

Most of them were juniors in '87 - and sophomores in '86...
Good call on Maggard.

The '88 team was just as good if not better IMO.

The difference is that today's kids are bigger, stronger, and faster. They are also much more wimpier. Kids have to take two or three days off from practice due to an ingrown toenail or a sniffle as kids 20, 30, and 40 years ago would play with broken bones.
